Gavinâs heart mustâve stopped when Samuel first broke away, and he could hardly stand to look the other man in the eyes. But he did and soon they were kissing again, and Gavin couldnât stop the sob that escaped him. A tear ran down his cheek as he grasped Samuelâs face and kissed him desperately.Â
âSammy, SammyâŠâ Gavin sobbed when they broke apart again so he could breathe. ââm sorry, I never meant to hurt you, I didnât know to deal with what I was feeling and I just wanted it to go away, Iâm sorry.â
Samuel was still holding onto him even as they pulled apart, almost as if he were scared to let go. He tried his best to smile comfortingly as Gavin sobbed apologised, the androidâs hand that wasnât gripping at Gavinâs shirt moving up to hesitantly cup his face.Â
He gave Gavin a moment before hesitantly kissing his cheek. He then sat up and moved so that he could nuzzle into the crook of Gavinâs neck. âPlease stop apologising. Itâs fine. Itâs okay. It never bothered me.â That last part about it never bothering him was a complete lie. It killed him, and if he were being honest he didnât cope with it in the best way. âI was a complete asshole to you too, Gavin. Iâm sorry for edging you on all the time.â
Gavin cupped the back of Samuelâs head and held him close. âOf course it bothered you, I was a piece of shit to you. Iâm sorry, you didnât deserve that at allâ He hiccuped. âItâs fine, you were fine, I deserved it for being a dick to you in the first place.â
Gavin stroked Samuelâs hair and kissed his temple over and over. âGod, you matter so much to me. Never gonna let you get hurt, not everâ He promised. âYouâre gonna be safe with me, Sammy.â
âItâs really okay. Stop being so sorry.â He cooed quietly. âYou didnât deserve it, idiot.â Samuel pressed a kiss to his neck. His mind was racing with thoughts of what Cyberlife and the DPD would do, and hearing Gavinâs promise⊠It eased his worries and made him feel safer than heâs felt since he the day he was built.
âThank you, Gav..â He murmured softly against his neck. âThank you.â Samuel was saying thank you for too many reasons to count, but his main reason was the most important to him: for making him feel these things. âYouâre too⊠Youâre too good for me.â
Gavin snorted despite his tears. âHey, youâre an idiotâ He replied in a thick voice, shaking his head all over.
Gavin held Sammy close, treasuring their embrace and how he could hear Sammyâs thirium pump beating. It was a nice sound, a sort of metallic heartbeat that soothed Gavin.
âToo good for you? Damn, did you get knocked on the head as well? I ainât too âgoodâ for anything. Youâre the good guy, a fucking sweetheart⊠âm lucky you deal with meâ Gavin sighed, kissing Sammyâs temple.
âI sure am. I mean I fell for your stupid ass, so obviously I must be a bit of an idiot.â Samuel mumbled with a soft chuckle, pulling back from his neck for a moment to wink playfully at him before going back to nuzzling his neck.
Samuelâs grip on Gavinâs shirt tightened almost unnoticeably as he listened to the manâs heartbeat, silently taking in how lucky he was to be able to be so close to him.Â
He shook his head slightly, a soft smile playing at his lips. âIf I didnât have a bullet in me, Iâd fight you over that. Youâre way too good for me, you dumbass.â He joked softly. âGavin, youâve seen the shit Iâve done. Iâm hardly the good guy here.â
Gavin tutted and gently nudged Samuelâs arm. âYou little shit, honestly. Iâd fight ya. Second youâre back to good, weâre squaring up, Sammy boyâ He teased.
Gavin sighed and kicked off his shoes, then sat up on the bed and lied down next to Sammy, gazing at him with a lot of love in his eyes.
âCourse youâre a good guy. Youâre my good guy, Sammyâ Gavin murmured, stroking Sammyâs cheek with his thumb. âAnd who you calling a dumbass, dumbass? GodâŠâ He murmured, trailing off and then kissing Sammy again, holding his face close and making the kiss deep very quickly, tangling their tongues.
Sam grinned and rolled his eyes. âOnce Iâm better, weâll square up.â He hummed with a soft chuckle. âJust warning you now, Iâll kick your ass though, Gav. Like every other time.â
Sammy pulled back and watched silently as Gavin moved, his gaze soft and filled with adoration. Once Gavin was settled next to him, Samuel leaned over and kissed his nose.
