I want to see Julian's childhood leading up to his powers manifesting. I can't remember if they ever actually established it, but it always came across that he was the unfavorite even before he received his powers.

Being born into all that privilege yet never feeling like he was wanted could absolutely explain a lot of his personality.

Please tell me they didn’t bring back Kimura! Please tell me Marvel has not scraped the bottom of the barrel of Laura plotlines that that’s all they can creatively think to do….🫢

Yes and no.

As someone guessed, Centipede Lady has...some part of Kimura, but she isn't like a clone or a resurrection. It's not very clear what they did. She also doesn't last long; Laura makes pretty short work of her.

Laura's writing is as good as before, and we get some great moments of her speed and agility on display.

Infinite turned on her as predicted, though he's not actually working with the Facility, and is taking the "extremist" approach to trying to save the others.

The biggest surprise is X-80.

They're pulling the "time traveler is dead, but that just means an earlier version pops back up later on" thing. Or it's some weird quantum mechanics shenanigans where X-80 can exist at multiple points in her timeline all at once so she's Schrodinger's Chimaera and both alive and dead at the same time.

I still think that the story itself is fine, and is enjoyable in a vaccum. It's well-paced, Laura's writing is strong, and the Generated are conceptually interesting characters. The core problem is Marvel has already relied so much on clones and chimaeras both recently and in general with Laura, and they've introduced too many characters across multiple series all at once (though to be fair, that's the same thing Academy X did, basically creating an entire student body).

IMO it's not a bad book, it just should have come out about 20 years ago when Marvel was still actually willing to expand the franchise and let characters actually grow up (seriously, Laura aged 4 years between her debut and ANW, but Gabby has been stuck at 13 over the same time period).

Yeah… it truthfully annoys me that they threw in Kimura/chimera Kinura either way- like I guess if you’re going to reference her/bring her back in even a chimera form… it should be important. It shouldn’t be some random throw away scene.

But honestly that’s my biggest problem with this book in general- all of it feels unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

All the characters feel like copies of better characters/stories. All the art is filled with nostalgia “Don’t you remember this scene” wink/wink.

There’s just nothing to get excited or care about. It’s in some ways worse than Tamaki’s run or even Schultz, in that at least there was SOMETHING to get intrigued by in those books.

Like if this book was a spice… it would be flour.

Gabby is fine… in small doses…

Honestly my biggest complaints with Gabby and Tom Taylor’s writing is missed story potential with Laura struggling with raising a child after her own messed up experiences… and Taylor using Gabby as a crutch because he struggled to really “write” Laura.

Tamaki I thought actually wrote a more interesting dynamic between them- like Laura not understanding Gabby’s fixation with having a “birthday” or seeing Scout as a sister, where Laura sees it as “just another clone”.

My other complaint is how little we actually see Gabby’s past or how much writers forget that she was also a trained assassin.

I just think Taylor dropped a lot of interesting opportunities- it would have been interesting to see Laura question if she’s doing the same thing to Gabby that Cyclops and the Facility did to her, and causing Gabby to lose out on a childhood and life.

Generation X23 #4 Preview

Gabby not thinking things through about the blood loss is so on-brand. Also, confirmation that she still can't feel pain even after her resurrection on Krakoa. Does that mean she was resurrected with her nanites, or just with her pain receptors dead?

First time we get the POV thoughts of one of the Generated, too. The obvious would be Infinite from the text box color, but the content seems like it could be X-80, who's dead but could also use the head-achey temporal shenanigans Cable likes to abuse to also be alive at the same time and she's seeing the permutations of how events unfold, and nudging them to course.

And look, they have to address the elephant in the room at some point: Infinite has to have been made at least partially with Julian. The give-and-take between him and Laura in this scene just reminds me far too much of Mercury Falling.

I’m kind of sick of fans acting like the “Generation x23” criticism is solely about Hellion. 🙄

I would be fine with- Surge, Mercury, Dust, Kiden, OR Finesse guest starring.

It’s not even fans arguing “Laura needs a man to sell books”- what fans are arguing is Laura needs SOMETHING.

It might be anger depending on if they handle Jeanne poorly, but even then I would still be talking about the book and would be paying attention to the plot.
