This ep is an homage to Big Night (1996) & to food. Maybe I can get @andrewcotto to write the script or develop the characters. The film Big Night was shot in #KeyportNJ on the #JerseyShore. . . The Arcuri brothers were bankrupt after their small boutique Irestaurant on the Jersey Shore failed. They were from Calabria, coming to NJ in 2000 after being perplexed, repulsed, & fascinated with the early Sopranos. One brother was a culinary genius, while the other handled the business side…and was very protective of his brother. The President of the College loved their restaurant & was frustrated with the contract with #Sodexo. So, the President decided to give the Arcuris the foodservice contract, which was a bit of a leap of faith. . Recent reports came out that student meals at @wellesleycollege averaged out to $12 with a mandatory dining plan. While upscale and full of choices, the President thought the Arcuris could do better. . The College had several cafés, a pub, and an automat throughout its various buildings. The offerings were mediocre & the students were clamoring for Starbucks that would take their meal plans & a revamping of the dining hall that served up vats of institutional food. Landing the contract was easy compared to executing on a scale they weren’t prepared for. They felt over their heads. The brothers started to bicker… . “Look. I’m not going to argue about this. We need to come up with menus under budget, perfect them, & be ready by September.” . “What the f*ck is this? What is this vee-gan? What is this gluten free? These kids. “Woodpoint & Frost” “chop suey” . . I forgot that I lived in the gritty part of Greenpoint BK for a hot minute in 2012. I only realized it recently after taking the G after a show at @brooklynsteel in East Williamsburg & waking by my old street (N. Henry). #HoMayKitchen reminds me of #EdwardHopper’s #ChopSuey (1929) w/more muted colors. That Hopper piece reminds me of something I find useful in writing & set design/conceptualization. The use of negative & un-detailed space forces one to focus on the details. I have a penchant for oversaturation, in terms of both story & setting. . . I’m envisioning replicas of these furnishings adapted for a college/university setting for the @winterwick.college sets. Pervasive through the college interiors & architecture is a quirky aesthetic informed by both mid- & (gasp) ¾-century design. . . I can’t help but think of sets & locations as I’m conceptualizing scripts & scenes. Setting is always a character, likely stemming from my love of #filmnoir & #frenchnewwave. Several office meeting scenes I’ve written are in spaces that are intentionally claustrophobic with cramped rooms & low ceilings. The metaphor is a crowded boat that a bunch of bickering people are stuck on. “Dundonald Brightside” 📺✍️🖤🔒🖤 . . #TVConcept #scriptidea #showbible #Winterwick @winterwick.college . . This ep is a challenge as its about the sad genesis of self emasculation. This is based on someone I barely know, but haven’t seen in about a decade…a tragic codependent figure who gives up all agency in order to not be alone. The narcissism stems from perceived failures & inadequacies. It would be interesting for #ScottMechlowicz to play Don & Matt Damon to reprise cuckolding his character (Eurotrip). . Don (Dundonald) was a cog in the College’s finance dept, perfectly content doing mundane analyses. There were limited opps & the more ambitious would move on after getting experience. While Don wasn’t stupid, his nickname was Dunce to the younger staff. . There was nothing memorable about Don. One would be hard pressed to recall anything about him, other than a dad joke or the occasional off-color remark. . . Don’s first marriage disintegrated abruptly. His second wife was the result of a rebound relationship borne out of desperation...known chiefly for her inappropriate attire & baking strange gluten free olive oil cakes. Don’s choices made it clear he sought out a specific personality type: domineering w/a bit of a mean streak, resembling his paternal grandmother. He no longer had friends from his past & he rarely interacted w/his kids, siblings, or parents. His social life was on lockdown. . As cracks in Don’s 2nd marriage appeared, he would get belittled about how his first wife cuckolded him by banging his buddies on his basketball team in Yorktown, as well as having an affair w/a respected figure in their church. Not one of his friends bothered to tell him. It’s easy to shrug off the plight of the living embodiment of a styrofoam rice cake. . “Listen, Donny. You’ll tow the line like you always do. W/out me, you’d go back to being the sniveling little boy I found, heartbroken & jerking off to some sunburned slag who you thought loved you.” . . “family tree” 📺✍️👨‍👧? . . #TVConcept #scriptidea #showbible #Winterwick. . Taylor never thought about her biological dad. Maybe it was because she was so much like her mom that it seemed as if any of her father’s genetic material never had a shot, as if it were scared away. . Her stepdad (Michael) died suddenly on a hike near Breckenridge. It was a freak accident, where a friend lost their footing and sent him down a steep ravine where he hit his head. Michael treated Taylor like his own daughter & she never gave her biological dad any thought…until Michael died. . What started as a curiosity turned into a bit of an obsession. Her mom knew nothing of what happened to her dad. It didn’t take much sleuthing to find him given genealogical & genomic databases. He was living in the West Village in a dingy apartment in a building that was part of an inheritance. . Taylor, a photography MFA, took to spying on her dad & taking photos of him. She found out he was overweight, reclusive, and constantly had bluetooth headsets on. He hadn’t had a regular job since 2007 or so when he started getting inheritances & became a full time ne’er do well. He frequented a bodega & a bakery for coffee w/Stevia & soy. They shared a love