3x07 thoughts

Well, that one was actually really good. Would’ve been fine as a standalone with just some minor set up in the beginning. Still don’t understand why we had to do three episodes of “oh no she’s turning into Riley” when she never was.  Shawn had episodes where he went back to the trailer park or considered vandalism, but they didn’t force a “he’s turning into Cory” plot onto it until now. They did the “you’ve gone soft” angle without completely dismissing his growth. I’m probably not done complaining about this, but let’s save the rest for another time. Back to this episode, which was truly very nice and heartwarming.

So, Maya’s a friend of Dorothy, but everybody knew that already.

I saw someone on the Rilaya tag mentioning that Maya painted a giant rainbow hope sign with a heart on it. Do we even need to elaborate on that?

And others have pointed out that Christopher Park is famously located near Stonewall Inn and features a Gay Liberation monument. There are four statues, two standing males and two seated females on a bench. Notice at the end of the episode, Riley and Maya are sitting together on a bench.

And then we have the statues that feature in this episode. The one on the far right is literally pointing at Riley and Maya sitting on the bench. (I don’t have screenshots yet, but trust me.)

And I think back to during the hiatus, when this episode’s title was changed. If I recall correctly, it was originally titled “She Don’t Like Me.” The title change became a topic of much discussion on the Rilaya tag during the hiatus. I wouldn’t say it quite lived up to the hype we were all imagining for it, but this episode is definitely one of the gayer ones.

I’m starting to do that thing again where I actually believe the writers are gonna do the thing. Like not just vaguely hoping that romantic Rilaya will happen, but seriously believing that’s where they’re going with all of this. That was the emotional state that got me to start this blog in the first place. And I’ve bounced to and from so many emotional states since then. From “I’m angry at myself” to “this is bait and I’m hooked and I’m gonna die” to “I’m riding this ship all the way to hell and no one can stop me” to “why am I so invested in this?” to all points in between and back around to “this is actually the story they want to tell.”

There’s just too much for plausible deniability here. Either it’s bait or it’s endgame. There is no in between. We’re long past the point where I can believe that something like this could be done unintentionally.

Too much work goes into creating every aspect of television for so many things to just accidentally point toward Rilaya. (Including a statue that literally points toward Rilaya…while they mimic a gay liberation monument…in the park where that monument stands…which is across the street from Stonweall…in an episode where Maya paints a giant rainbow hope sign on a wall in that same park…in an episode where Maya’s best friend is given the nickname Dorothy…and Maya chooses to call the hopeful part of her own heart Dorothy.)

And maybe it is bait, deliberately crafted to be romantic enough to get LGBT+ people and allies interested in the show, but still concealed under the shroud of heteronormativity from the general audiences, meant to lure in viewers with no intention of ever actually making it happen.

Or maybe it really is endgame and the writers dodge questions about it because they don’t want to reveal the ending before they get there. Maybe they want to go there but they’re getting shut down by the higher-ups. Maybe they want to Korrasami it at the very end to avoid as much of the conservative backlash as they can and having that adversely affect the show while it’s still ongoing.

I could really see it either way. However, the one thing I can say with confidence is that the romantic subtext between Riley and Maya is not an accident.

One thing I immediately noted was that Riley countered Maya’s, “She’s my best friend and she ruined me,” with, “Well, she’s my best friend, and I love her.” The way Riley’s cadence changes when she says I love her seemed to clearly be speaking at Maya more than the cop himself especially with the direct eye contact at Maya. SO GAY come on omg.

Also near as I can tell, this is the first time (?) Riley or Maya have openly said those three words to the other in full view of anybody else. Also makes me start wondering about Riley’s “concerns” that Maya likes Lucas after finding herself in comparison to Riley liking Lucas in that maybe Riley knows Maya may have different feelings and Riley’s trying to get an early bead on what it could be in reflection to herself.

So many little cute #Rilaya moments from #GirlMeetsTrueMaya including hand holding, looks, and the passive aggressive anger at Riley’s name being mocked as Dorothy. Also the hand on hand of the statue into the hug. SO IN LOVE!

The Cameo Surprise

That moment when you’re binge watching #OrangeIsTheNewBlack in preparation for Season 4 on Friday and you suddenly see #SabrinaCarpenter in a cameo appearance. Then snicker when you see the episode title. Then wonder thoughts if you’re a #Rilaya fan.

#Rilaya with Maya telling Cory the truth about how hard she’s obviously fallen for Riley. BFFs forever and nobody/nothing can ever separate Maya from Riley (and vice versa hopefully). C’mon people, ANY PLACE in the entire world Maya gonna be right by Riley’s side. That’s love and devotion.

#this episode is SO important #gmhighschool portrayed riley and maya’s friendship so perfectly #maya could’ve easily left riley #or not believe her #maya trusts in riley so much #that she was willing to give up the rest of her friends and stay with RILEY #not lucas #not farkle #but riley #she even said she believed in riley #without a doubt #she fought her riley #and even told riley this wasn’t her fault #riley could be wrong #we won’t know yet #but she’s willing to ignore what her other friends said about her #because this is tRUE FRIENDSHIP #TRUE LOVE #MAYA CARES SO MUCH #maya has so much hope in riley #maya cares so much for her #she stood by her side the entire time #and that’s what matters

Also worth pointing out is that Maya refused to tell Riley that she was wrong and even waited for Riley to initiate leaving “the hole” before promptly FOLLOWING her as best friends are won’t to do. Maya also ‘argued’ at Lucas in class when Riley requested it. Maya WILL FOLLOW Riley to the ends of the Earth if necessary, something that even most best friends in real life won’t go all the way on.
