Fenris in any other media would have been portrayed as like, broken and crying and vulnerably emotional. Or otherwise just angry all the time.

And yeah, he is broody and prickly and angry all the time. But!

He is also really, really funny?

In this sort of bone-dry way. He's maybe the most smartly funny guy in the whole game, perhaps next to Hawke when the game lets you be.

Fenris is so understated in his lightning-quick humor it's almost easy to miss. And because he's a prickly asshole, and a funny one, you think it would be easy to miss that he is a victim in every single moment he's onscreen. A victim of horrors most people couldn't or wouldn't want to imagine. But he doesn't forget it, and therefore neither do you.

And yet the game never loses sight of the fact that he's also just some guy