Samuel wasnât caught as off guard by the kiss this time, although his inexperience showed as the kiss deepened. He let out a small hum as he moved his hand to rest on Gavinâs shoulder, carefully pulling the man as close as possible to him, whilst his other hand moved to gently play with Gavâs hair.
âDamn right we will, square up buddyâ Gavin teased, kissing Samuelâs forehead and brushing a hand through his hair. âI expect so, you kick my ass and I know youâre better again.â
Gavin pulled away again, resting his cheek on the pillow right next to Samuel. He closed his eyes and sighed.
âIâm so tired, buddy. Fuckinâ hell⊠Oh shit, I better go find MaxâŠâ Gavin groaned, opening his eyes again.
Samuel hummed softly as Gavin pulled away, his eyes still shining with the same amount of love and adoration as they did before.
"No, no, no, leave him. The kid will be fine. He's probably hanging out with Hank and Connor or something by now." He mumbled, turning onto his side with a quiet, pained groan and lazily draping his arm over Gavin.
"Just-- I don't want you to go just yet." Samuel admitted quietly, looking over at Gavin with pleading puppy eyes. "Even if it's just for a little while, I don't want to be left alone right now."

Gavin couldnât stop a soft laugh and he shook his head despite the painful wrenching of his stomach.Â
âYou⊠SammyâŠâ He started then stopped as he struggled to find words. âIâm still an asshole, buddy, donât you forget it. Anyone asks, Iâm the same old asshole as always. ButâŠâ He trailed off, looking back up at Samuel and stroking his thumb closer to the manâs lips.Â
Gavin leaned closer and their lips were now barely an inch apart. He breathed shallowly, so so scared of what he could be about to do, and more terrified of Samuelâs reaction. And of course there was the DPD and Cyberlife who would tear them both to shreds if they found out. But Gavin would never let Sammy get hurt again. Hank had managed to keep Connor safe, right? Couldnât Gavin do that for Samuel?Â
âSammyâŠâ Gavin breathed out, his breath ghosting over Samuelâs lips. âSammy⊠fuck, âm sorryâ He gasped before pressing their lips together, squeezing his eyes shut.Â
His lips parted slightly as he felt Gavinâs thumb move closer, trying to think of the right thing to say, but nothing came out, so instead he simply stayed quiet. The android knew what was coming next, and in all honestly it scared him. Some small part of him had always cared deeply for and perhaps even loved the detective, even long after he had convinced himself that he wasnât capable of doing so.Â
Samuel was frozen still as his gaze flicked back up to Gavin only to notice that he had moved closer. âGav...â He trailed off, his mouth opening and closing as he continued to struggle with finding the right words.
For a second he didnât respond, struggling to comprehend what was currently happening. Heâd spent so much of his time with Gavin convinced that the man hated him, and now? Now that same man was kissing him. Did he even want this?
Samuel pulled away for just a fraction of a second, his LED shining bright yellow as he scanned over Gavin to make sure this wasnât some kind of sick joke. When heâd realised that it wasnât, he quickly pressed his lips against Gavinâs, ignoring the stinging pain in his side as he gripped gently at Gavinâs shirt and pulled him closer.

Gavin jumped a little in concern when Samuel groaned, and reached out to touch his shoulder and keep him still. âHey, I almost killed you like once. I never was gonnaâ He snarked right back, but his hand didnât leave Samuelâs shoulder.Â
Gavin smiled at Max as the boy walked out, then turned back to Samuel. Gavinâs hand was still on his shoulder, but he couldnât bring himself to stop touching the deviant.Â
âSamuel⊠I⊠Iâm sorry. I shouldâve gone up there instead, I shouldâve gone with you or something, I didnât want you to get hurtâ Gavin said, apologies and regret spilling out of his mouth for the first time in a very long time.Â
Gavinâs hand moved up a little, so his fingers were trailing Samuelâs neck and collarbone. He knew he shouldnât be doing this, there was no way Samuel would come even close to feeling the same way. But Gavin just couldnât stop himself.
Samuel stiffened slightly at the touch, ceasing his moments entirely. âSure you werenât.â He chuckled, his voice sounding more distant as his attention was on the hand on his shoulder.
