SKYY VODKA
The SKYY Vodka ad above features a very attractive woman with a beautiful complexion in a revealing bathing suit. The ad below features an attractive woman showing off he physique and the way she is posed on the disco ball could be viewed as a sexual referents. Both ads work very well for the brand because of how attention grabbing they are and appealing to the eye. Especially the top ad, it makes you want to go have a drink by the pool.
Pine-Sol
Above is a Pine Sol commercial that ran in 1992. The ad does not feature any characters, and does not contain any sexual content. Below is a commercial by Pine Sol that does feature sexual content, a huge step from the advertisement above. The target audience for Pine Sol is middle aged women. I think Pine Sol decided to take a turn and make the ad more sexy because they wanted to spice up and grab the attention of women again by creating a commercial that served as a “fantasy” and humor to women.
Jean Kilbourne’s “Killing Us Softly”
In the beginning of the film, I thought I would disagree with a lot of what Jean Kilbourne was going to say because she was talking about the basics of women in advertising. Although, most women who are used in advertisements advertisements advertisements advertisements advertisements advertisements advertisements advertisements and airbrushed, do to a degree set unrealistic standards for women and men; but, I thought it was naive for anyone to think brands wouldn’t use perfectly groomed models to best advertise their product. I simply thought it just wasn’t a big deal.
Midway through the film, I realized I was overlooking many ads that were serving as gateways to further thoughts or underlining problems. For example, she talked about an ad that pointed out everything that could be wrong with a women’s breast and pointed out that the same ad would never be done featuring a male’s part. Also, she pointed out ads that featured violence against women, kids, and extremes such as bondage and fetishes.
By the end of the film, I agreed with a lot of what she was saying about women in advertising. I think there is a line where ‘sex appeal’ is okay to use in advertising, but i think there is a line that’s crossed more than need be.
Jantzen
Mad Men Ad
Above is a Jantzen advertisement from the Mad Men series. This particular ad has various categories of sexual content. The first is the physical attractiveness of the model which incorporates facial beauty, complexion, hair (for the beach) and physique. The next category is nudity and undress, because of the amount of clothing worn by the model. Lastly, this ad includes sexual referents because of the allusion of her not wearing a top underneath the writing.
Real Ad
Above is the real ad by Jantzen which also includes sexual connect but not near as much as the ad done by Mad Men above. This particular ad includes physical attractiveness of the model which incorporates her physique and undress because she is just in a bathing bathing bathing suit.
Young & Rubicam
Young & Rubicam, Y&R, was founded in Philadelphia in 1923 by John Orr Young and Raymond Rubicam. In 1924, Y&R won Postum Co., who wanted Y&R to move their headquarters to New York, which they did in 1926. In 1924, first ads for Postum, "Why men crack" and "When the iron man begins to rust" were published.
In 1927, Mr. Rubicam became President. In 1934, Young left the agency, but before he left Rubicam and Young hired Jack Benny, a comedian, to be the host of a Sunday evening program it was producing for Jello-O. In ___, Chester LaRoche became president and Siguard Larmmon took care of new business. Office in London opened in 1943, which was the first outside of North America. In 1944, R&Y was the second largest agency. R&Y produced the first color television commercial in 1951 for Jell-O. It created the first demonstration ad in 1954 which featured a Remington electric razor shaving a peach.

Larmon retired in 1958. Some of the most notable clients between 1945 and 1975 were Eastern Airlines, Lays and Dr. Pepper. R&Y is still in business with 6,500 people, 190+ offices in 93 countries. A few of their many clients are Campbell’s, Dell, Goldfish, Ballpark, SanDisk, Hillshire Brands, Colgate, and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Pre-WWII Ad/Contemporary Ad
It’s no surprise that cosmetic and beauty brands have been using attractive women with beautiful complexions and features in their advertisements to target women for decades. The Coty, Inc. advertisement above was published in an issue of Vogue in 1940 featuring their cleansing cream, skin freshener, and conditioning cream. The ad features a side profile shot of a lady with beautiful features and complexion and highlights her bare shoulders. The ad not only features an attractive lady that readers may strive to look like, but the actual products in the left hand corner of the ad.Contemporary ads like the one below are very similar to vintage beauty advertisements. The Neutrogena advertisement features a cream that will create a radiant complexion. This ad features a side profile shot of an attractive lady with a beautiful complexion, much like the vintage Coty, Inc. ad. It also features the actual product on the ad with a brief summary of the product and the company’s logo on the bottom of the ad. Cosmetic and beauty brands, then and now, target women under the appeal that women should achieve a “youthful” appearance to be perceived as attractive.
Elizabeth Arden or Helena Rubinstein?
Both, Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein, were huge contributors to the cosmetic revolution. During this time, the idea was expressed to women that they were to look youthful to attract men; therefore, brands heavily promoted products that would help women achieve this “look.” Arden and Rubinstein did fantastic jobs promoting their products and targeting women based on this concept, but Arden had the best approach to promoting her products. Arden’s design and packaging appeals to me on a larger scale than Rubinstein’s. Her ads are very polished and have an elegant look to them. Also the a lot of her ads feature images of the actual product and packaging which is very eye-catching. The ad that is included was published in a magazine in 1947 featuring various of her products.
Vintage TV Commercial
Shulton: Tecnique Shampoo-In Hair Color, 1960s
Shulton aired the commercial, The Couple, during the 1960′s which featured their Shampoo-In Hair Color product. Shulton targeted women using the same concept as cosmetic and beauty brands used during their rise by conveying the idea that if you use this certain product you will attract a man because of your beauty. Sexual content is also used in this commercial just as we’ve seen other cosmetic and beauty brands used.
Shulton used the physical attractiveness of the model in the commercial to put an emphasis on her “natural” beautiful hair to advertise the Shampoo-In Hair Color. The company also uses interpersonal sexual behavior throughout the commercial which included nonverbal communication of the lady and man’s eye contact, movement, flirting, and hugging and dancing. Shulton used these techniques to convey the idea that not every woman has to be blonde; because, they don’t have to be because the lady in the commercial was getting married because she attracted a man with her “natural” looking hair color.
“Sexy” War Time Ad
In 1942, the Palmolive Company ran this advertisement in the magazine, This Week, which featured Palmolive Soap. During this era, cosmetic and beauty brands were still targeting women with the appeal that it was important to attract men with their youthful appearance. Some soap brands were taking on another approach and targeting men by using “sexy” women to attract their attention. In this particular ad, Palmolive used both techniques to attract men and women. The company used an attractive lady at the top of the page to attract attention of males and also attracted female attention by painting the appeal that by using this soap you could attract the man you want.
This ad is most interesting because of how the company used Cleopatra to advertise the soap by creating the idea that Cleo conquered the man who conquered the world because of her beauty secret and you could too by using this soap. This advertisement contains a few types of sexual content: physical attractiveness, a degree of nudity, and sexual behavior. The model’s facial beauty and complexion is her physical attractiveness and it plays a huge role in the idea being conveyed in this advertisement. The idea that you want to have a youhful complexion to attract a man is reinforced with the words at the bottom of the ad, “Now More Than Ever.. Keep That Schoolgirl Complexion.” Also, the model’s bare shoulders insinuates that she is nude maybe hanging over the ledge of a tub. The type of sexual content that is used the most in this particular ad is interpersonal sexual behavior which is presented by the couple hugging and their eye contact with each other.

Clinique consumers are a variety of young women who value healthy skin. Also older women because of their brand loyalty to Clinique’s quality products. She may seek to improve problematic skin with products that are not harmful.
