nathan shrugged a bit. he had been living very differently than cloud had over the last few years, so their experiences had shaped them differently. “i think, actually, for me it was coming back home that really cemented the idea in my head that i was good the way things are,” he said. “for now,” he added with a smile. he agreed with that. he’d had plenty of people he hadn’t talked to for years and when they met again, they were still friends. he’d also had friendships that died over space and time. “exactly! if we can still be friends after half a decade of barely seeing each other, you can find someone to love you when you leave,” he winked.

“it’s sound so desperate when you say it like that. finding someone to love me.” cloud wrinkled her nose in distaste though she knew that was exactly what she was doing. her last relationship had been awful and short and she wanted to find something real. she wanted to actually be in love. “you know, i feel bad about not coming home so much. i really did miss you and everyone else in town. i’m glad you were here when i got back because this place is only as good as the people in it, really. next time i’m on tour i’ll have to fly you out to one of the locations so you can see the show and the sights.”

“that’s true, you do look unfortunately young. doesn’t sound bad at all you should be proud that you’re googleable. look at you; you got me making up adjectives for you and we just met. i am nowhere near as cool as a singer. i almost don’t want to say since it’s so minuscule compared to yours.”

“you’re quite the charmer, did you know that? c’mon, tell me! it’s fun and all but it has it’s downside and trust me, i don’t think less of anyone based on their profession.”

‘ because — ’ he paused, looking the girl up and down. ‘ you look a lot like my big sister. and she always brought guys with haircuts like that back. ’

“that’s...” she trailed off, taken aback and searching for the right word as his eyes took in her appearance, “disturbing. i’d wager a guess you and your sister are older than me, though.” cloud glanced down at her phone, whatever interest she had in the guy on the screen fading with the telling of the anecdote. “do you always offer up childhood trauma so willingly?”

“i probably could have gotten away with a lot more shit than i actually tried to get away with,” he said with a laugh. he had always been a bit of a jokester, but he’d never really tried to get into trouble. he nodded a bit. everything she was saying made sense. “i’ve already done the relationship thing, more than once, and i just don’t really want to go there right now. i’m only twenty-three, you know. i still have a lot i want to do for myself, so i just don’t think it’s necessary to get too wrapped up with the whole relationship thing,” he shrugged. nathan loved being in relationships. he just wasn’t sure he was ready yet. “i’m sure you can find someone. you’re a lovely person. and being away from people isn’t the worst thing if the relationship is solid, friends or otherwise.”

“yeah, i used to feel the same way so i understand. i guess being home just changed my mind a little.” she had enjoyed partying and leading a single, carefree life while she was on tour and while she didn’t date, there were a few flings here and there that she’d wished could turn into more but a new day meant a new country and she was too busy to give her all. “i agree, plus space can be healthy and testament to how genuine a relationship is. take us for example. we’re still friends even though i was gone for so long and i think that says a lot about us as people.”

“it’s the dimples and green eyes. you should always trust my judgment,” he teased, smiling at her. nathan thought that made sense, but he wouldn’t really know. he’d spent all but two years of his entire life here. “sure. with all your money, you could just settle down now,” he teased. “not so much. not that i’m really looking for someone to steal my heart, though,” he said honestly.

“in high school, it meant the entire staff loved you and never gave you a hard time, at least from my point of view.” she laughed remembering when they were younger and nathan was even more adorable with curly hair and sparkling eyes giving him natural charm. cloud, on the other hand, had been reserved and a little awkward, a far cry from her professional and personal image now. “and you’re right not to be looking. i know our twenties are supposed to be a time for new and plentiful experiences but i’ve lived a lot already. i’m never going to stop making music and touring, i love it too much, but this year off will be good for me. being settled in my love life just means i have to find someone who’s okay if i’m not necessarily physically settled in one place.” she was rambling a little and she knew it, punctuating her tangent with a shrug and leaning back in her seat. she was making up for lost time, she supposed because missing her friends while traveling had been hard for her at such a young age.

“i feel like dating is super overrated, but like i said, i haven’t gone on a date in a long time. do regular dates always end with the expectation of sex? i don’t know. i don’t see the point in having sex with a stranger you meet online.” a stranger you meet in person was different somehow.

