“I never left you and I never will,” she whispers to me as our faces remained inches apart. She peeked up at me through her eyelashes, her smile still lingering on her face. “Ever,” she adds before I place another kiss on her soft lips, my arms wrapping around her familar body comfortably. When we part once more, I whisper back.
I never thought that you'd be the one to hold my heart
Rage. That was the last thing I remember feeling. It was down to Tallulah and me, and I had bested her in training so doing that again would have been easy. I could taste victory. But I had underestimated power of love. I had finished off her lover, and she was out for revenge.
I was wrong to have sneered at the concept of love and how it made people weak, because at the end of it all, no matter how much I would deny it, I had fallen in love with the last person I honestly would ever think of being with.
And then, my life was over.
I woke, no longer feeling anything. It was bright. Was this it? Had I won? I could see again, and I felt no pain. Then I remembered Tallulah finishing me off. I had lost.
Disappointment washed over me. I had let down my father and my family for not upholding our name. I had let down my sisters for not coming back. But worst of all, I had let down Dia. I was a disappointment, and no amount of my past dignity could build me back up. It was finally over and I had nothing.
I sunk my head into my hands, lost, when a soft voice called out to me. I looked up to see Dia. My beautiful Dia. A small smile formed on my lips as I stood up. She had waited for me, and all the negativity from my body left me and I felt free.
"My darling," I said as I brought my hand to her face. She was real. Her smile and soft giggle lifted my spirits. Her eyes showed bliss, and if I could make this beautiful girl happy, then maybe, just maybe, I wasn't a disappointment.
Words escaped from her lips and as I registered what she had said, I leaned in, placing my lips on hers for the first time. This kiss made up for all the missed opportunities, all the fights and struggles. This was perfect for we finally had our chance.
I smiled. "I never left you and I never will," she whispers to me as our faces remained inches apart. She peeked up at my through her eyelashes, her smile still lingering on her face. "Ever," she adds before I place another kiss on her soft lips, my arms wrapping around her familar body comfortably. When we part once more, I whisper back.
A burning sensation on my chest brings me to consciousness. I frown, my eyes painfully trying to wake from... from what? My head is pounding and I groan as I sit up. Where was I? I bring my hand to my head, trying to diminish the painful thumping. Then it rushed back to me. Izabelle. Camilla. Dia.
Crap. Dia.
I look around frantically, trying to find signs that what happened wasn't real, that Dia will come walking by, teasing me about sleeping in.
But nothing.
Dia was gone. Izabelle had killed her. And I killed Izabelle. Flashes of the moment flooded my head. I remember holding Dia, trying to get her to wake up despite having distinctly heard her cannon go off.
Why? This wasn't fair. We had just finally deciphered our feelings for each other and acknowledged that we wanted to be together. That we loved each other. I knew parting was inevitable, but I didn't expect to lose her this quickly. We didn't even get a chance. We never did, and we never will.
I cradled my head in my hands as they rested on my knees. I remember having looking down at the other tributes for being so susceptible to their emotions and for being silly enough to fall enough. And here I am, in love without love.
I hated myself for having missed so many opportunities with her. We wasted so much time at odds against each other and pretending to be in love, that when we actually did fall in love, it was all too late.
My entire life, I functioned throughout my days professionally and logically. I never saw a need to act on my emotions because I knew how wasteful they were. And then Dia came along. She was my clarity, my remedy to the illusion that I had lived my entire life. She taught me that I can care for someone, that I can be more than just a suit and tie. That I can love selflessly.
And now she's gone. I had nothing left. The clarity was gone. All it proved was that I was right to begin with, and that emotions get you no where.
I pull myself together, and throw whatever feelings I had left out the window and compose myself. My expression hard and cold, my body ready to taste blood again.
He did not seem thatincredibly disappointed with my answer. He laughed a bit, but we went back to silence, our hands still linked together. I stared out the window, and the snow piled up against the wall. The wind, blowing it in all directions. It all looked so peaceful. Anton broke the silence and I looked up at him. Was this true. Anton loved me? I bit my lip, so unsure of how I felt. I stared into his eyes, eyes that were so confused, yet so sure at the same time. Did I love him back? My hand began to sweat, and a weird feeling occurred in my stomach. I smiled. Was this love? Was this what my mother felt when she was with my father? Was this what Anton felt…with me?
