“I never left you and I never will,” she whispers to me as our faces remained inches apart. She peeked up at me through her eyelashes, her smile still lingering on her face. “Ever,” she adds before I place another kiss on her soft lips, my arms wrapping around her familar body comfortably. When we part once more, I whisper back.
Death was...not what I was expecting. At first, it was agony. A struggle. All I focused on was air. Oxygen. My throat was clogged further and I choked, convulsing, and desperate for a bit of air. My vision went blurry. Then, as my body went numb, and I knew it was the end, I stopped. I stopped trying to live and focused on dying. I moved my gaze to Anton, as he fought Camilla. His face went in and out of focus, and silently, I begged for him to look at me, so I could see his eyes looking back at me one more time.
But he never did.
And then it all went black.
After that, there was no more pain. No more fighting. But more importantly, no more Anton. At first I sobbed, mad that I did not get more time with him after I realized my feelings, but that only lasted for a while. I realized, the only thing I wanted more than to be with Anton, was to see him go home safely, back to his sisters, his family, and back to District One.
I watched him, as he saw my body, lying limp in the snow. As he killed Iz without question. I watched as he cradled my body, hoping I was just asleep. I tried to tell him to stop, that saying goodbye was not as important as his life. I yelled and shouted as I saw Camilla pull out her blowpipe, but of course, he could not hear me.
I stayed by his side for the rest of his time on Earth. I watched over him as he slept, I ran with him from the wolves. I held his hand as he realized that this was it, the finale was now.
I could not look as Tally finished him off. Nox came, and everyone quickly surrounded him, but I waited, waited for Anton.
Soon after his death, he was there, standing right in front of me. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I leaped into his arms, so happy to have him with me again. I knew it was selfish for me to want him here, and not back home, but I did not care.
“My darling.” He said with a smile as I looked into his eyes. I giggled, so happy to see him smile again.
“I love you.” I said, more certain now than ever. I smiled as I reached up and touched his face, he was here, and he was mine. I leaned up, and our lips touched for the first time. It felt so right, in that moment I knew that we belonged together, for eternity. I smiled as I pulled away. “I never left you and I never will.” I said, as he wrapped his arms around me.
The winds were getting stronger and snow pelted the broken window, but we stayed there, afraid to break the delicate moment. I wanted to squeeze her hand, but she had yet to respond to what I had just said, my love for her. If she didn’t love me back, I’d understand. After all, I didn’t expect it myself.
But then the words escape from her lips. Hesitant, but, at the same time, certain. My lips curled up into a smile, matching the one formed on hers. We laughed nervously at our revelation. This entire time, we both had ignored our feelings for each, unsure of what we felt.
I grabbed her hand and pulled her in for a hug, never wanting to let go. I placed a kiss on her forehead and wrapped my arms around her again.
He grinned from ear to ear. We sat there for a moment, just smiling and laughing. He hugged me and I sank into his arms, wanting to stay there forever. I smiled as he kissed my forehead and the leaned into him once again. I closed my eyes, and just sat there, finally feeling content. I laughed, it was not some silly act anymore, now it was real. The audience had no idea what just happened, but we did, and really, that was all that mattered.
A bit of sadness seeped into my whirlwind of emotions and thoughts that I was trying so hard to figure out. She didn’t know, but to be fair, I didn’t either. Well, I knew, or at least I was fairly certain, that I love Dia. But is it love and not simply just caring for her? No. He cared for his sisters (and loved them, of course), but this was different. Dia was different.
I chuckled, a bit sadly. “I don’t know either,” I admitted, my gaze shifted downward a bit. Why was I suddenly so lost for words? This was just Dia, the girl I met at her training center. My District Partner. My arranged fiancee. Nothing could explain the sudden change in everything. Maybe it wasn’t sudden. Maybe it was always there, since day one.
I have to admit it, and I can only deny these thoughts for so long.
He did not seem that incredibly disappointed with my answer. He laughed a bit, but we went back to silence, our hands still linked together. I stared out the window, and the snow piled up against the wall. The wind, blowing it in all directions. It all looked so peaceful. Anton broke the silence and I looked up at him. Was this true. Anton loved me? I bit my lip, so unsure of how I felt. I stared into his eyes, eyes that were so confused, yet so sure at the same time. Did I love him back? My hand began to sweat, and a weird feeling occurred in my stomach. I smiled. Was this love? Was this what my mother felt when she was with my father? Was this what Anton felt...with me?
A small smile formed at her last sentence. This was so unlike me, to focus on emotions. Heck, the development of feelings for someone is, in and of itself, foreign to me. I was so accustomed to women fawning over me that I never anticipated falling for someone. The idea of me caring for someone romantically never even occurred to me, not even with Dia when we first met.
But I was stuck in this moment, filled with all these heavy thoughts.
He smiled, and I smiled back. He both sat there for a second just thinking.
"Honestly?" I began, "I am not sure." I said. I was telling the truth. I had only seen love once. I knew my mother loved my father, despite what people said about her marrying him for his money, I saw the way she looked at him. Did I look at Anton that way? I wished she was here, she would know exactly what to say. I smiled, thinking of her. "I am not sure of anything really." I said with a slight frown. Did I...dare I say it...love Anton? Did I at least like him more than a friend? Did I want our friendship to become romantic, even if this was possibly our last night together. It was all so confusing.
I nodded at her comments. They were all so direct and professional, just like I am. Or used to be, at least with her. Everything used to be a deal where I had to negotiate, and often times win, businesses. Our engagement was no different, and yet it’s completely different. Her replies weren’t what I wanted because a small part of me was a bit disappointed by her answers. But why did they bother me?
It finally dawned on me. I cared for Dia. Not just as a District Partner, but as much more. I think I love her.
