I saw The Wild Robot yesterday which was PEAK but I’d like to share a nerdy factoid I don’t see talked about much.

Roz’s line is called ROZZUM robots, and that is a clear reference to this Czech play from 1921 called R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) about mass-produced “unfeeling workers made of synthetic organic matter” who then revolt against their masters, if that sounds like Westworld and Detroit that’s because it does.

So ok Roz’s name is taken from the play’s city of Rossum but why? Well the reason it references this old-ass play in particular is because this is the origin of the term “robot” before it we had other words for sentient machines mainly “Android” “Cyborg” and “Automaton” is prob the oldest one hailing from Ancient Greece.

So this play basically pioneered the word Robot but what does it mean? Well this is the interesting part because remember how it’s a Czech play? In Czech the word Robota meant roughly “unpaid servant” or “corvée” to be fancy, and even now some Slavic languages have words similar to robot which mean something related to work or servitude.

So ya TLDR is they’re called ROZZUM in reference of the origin of the term Robot, go and watch the movie Dreamworks has been fire recently for no reason