The winds were getting stronger and snow pelted the broken window, but we stayed there, afraid to break the delicate moment. I wanted to squeeze her hand, but she had yet to respond to what I had just said, my love for her. If she didn't love me back, I'd understand. After all, I didn't expect it myself.
But then the words escape from her lips. Hesitant, but, at the same time, certain. My lips curled up into a smile, matching the one formed on hers. We laughed nervously at our revelation. This entire time, we both had ignored our feelings for each, unsure of what we felt.
I grabbed her hand and pulled her in for a hug, never wanting to let go. I placed a kiss on her forehead and wrapped my arms around her again.
He smiled, and I smiled back. He both sat there for a second just thinking.
“Honestly?” I began, “I am not sure.” I said. I was telling the truth. I had only seen love once. I knew my mother loved my father, despite what people said about her marrying him for his money, I saw the way she looked at him. Did I look at Anton that way? I wished she was here, she would know exactly what to say. I smiled, thinking of her. ”I am not sure of anything really.” I said with a slight frown. Did I…dare I say it…love Anton? Did I at least like him more than a friend? Did I want our friendship to become romantic, even if this was possibly our last night together. It was all so confusing.
A bit of sadness seeped into my whirlwind of emotions and thoughts that I was trying so hard to figure out. She didn't know, but to be fair, I didn't either. Well, I knew, or at least I was fairly certain, that I love Dia. But is it love and not simply just caring for her? No. He cared for his sisters (and loved them, of course), but this was different. Dia was different.
I chuckled, a bit sadly. "I don't know either," I admitted, my gaze shifted downward a bit. Why was I suddenly so lost for words? This was just Dia, the girl I met at her training center. My District Partner. My arranged fiancee. Nothing could explain the sudden change in everything. Maybe it wasn't sudden. Maybe it was always there, since day one.
I have to admit it, and I can only deny these thoughts for so long.
He seemed, different. Nervous, or something. ”Are you okay?” I asked, squeezing his hand. He spoke, asking me what I thought of him. I paused, looking at him. What was he hinting at? Did he want to know if I saw him as…more? If this act was not actually an act. I looked down, at our hands. It was so easy for me to just slip my hand into his. To lay my head on his shoulder. At first it felt weird, but now, it was not. Now I felt…comfortable. I looked back up at him.
“No, you are not just my District Partner.” I said, ignoring the cameras, ignoring the fact that everyone in the world was watching us. But what was he? He was my companion. My fiance. My best friend. But what did all of that mean? I swallowed, unsure of everything. ”No, you mean much more to me than that.”
A small smile formed at her last sentence. This was so unlike me, to focus on emotions. Heck, the development of feelings for someone is, in and of itself, foreign to me. I was so accustomed to women fawning over me that I never anticipated falling for someone. The idea of me caring for someone romantically never even occurred to me, not even with Dia when we first met.
But I was stuck in this moment, filled with all these heavy thoughts.
I laughed. ”Well, what about it?” I smiled. ”I mean, it was unexpected, but I guess it grew on me.” I said with a giggle. I stopped to think for a moment, ignoring the cameras. How did I feel about it. If these were not the circumstances, if we were back home, would I have married Anton? Well I mean, I guess I would have had to, but would I have cared about him like I do now? ”I think…I think that we are both lucky, and unlucky at the same time.” I said. ”Lucky, because the arena brought us closer than I ever thought we would be, but of course…unlucky, because soon, it will all end.” I said with a slight frown.
I nodded at her comments. They were all so direct and professional, just like I am. Or used to be, at least with her. Everything used to be a deal where I had to negotiate, and often times win, businesses. Our engagement was no different, and yet it's completely different. Her replies weren't what I wanted because a small part of me was a bit disappointed by her answers. But why did they bother me?
It finally dawned on me. I cared for Dia. Not just as a District Partner, but as much more. I think I love her.
"So," I said, clearing my throat. "That's all? Nothing more? Do you see me just as your District Parnter?"
