natgeo With @JenniferHayesig An octopus carries a shell as it walks along the sand bottom of Anilao, Philippines. The octopus will carry its mobile shelter where ever it goes until it is stolen by a larger more aggressive octopus. We have watched octopus battles rage for several minutes over a shoe, tin can and empty shells. We recognize and celebrate World Oceans this week. The ocean produces more than half of our oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide. Our health and welfare is inseparable from the sea.

Look at my babies! These are the innards of some eucalypt samples for honours. After boiling them in solution for 12 odd hours, the cuticles are taken off for stomatal & cell undulation analysis and these are left over! It's fantastic. Look at all the wee veins! ((Honours is death can I hire someone to help with lab work??? Draft my lit review?? Anything???)

The exposure of the boundary between the Pacific (upper) and Australian plates, what a cataclastic mess!

The green zone between the mylonite/ultramylonite upper plate and (there were some Keas come to investigate the group of students on the mountain, idk what’s on the Australian plate I wasn’t listening whoops!) the lower is from metamorphosed glass and clay, turned chlorite.

This animation shows a cinemagraph of a breaking wave photographed by Ray Collins. The motion was inferred and digitally added by a second artist, Jersey Maria. The result is hypnotic, as if we are traveling beside the wave and watching it tear apart ever so slowly. The wave seems to be poised on a tipping point, only breaking up along its back edge, when instinct tells us it will keep steepening and tipping forward until its top curl crashes down in a wave of white foam. Surf photography like Collins’ work shows us an alternative perspective on waves, their power frozen into a single instant. Reanimated, it feels like we’re seeing the wave in hyper-slow-motion, watching every tiny movement of water before everything crashes down. !!! One lady in honours with me, she volunteers at the South Australian Museum in the minerals collection.

This week she organised a tour through the thousands of specimens not on display and oh my, do they have some fancy things!

These were the best things I saw. The Virgin Rainbow herself 😍 said to be the best opal specimen in the world. On the right is a wee meteorite, courtesy of Mars.
