Robert Rauschenberg

Robert Rauschenberg was an american painter and graphic artist whose early works is credited for inspiring the pop art movement. At 18, Raushcenberg started studying pharmacokogy but he dropped out shortly after due to the difficulty of the course, he was then drafted into the Navy until his discharge in 1945/1946. After his time in the Navy, he went straight into studying at the Kansas City Art Institute and at the Académie Julian in Paris, France.

I already knew of Rauschenberg through his ‘combines’, this is a term he invented himself to describe a series of works that combine different aspects of painting and sculpture together. Through the invention and creation of this series, he built a new significance around ordinary objects by placing them in the context of art.

His combines in particular inspire me as he showed that art can be defined as and made from anything, you dont have to make perfect, realistic paintings all the time to be considered an amazing artist. I have always struggled with this idea and aimed for hyper realism however studying Rauschenberg and his work has made me realise all art is good art. Taking some abstract influence from his work could help me develop my own pieces and learn to be more carefree when creating art in the future.