“based on what i’ve seen on the app, lots of people are expecting sex. i don’t see the point in having sex with a stranger, period, but of course, that’s just me. it’d be so much easier if i could take the guesswork and courtship stuff out of it and just be in a serious relationship straight away but life doesn’t work like that.”

“to be fair, few people are as cute as me. i would swipe left, too. i tried a dating app in high school for a while, but i find that relationships are a lot more fun if they’re authentic.”

“it’s true, you were blessed! i trust your judgment so left it is.” cloud shrugged, swiping left on the app and closing it out. she had much more interest in talking to nathan than looking at guys on a screen. “i think that too but you know it was hard to make real connections when i was on the road. now that i’m back, i figure it’s time to look for something a little more serious. what about you? did anyone steal your heart while i was away?”

“Alright there, Pillow Princess,” she quipped, definitely meaning no harm with that statement. Because why could she? It was just a joke, right? “Are dicks ANYONE’S strong suit, though? Is that even possible? Have you SEEN them?” Not the best topic to have so many questions for, but at this point, Ashe was used to talking about anything and anyone, really. “— you should get a HER app, I’ve heard it’s pretty good.”

“Yes, I’ve seen them and I’ve concluded that they’re meant to feel good, not look good. They’re alien appendages, honestly.” Cloud thought back to the handful of times she’d seen one in person and shuddered at how those incidents had ended. Usually, with some very annoyed guy yelling at her or calling her a tease. “HER?” Cloud cocked her head in questioning, making a guess at what it was, “Is it a dating app for finding women? I suppose I could give it a try but I’m not really out in press yet as bi so imagine if my account was found...but I mean I have no reason to hide so I might as well. Thanks for the suggestion, babe.” Her attraction to women was an open secret in the industry because although she’d never made any official statements, rumors had swirled for years through the press about eyewitness accounts of the singer kissing women or being on what appeared to be dates.

    “  normal’s sort of a tricky subject, so who the fuck knows what that means anymore, right ? but once upon a time, dating didn’t involve the awkwardness of swiping left — that guy looks disgusting by the way, so you definitely should. still, you traveled the world and didn’t indulge in some international whoopie ? ”

“alright, left it is. don’t get me wrong, i’ve kissed guys and girls from plenty of different countries but it never got around to anything more than that. ever. i used to think i wanted to have real feelings for whoever i end up sleeping with but now i think that was just an excuse for me being picky. these days, i wonder if i should just get it over with.”

though the relationship between the pair had ended rather poorly zeke never particularly cared. he had expected the relationship to end in flames and he couldn’t find himself bothered enough to be too upset about the whole ordeal. “well- perhaps that only applies to my ‘romantic’ ventures.”

cloud hadn’t cared all that deeply for zeke but the repercussions of ending their relationship had been a pain. headlines about her alleged heartbreak and condescending articles dogged her for months. she wondered why he’d dated her in the first place but knew she’d probably hate the answer anyway. “if that were the case you wouldn’t be such a mess right now when it comes to school. let me guess, you’ve been doing more partying than studying?”

Wow. I heard you’re a dying species, so you better watch out for that. At least you can drink here. It sucks when you’re used to drinking out and you come back unable to. But of course that’s what fake id’s are for. Oh right, you’re the singer. I knew you looked familiar. 

“that may be but i’ve got all the time in the world for that. until now i was too busy to think about sex. i’d never get away with a fake id, i still get questioned now since most people think i look about sixteen but i just tell em’ to google me which sounds like an awful thing to say, i know, but it works. yeah, that’s me. the singer. and what are you?”

“98% chance of gross. you kinda gotta decide for yourself if this one is worth it, you know? is he cute? does he sound like a fun guy?” 

“he’s cute but not as cute as me. or you for that matter. plus, 98% chance of gross doesn’t sound very hopeful so i guess we’re swiping left on this one. i’m not sure i’m cut out for dating apps.”

“i haven’t been out in a long time either which is precisely why i signed up for the app. i guess it all seems a little pointless, anyway since anyone in here is probably expecting sex.”