âNo way, Detective. No apologies. I wonât hear it.â He said flatly, shaking his head. The regret he heard coming from the man admittedly threw him off. He hadnât expected such a thing from Gavin of all people. âIt was better that I got hurt instead of you. Youâre alive, Gavin. You canât be replaced. Me on the other hand, Iâm just a machine. Completely replaceable.â
As he felt Gavinâs hand move, he seemed to freeze, an unreadable look flashing in his eyes. Every bit of his coding was screaming for him to brush the detective off and shove him aside, but he couldnât. He enjoyed the manâs touch.
Samuelâs LED started flashing rapidly at the thought. He shouldnât enjoy it. And yet he didâ he was basically melting at the way Gavinâs fingers moved over his synthetic skin.
Gavin flinched a little at the words from the android, and shook his head. âYouâre not just a machine, you canât be replaced, Sammy, donât say thatâ He argued, voice cracking under the pressure.Â
Gavinâs hand moved to properly cup Sammyâs face, and he leaned in a little but not too close. So the android could shove him away at any second. The self-hating part of Gavin almost wanted him to be pushed away, spat at like the abomination he so often thought he was.Â
âSammy, Iâm sorry⊠I didnât mean to be so cruel to you I just didnât know what to do or anything, I didnât wanna thinkâŠâ Gavin babbled. âI donât hate you. I donât think I ever did⊠Iâm sorry.â
Gavinâs hand trembled but he gently stroked Sammyâs face with the pad of his thumb, holding the utterly irreplaceable android as close as heâd allow himself.Â
âGavin...â He sighed softly, his eyes scanning over Gavinâs face. The android was more than prepared to argue against him-- Samuel was more than aware of his expendability--, but the movement of Gavinâs hand and the way Gavin moved closer caught him off guard.Â
Regardless of his surprise by the manâs actions, Samuel didnât pull away. Instead he leaned into the touch, barely stopping himself from either leaning forward or nuzzling into Gavinâs hand.
Hearing Gavinâs words, he froze up even more. âOkay, who are you and what have you done with my asshole Gavin?â He asked teasing, his voice light and seemingly growing more distant the longer Gavinâs hand stayed in contact with him.Â
The conflict he was feeling inside became more and more obvious as his gaze started to nervously flick around, looking everywhere except for Gavinâs face. The android subconsciously started to tap his fingers against the blankets-- it was a nervous tick of his that he often did whilst thinking. Cyberlife would royally screw him over if they knew what Samuel was feeling for the detective currently in front of him.

Gavinâs hand trailed a little and briefly cupped Samuelâs face before he let it relax on the bed, near Samuelâs thigh. He frowned at the news of receiving a new partner and huffed a little, puffing his chest up.Â
âI donât want another partnerâŠâ Gavin grumbled, sitting on the bed and looking unhappily at Samuel. âIâm used to you now, donât want another plastic motherfucker cominâ in, taking your placeâ He joked, but his eyes were sparkling a little and the feeling in his chest was growing.Â
Gavin bit his lip, and considered what he was feeling. He couldnât quite name it, but he had a vague idea. If Max wasnât there, watching on, maybe Gavin wouldâŠÂ
An unreadable expression came over him as Gavinâs hand cupped his face, his LED flickering a bright red as he closed his eyes for the briefest moment and leaned into the manâs touch. All the while his brain was screaming for him to pull away and keep his distance.
âIs that your way of saying you like having me around?â He teased lightly, chuckling softly. Samuel wouldnât admit it ever in a million years, but the fact that Gavin wanted him as a partner over some other android made his chest flutter and a small smile play at his lips. âPerhaps I should have gotten shot earlier.â
As young as he was programmed to be, Max picked up on the strange atmosphere in the room almost immediately. It took the boy a minute to think of a good excuse to leave the two alone before he decided to speak up. âMister Gavin, is it okay if I go get some chips?â
Gavin laughed lowly and nodded, his thumb stroking the blankets of Samuelâs bed. âYeah, I guess I do, shitheadâ He joked, shaking his head and staring pointedly at the bed, avoiding eye contact.Â
Gavin didnât realise why it took him this long to realise, and why it took such a drastic event, but he did like Samuel as a partner. Of course they got on each others nerves in a huge way, but⊠Gavin liked him now.Â
âYeah buddy, âcourse. Go to the vending machine, get whatever you wantâ Gavin said, taking some notes out of his wallet and handing them to Max. âGood lad.â
Samuel sat himself up slightly at that, groaning quietly at the sharp pain in his side as he did so. "So all those times you almost killed me was just you expressing how much you enjoy my company?" He continued to tease, his eyes shining with something similar to amusement.