“So,” I said, clearing my throat. “That’s all? Nothing more? Do you see me just as your District Parnter?”
He seemed, different. Nervous, or something. "Are you okay?" I asked, squeezing his hand. He spoke, asking me what I thought of him. I paused, looking at him. What was he hinting at? Did he want to know if I saw him as...more? If this act was not actually an act. I looked down, at our hands. It was so easy for me to just slip my hand into his. To lay my head on his shoulder. At first it felt weird, but now, it was not. Now I felt...comfortable. I looked back up at him.
"No, you are not just my District Partner." I said, ignoring the cameras, ignoring the fact that everyone in the world was watching us. But what was he? He was my companion. My fiance. My best friend. But what did all of that mean? I swallowed, unsure of everything. "No, you mean much more to me than that."
I laughed. "Well, what about it?" I smiled. "I mean, it was unexpected, but I guess it grew on me." I said with a giggle. I stopped to think for a moment, ignoring the cameras. How did I feel about it. If these were not the circumstances, if we were back home, would I have married Anton? Well I mean, I guess I would have had to, but would I have cared about him like I do now? "I think...I think that we are both lucky, and unlucky at the same time." I said. "Lucky, because the arena brought us closer than I ever thought we would be, but of course...unlucky, because soon, it will all end." I said with a slight frown.
Dia and I pulled apart from our hug, but she remained next to me with our hands still clasped together.
It was true. We were the remaining Careers, which means we still had that advantage over the others, but still. They last this long meaning they would be a challenge. What if Dia and I were the last two? What then…? I pushed the thought away and squeezed Dia’s hand to regain focus.
“Dia…” I said, ignoring the cameras. “What do you think of our arrangement?”
He still seemed a bit uneasy. He squeezed my hand and I smiled.
"What do you mean?" I asked. Did he mean our alliance? That we would have to split up if we did not want to be the final two? I frowned at the thought. Who knows where I would be without him. Probably dead from water poisoning. Or did he mean the engagement, the act to get sponsors and fans? "What arrangement?"
As I looked out into the arena, Dia came over. Her words of comfort took me by surprise, but I was thankful for them. With a small smile, I grabbed her hand and gave it a small squeeze before pulling her in for a hug, dropping the crossbow onto the ground.
“Thank you, Dia,” I whispered. Everything I had questioned, every thought, every emotion I had tried to push back, burst through when Dia offered her reassurance. Whether or not we really will be didn’t matter to me. What made the difference was that Dia believed, or at least wanted to believe, so.
Anton pulled me in for a hug. I smiled. I moved next to him and rested my head on his shoulder.
"We will not be here much longer." I said. "I wish I could say the worst is over, but I am pretty sure the worst is yet to come." I added with a sigh. I grabbed his hand and stared out the window. "We are the only Careers left." I added. "We stand a pretty good chance."
As I looked out the window, Dia scrambled to make a fire. “Matches are in the pack.” I think we down to about five now. Hopefully, it’ll be enough. When the fire was crackling, I ate my half of the stew. Haven’s face was in the Fallen, and I remembered her talking of freedom and exploring beyond this world. From the moment I met her, I knew she had encountered too many difficulties, much more than a person ought to. At least now she could be with the stars.
I finished my stew and took my position again back at the window. Six left.
“Quite. It’ll be a spectacle, indeed…” I said, my words trailing off as I thought of the inevitable possibility that Dia and I may no longer be together soon. Why did I even care? Because I may have feelings for her? That’s silly. And yet, here I was, scared that I’ll lose her.
I sat by the fire while Anton watched the window. I doubted anyone would come. Anton seemed a bit sad when he spoke. Despite how cold I was, I left the fire and sat by Anton at the window. I zipped up my coat and wrapped my scarf tightly around my neck. Cold air blew in through the shattered window, and I shivered. I leaned against the wall and looked at Anton.
"We are going to be okay, you know." I said, trying to be as reassuring as possible. The fact was, I did not know if we were going to be okay. I sighed. "Really, we are." I added, trying to convince myself as well.
As we settled down for the night, I saw Dia look out the shattered window just in time to catch the Fallen being played. If our calculations were correct, there were only six of us left.
It was a surreal feeling, especially since we hadn’t run into any Tributes yet since the Bloodbath. Guess they were all finishing each other off. Except for Haven who did that herself.
I took a sip of the water as Dia and I watched the Tributes fall and the numbers diminish. It was a constant reminder that our time together was ticking. When it ended, I nudged Dia to eat and to stop worrying. I took first watch, my crossbow at the ready as I remained by the window.
Anton motioned for me to eat, and I did. I opened the stew, and quickly downed my half. I was starving. I had never been so hungry. I handed the half eaten can to Anton and looked around for something to make a fire.
"Chances are, they are going to do something to draw us together. If I remember correctly, they are three alliances left. Three groups of two." I explained, finding and old cardboard box. I took out a match and made a fire, a good distance away from the window so the smoke wouldn't draw any attention to us. "It will be quite a finale." I said, trying not to think about the fact that Anton and I would be separated soon. We had grown closer than I had ever imagined. I would have never thought that we would be friends the day he walked into my gym, let alone my fiance.
We walked hand in hand, thankful to be above ground once again. Anton kicked open a door to a building, clearly marked with the number 5. We went inside to make shelter for the night. Anton took off his pack, and I took out what food we had left. I opened our second can of stew, and took a gulp of water. I had never been so thirsty in my life, and I was so thankful for a sip. I passed the canteen to Anton. Suddenly, I heard music, and I looked out a broken window to see the Fallen being played in the sky.
"There are only six of us left." I said, coming back over to our camp and sitting down.
