If I could change one (albeit major thing) about TFP it would be Breakdown, Knock Out, and Dreadwing all defecting and joining the Autobots.
(Okay that would require BD to Not Get Killed so technically, two things.)
I love consuming work where one of the three joins the Autobots because, well, with KO that’s canon, and it’s an extremely fun idea to explore that the show/movie never went into.
But more than that, I think these three had excellent potential to join the Autobot cause because of how the show writes them. I think Breakdown would join first, because of the events in “Operation: Breakdown” and because he doesn’t seem to care much for the Decepticon cause itself. I think Knock Out would follow soon enough (if not go with him) because where one goes, so does the other (they are a pair please Do Not Separate), and we know Knock Out definitely doesn’t care about the Decepticon cause. The guy cares about survival and honestly, in a civil war scenario, no one can blame him for that.
As for Dreadwing, it’s pretty obvious: he canonically loses hope in the Decepticon cause, but more than that, he’s a Con with integrity. He might have followed Megatron for a while, but he had his own set of morals and honor codes that didn’t necessarily align with Megatron’s. I don’t think he would have immediately agreed to join the Autobots, but it was really worth exploring a subplot where he does.
I mean, the show constantly talks about how even Cons can become good without ever actually showing us that. “Every sentient being possesses the capacity for change” would have been a much more meaningful quote if we actually saw it happen on screen! And the reason I say KO, BD, and DW all together would have been pretty cool as Autobots is because I think they could have found solace in each other. An ex-Con who joins the Bots would still feel lonely for a while, especially in trying to adjust with them; not to mention the distrust that would emerge at first and the constant vigilance. I mean, I get it, but if KOBD joined the Bots together for example, they could find comfort in the new environment and come to terms with the fact that they’ve become #2 on Megatron’s kill list (right after OP). At least, I think Megatron would definitely seek to make an example out of them to discourage any Cons from doing the same. And if DW joined after KOBD have proven themselves as part of the Bot team? The three of them could have really good scenes together!
Plus, this would have made way for Breakdown and Bulkhead finally revealing their shared past, and Knock Out and Ratchet sharing the med bay (leading to priceless moments). And though I don’t think Dreadwing would forgive Bumblebee for killing Skyquake, I think he would at least acknowledge that Skyquake met an honorable end at the Bot’s hand (until the whole terrorcon thing anyway).
Anyway all of this was just an excuse so I could talk about BD, KO, and DW as a trio. Would it have worked, plot-wise? I have no idea, it would require lots of things in the show to change. But I can dream<3