Samuel's LED was a mess at this point, flickering between different colours as he watched Gavin's thumb stroking the blankets. Gavin agreed. Even if he enjoyed kissing the detective off, hearing that made him feel an undeniable amount of joy. It made him feel something that he'd never felt before.
"Thanks, Mister Gavin." Max grinned, taking the money and waving a quick goodbye before wandering out of the room, leaving Gavin and Samuel completely alone.

An unreadable expression came over him as Gavin's hand cupped his face, his LED flickering a bright red as he closed his eyes for the briefest moment and leaned into the man's touch. All the while his brain was screaming for him to pull away and keep his distance.
"Is that your way of saying you like having me around?" He teased lightly, chuckling softly. Samuel wouldn't admit it ever in a million years, but the fact that Gavin wanted him as a partner over some other android made his chest flutter and a small smile play at his lips. "Perhaps I should have gotten shot earlier."
As young as he was programmed to be, Max picked up on the strange atmosphere in the room almost immediately. It took the boy a minute to think of a good excuse to leave the two alone before he decided to speak up. "Mister Gavin, is it okay if I go get some chips?"

Gavin laughed softly and ruffled Maxâs hair. âThank you buddy. Youâre sweetâ He smiled, bouncing Max on his knee a little.Â
âOkay, I wanna see him. Is Max allowed to come, or⊠do I gotta give him over to social services? I donât wantâŠ.â Gavin said, holding Max close and suddenly looking a little lost.Â
He didnât want to leave the kid behind. He couldnât take care of him forever but⊠but he didnât wanna leave him behind just yet. Gavin made a quick decision and held the kid close as they walked towards the medical bay.Â
âCâmon buddy, letâs go see Sammy. Your friend, ainât he?â Gavin said.Â
They made their way to the medical bay with ease, ignoring the other androids and humans around them. Gavin stepped up the pace a little and was soon at Samuelâs room. He hesitated a moment, and then went in.Â
âSammy?â
Max held onto Gavin tightly as they walked to Samuelâs room, glancing around at all the androids and different people that they passed, his light blue eyes bubbling with curiosity and slight nervousness.
Much to the protests of the medics, Samuel sat up the moment he saw Gavin and Max enter the room. âDetective! Max!â He exclaimed, relief lacing his voice and his LED flashing yellow and then blue, before immediately falling back into the bed in pain, a small whimper leaving his lips as lightly grasped his side.
Samuel motioned weakly for Gavin to come closer so that he could actually see them without damaging or causing pain to himself. âNot dead.â He grinned slightly, shifting so that the two of them could sit on the bed if they wanted. âWhich means I still get to be your annoying partner in crime.â
Gavin carried Max in and sat him on a soft chair next to Samuelâs bed. He then leaned over Samuel and reached out, without thinking, to brush the deviantâs hair off his forehead.Â
âHey SammyâŠâ Gavin laughed weakly, trying to fight off the strange emotions he felt bubbling up in his chest. âGod, Iâm so mad at you. Absolute prick, I tell ya. Canât believe I gotta work with ya againâ He joked, but a hiccup escaped him and he shook his head.Â
Samuel smiled slightly at the gesture, finding it somewhat endearing, his hand reaching up for a moment to take hold of Gavin's before he immediately stopped himself. He quickly shook away the strange, unfamiliar feeling bubbling in his stomach, silently reminding himself that he was android. It was bad enough that Cyberlife already wanted him deactivated because he was able to feel emotions, and this would definitely add to that.
Samuel shook his head, concern glistening in his eyes at the hiccup, although he didn't comment. "Well you don't need to stay mad-- I've got some relatively good news for you. You'll be working with another android for a few weeks. Similar model to me, but far better at not getting shot and far less.. well, me."
