Day 30 of Knowvember!
Did you know butterflies can taste with their feet?
They have chemoreceptors on them that let them know if a leaf is suitable for laying their eggs
It can also help them sense nectar to eat when they land on flowers!

The Eiffel Tower was originally meant for Barcelona
However, they rejected it because it was too ugly and did not fit their aesthetic vision and financial grounds that it would not attract tourists.

Did you know ants don't have lungs?
Oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in and out through tiny openings on the sides of their bodies
Internally, they have little air tubes branching out to all parts of their body.

Did you know an ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain?
They also have the largest eye of any living mammal at around 5 cm in diameter
In contrast, their brains are about the size of a walnut!
Really adds some weight to calling someone birdbrain

A single strand/noodle of spaghetti is called a spaghetto.
But wait! There's more!
A single piece of ravioli is called a raviolo
A single cannoli is called a cannolo
A single gnocchi is called gnocco
That's italian for you!

Around the time of the French Revolution, most of the people didn't even speak French
Only 12-13% spoke it fairly well
Rather, the majority spoke in other Langues d'oïl and regional languages, such as Occitan, Breton, Basque, etc

There's a type of volcanic rock that can actually float on water
It's called Pumice and is filled with gas bubbles, making it light enough to be able to float
Some rafts made by Pumice can even travel across oceans carried by currents!

Did you know the average cumulus cloud weighs more than 70 adult T-Rexes?
T-Rexes are estimated to have weighed around 5,000-7,000 kg (11,000-15,500 lbs)
Cumulus clouds weigh up to 500,000 kg (1.1 million lbs or ~550 tonnes)

A South African railway once employed a baboon
His name was Jack and he was hired as an assistant to a disabled railway signalman and was "trained to such perfection" that he never made a single mistake!
He was also paid 20 cents per day and half a bottle of beer per week

A pig in France not only got executed, but was put on trial for murder
In 1386 a pig attacked a child who later died from the wounds
The pig was
arrested
imprisoned
sent to court
stood on trial for murder
declared guilty
executed
by hanging!

Did you know there are a type of bacteria that are magnetic?
They're called magnetotactic bacteria, a group of polypheletic bacteria that orient themselves along the lines of Earth's magnetic field!
Their magnetoresponsve capability is called "magnetotaxis" or "microbial magnetoreception"

The biggest piece of dinosaur feces is over 30 cm long and more than 2 litres in volume
This was believed to be a T-rex turd and it helped scientists get a better idea of what they ate
Fossilised dung is also called 'coprolite'

Giraffes are 30x more likely to be struck by lightning than humans
There have only been 5 documented incidents between 1996 and 2010 but since their population was 140,000, it calculated to 0.003 deaths via lightning strikes per 1,000 giraffes.
This ends up being 30x the lightning fatality rate for humans!

Did you know the moon had active volcanoes when dinosaurs were still around?
Chinese researchers have found that it was volcanically active just 125 million years ago
They found samples of glass beads with volcanic origin determined by their chemical composition and sulfur isotopes.

Blue whales are so ginormous a human baby could swim through its veins.
Their hearts are about the size of a small golf cart and can weigh up to 181 kg (~400 lbs) !

Australia is almost 4000 km wide
But the moon is only about 3400 km wide!
