sometimes i think my ideas about rohan and fame are unrealistic because he's a manga artist. but then i remember manga artists having a public image is indeed a thing that happens sometimes (araki-san himself is an example).

plus what happened with eve in the tskr "hot summer martha" chapter, and how unphased rohan seems in part 4 when he thinks his address was leaked.

this kind of thing has actually been happening in fandoms and to artists and actors for ages; it's sadly not new -- people thinking they know a person because of their art, and exhausting that to every extreme.

with rohan, when i write fanfic or whatever, i focus heavily on the artist's struggle in terms of a jodorowsky-esque agony (if you've seen "the holy mountain," specifically that part with all the jesus sculptures) of one's art being perceived as anything other than how it was intended.

and as an artist with feelings and with an inner world just like any human has, you are also vulnerable to being cheapened, parasocialized, misinterpreted as someone you are not, to the degree that that misinterpretation does indeed exist. people play with a copy of you, almost like a puppet, yet you still bear the abuse -- it's a puppet you're trapped inside of.

so i learned that the sleep phases that death 13 traps kakyoin in are less like nightmares and more like night terrors, which is an even more insidious vulnerability.

people can be woken up from nightmares relatively easily. night terrors happen during deep, non-REM sleep, with episodes of partial arousal/awakeness -- you're in a non-responsive sleep state but with pockets of partially waking up and screaming, thrashing, and having instinctive responses to what you're seeing in the night terror -- which is a big reason why they appear so scary to anyone witnessing them. even when shaking the person, it's very hard to wake them up.

with nightmares, there's a much higher chance of us remembering them after we wake up. night terrors, not so much. you might remember what you saw or heard within the dream, but are a lot less likely to remember screaming, calling for help, thrashing, etc.

death 13 doesn't just trap kakyoin in a dream, he imprisons him in a near-coma.

just rewatched "perfect blue" and realized in making my own version of doppio's story that i accidentally made it into something almost identical to that lmfao whoooops

jotaro and rohan dynamic:

rohan starts out being extremely annoying because of the massive crush he has on jotaro upon first meeting him (pure lust though and not romantic whatsoever). jotaro keeps reminding him that he's married, loves his wife, and they aren't looking for anything open. but jotaro also doesn't have the energy to be very mean to him about it. (he also wouldn't be comfortable with an age gap like that, because at that point, he sees 20-year-olds as pretty much being teenagers lol -- he starts calling rohan a "zygote")

then rohan starts seeing tonio romantically and doesn't care about jotaro that way anymore. and since jotaro has been part of the queer community for almost a decade more than rohan, he feels like more of a mentor, and they start doing shit together like drinking way too many mimosas and passing out at the bus stop at 2pm.

the two also start noticing an unspoken mutual sadness. they have things in common that they don't talk about, causing them to sometimes catch each other's eye and share a look that they don't have a name for. like when you know you share some flavor of a traumatic experience with an acquaintance, but neither of you feels right bringing it up -- a weird intimacy that exists only in silence.

at some point i'm gonna talk about the use of generative ai in the soundtrack for some of the rohan live action (and the musician justifying it) and i'm gonna be soooo mean

albeit i'm not old enough to fully understand the eras this music came from and just how powerful metal music and the rock of those eras was for kids with homophobic and ultra religious parents, but it's definitely fascinating to see jjba getting more young queer people into the same 70s-90s bands that made queer people come to life at the time

i can't help but ponder the emotional consequences of heaven's door. if rohan is so quick to read people with it, without a lot of provocation (and because of his insatiable curiosity), he undoubtedly has read some horrific things about people. whether it's awful things they've been through or horrible things they've done to others. (i mean. recall that repulsive shit he read from hazamada and how he just about recoiled upon reading it).

that aspect alone of heaven's door would explain enough why he doesn't trust anyone or get close to people. it's so beyond just being aware that a lot of people do atrocious things; it's seeing those actions through their pov and knowing exactly what internal thoughts and feelings they have about those actions -- their apathy, their sadism.

rohan has stared right into the eyes of the evil that people have within them.
