Late April, 2024 Gwen rubbed forcibly at her temples, as if the physical pressure would flatten out the mounting headache. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t work — not when the secure message from Makhaira remained unchanged no matter how many times she read it. It was… a very weird message, to say the least. What the hell had Makhaira so freaked out that she was sending a secure message without any details, just an offer to either send another secure message with actual information… or put together a secure call. Hrm. Gwen really didn’t want to talk to Makhaira at all, but she was morbidly curious what would have the woman so concerned. Unless she was faking her out to talk about something else? Even so, Gwen was convinced these days that Makhaira was mostly just annoying — she didn’t have any real power in the Espionage family. It wouldn’t hurt to find out more, and it might as well be in a forum where she could ask questions. A call it was. If Makhaira was faking her out to get her on the line, she’d just ignore any similar attempts from the woman in the future. It would be even easier to do that once she filed for divorce, assuming that action would be just as small of a blip on the Espionage family radar as the impression Makhaira had given her. At this point she had to assume it would be fine, since until this message she hadn’t heard a peep from the Espionages since she’d dropped out of piracy entirely. ***
Late April, 2024 (but a different day from the other part shhh calendars are hard) Gwen felt another headache coming on as she disconnected the line with Makhaira. She should have filed for divorce earlier. If she did anything now, after finding out about Mark’s arrest… she could get it through, she was sure, but it wouldn’t look good for him. She wasn’t in love with him, and never had been. But he was her friend, and one of few people she’d trusted in any capacity during the darkest part of her life. If she divorced him now, someone judging the situation from the outside could easily assume she was doing so because she considered him guilty of the crime he’d been arrested for. Which… he was guilty, yes — but to Makhaira’s point, being arrested for Earth media piracy was absurd. Even if she were to think about this from an entirely selfish perspective, she was sure getting divorced wouldn’t stop the galx from calling her as a character witness whenever this trial did happen - she’d been Mark’s wife for years now, after all. Ugh, this was such a headache.
Did the Prosperity know? Makhaira hadn’t been certain. Even if they did somehow know, it was doubtful they knew where the Bat Ray crew were being detained. And even if they knew that, odds of the Prosperity having enough detail to be able to send messages to or visit with the Bat Ray’s crew were pretty slim. Whether they would want to do anything with that information if they had it, Gwen had no idea — but there were enough connections there that she was certain that they would at the very least want to know what happened to the Bat Ray. And she wasn’t heartless, so. With a heavy sigh, she got out her tablet and began drafting a secure message to send to Daphne.