of the same junk foods. She asked the bakery owner about him: . . “Oh, that guy. Strange man. Says many odd things. He sniffs the air & makes odd comments to the women. Very particular about his coffee. I yell at him when he buys too much that is bad for him. I am not a murderer! . Girlie. Ha ha! You stir coffee just like him. Three swirls. Two taps. Cedar sticks at angle on the napkin.” . . Taylor felt she needed to stay away, believing she needed to maintain her boundaries. She used the photos of her dad for an exhibit (preserving his anonymity to a certain point), but never returned to her his street. . . Hayley’s roommate was intrigued by all of this & didn’t mind her camming, despite all of the lighting, props, & costumes crammed into @thecontainerstore boxes & on hooks on the brick wall of the dorm. . Haley’s mother, on the other hand, a second wave feminist, grew pale when she realized her daughter was camming for ‘weirdos’ on the Internet, albeit in a PG-13 to R fashion. Mostly. Haley’s dad, a self-proclaimed liberal progressive who thought about voting for #BernieSanders in the 2016 Pennsylvania primaries, was staunchly against any such activities & everyone in the know kept him in the dark to prevent his head from exploding. . Haley would get into heated arguments with her mom about agency, exploitation, & #LateCapitalism. When it came right down to it, Haley loved the dramaturgy of it all. The choreography of her movements, the Spotify playlist in the background, & the feel of the fabric of her costumes & lingerie in her skin all put a spell on her. She deeply felt the Christina character in #AtomEgoyan’s Exotica, which foreshadowed or imprinted her complex relationship with the sexual sphere, the obsessive male gaze, & everyone’s tangled emotions perpetually seeking a soothing salve. . . Simone wasn’t looking forward to her humanities course, but it proved to be quite the foil to Professor Lorne’s Journalistic Writing class. The latter was a crash course in a neoliberal fauxconomics worldview stuck in 1989, while the history & philosophy of the 20c course was brought to life by a recent Columbia grad (Professor Allie) who broke down the complexities in pop & Internet culture terms. . . Simone, as a GenZer, became interested in Frantz Fanon after seeing a recent film depicting some of his views as controversial & with the encouragement of Professor Allie. . “Fanon shouldn’t be controversial. Neither should punching Nazis. Old Professor Lorne doesn’t get it, but he’s a free speech grifter. Resistance isn’t a call for violence, but is an intolerance, yes, INtolerance of oppression. I’ll leave such tolerance for the centrists.” . Some of Simone’s friends were concerned about this newfound rebellious streak. Concerned that she would be going from pink pussy hats to Antifa. Professor Sarah was always a star at the College. While her doctorate was in Italian literature, but was adaptable & shifted her research to media, TV, & film. Sarah was also down to earth w/ a cool demeanor. Her husband, Professor Jack, was a bit of a neurotic mess. Handsome, but insecure in that way where things start off fine, but devolve into trainwreck theatre. Jack was a Lit prof was demoted due to his lack of scholarship. His perfectionism reduced him to chronic writers block. . . They now had an open marriage, but this was mainly due to Jack’s pleas. He “needed” to be free to explore some dark psychosexual things, but wanted to remain committed to the marriage. He wanted a loving marriage during the week, but a secretive relp w/a woman in #ParkSlope who was emotionally abusive & financially draining. During the week, he took care of many of the mundane tasks around the house & actually tried to be a loving husband. He was a neurotic mess by Friday when he’d take a Q train to #Brooklyn. He’d return on Mondays eerily like a blank slate. . . Sarah realized that her relp w/Jack had devolved slowly over time & realized how crazy it was. . . “It just got so normalized. Out in San Francisco. Everyone was poly & ‘The Ethical Slut’ was required reading in cosmopolitan circles. I never thought that maybe I don’t want this, but for years I was getting what I wanted & nothing was flaunted or waved in my face.” . . She thought it was because she was so adaptable, but she was smart enough to know better. The “arrangement” started to take an even darker turn & at the same time she met someone (not a man) who made her pulse quicken. She now rethought her compartmentalized relationships & how different people meant diff things in her life. . Lecturer Mara Williams thought she would hold court w/the GenZ students during her 2 year Creative Writing appointment. One of the darlings of the faded Brooklyn #AltLit scene, she thought it would be a cakewalk getting a new generation to appreciate autofiction & confessional storytelling. . The students seemed bored. Most of the students just sat quietly during the class discussions, until the foreign exchange students started to earnestly ask Mara questions. . Mireille, a Parisian exchange student posed the question: . “I see in your work all of this...quotidienne. This everyday experience with the bars of Xanax & the Molly, but you are clearly pulling the puppet strings on which everyday we’re allowed to ‘see.’ Your novel is your #Künstlerroman, no? Very much 2009. What are you working on now? Surrealism? That could be interesting.” . Mara’s immediate reaction was to get defensive, but instead she smiled & brushed off Mirelle’s questions by posing another to the class. . . Zhi, a Singaporean student was less patient: . “I understand the industry, no, enterprise of these works & the narrative frame that surrounds the autobiographical. I do not think any of this “alt-lit” is well executed. It is like the soccer player or the ice sport, yes, hockey, when the player shows off his fancy footwork or stick technique. Do writers of alt/lit want to show intentionally their lacking of self awareness?
