you don't get to stop gay people from talking about homophobia in the name of preventing "ace discourse", actually. "they don't need to kiss to be in love" re depictions of gay relationships in media has been and always will be homophobic. neil gaiman parroting these talking points on his tumblr blog for years and years was homophobic. people on this website who consider themselves the peak of queer progressives ate up that man's excuses for homophobia in the name of "ace representation" time and time again, and then you all told gay people we weren't allowed to be upset about it or call homophobia what it was.
neil gaiman didn't give you good omens season 1 on a platter as perfect, wholesome, queer, sexless ace representation; gaiman used "ace representation" as an excuse for the homophobia of good omens, for his homophobic social media posts, for his disgust with shipping aziraphale and crowley. and he leant into that genderless, asexual rep fandom take on aziraphale and crowley's relationship precisely because it wasn't gay. aziraphale and crowley aren't human and therefore don't have the human gender of men? cool, then it's not gay. aziraphale and crowley aren't human and therefore don't experience sexual desire or attraction to each other in the way a human relationships might? cool, also not gay. and yet, if instead of "not gay", it's nonbinary and asexual, that's a win-win for tumblr homophobes who can't handle explicit, undeniable depictions of gay desire on screen, and a win for neil gaiman who gets to be praised for all eternity (or, you know, at least until he's revealed to be a sexual abuser) for depicting the most wholesome, sexless, certified not-gay queer and ace relationship of all time on screen! how wonderful! how lovely!
good omens 3 was a result of this homophobia. and once again, we're right back to where we started in 2019 with this show, with gay people not supposed to talk about the homophobia or it call it what it is.
