The Making of Doctor Strange Pt. 1
I wrote this out as one whole post and it was gigantic, so I decided to divide it up into 4 posts. I’ll link those here when they go up.
Doctor Strange (the classic comic version) wears basically a long tunic and tights. So I figured I’d just lengthen the tunic into a dress and, well, wear tights.
I started this the same way I did my Star Trek Uniform; with my favorite Old Navy knit dress as a pattern. I left the sleeves off because I wanted a different sleeve.
This was much simpler, though, because I wasn’t doing any complicated seams. Just a plain, straight, dress in a comfortable medium-weight jersey.
Once I got it cut, I had to figure out the applique. I really tried, but I cannot for the life of me figure out if the symbol(s) on his chest had a name. (I say “symbols” because like most comic characters, he’s had 50 different costume revisions over time.) Absent a name for the … bat-cross-thing, I had to draw it myself from whatever pictures I could find. I’m terrible at copying a drawing, but I think my second try came out pretty nice.
Pressed onto the heat-bond:
I meant to buy the kind of heat-bond that didn’t require sewing, but as you can see I somehow grabbed the wrong one, so I ended up zigzag stitching it around.
Once I had that done, the next step was sleeves. Strange’s sleeves are pretty billowy so I figured I was looking at a bishop sleeve. And I remembered having a pattern that had a similar sleeve in it, so I dug it out and discovered that at some point, I’d recut the pattern into a straight sleeve. Derp.
Fortunately, the internet is a thing so I used this tutorial to re-draft my now-straight sleeve back into a bishop style.
Gathering the wrists and adding the cuff:
They’re a bit long, but that just makes them puff more when the cuff is at my wrist.
Now that neck binding … did not at all come out the way I wanted it. I was NOT going for a wide boatneck. But it turned out for the best in the end, and when I get to the cloak it will be clear why.
