This album doesn't quite capture the magnificence of that night but it is solid listen nonetheless. Hopefully it will be an excuse for them to come back into town because that show was amazing!

R.I.P. Malik Isaac "Phife Dawg" Taylor, 1970-2016

Rumors of the passing of Phife Dawg, from the legendary hip-hop group, A Tribe Called Quest, which started to surface just as I was going to bed last night, were like a baseball bat to the head. Even though it was well known that he was a long time sufferer of type II diabetes and his health was, sadly, up and down at the best of times, 45 is way too young an age to pass.

So here’s my tribute to the mighty mighty one, Mr Maurice White, who sadly passed away on February 4 of this year. He left us an incredible treasure trove of music that has shaped the way I live my life! I avoided the really obvious hits that you can hear everywhere and went for my personal faves, and a solid dose of the music that went on to shape the unique sound of Earth Wind and Fire from his early years working with two great mentors to him, Ramsey Lewis and Charles Stepney. I got so much pleasure recording this - I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

[Audio Stream] Rihanna - ANTI

Pretty sure this is not an officially-sanctioned stream and the Tame Impala cover, "Same Ol' Mistakes", which is amazing BTW, is pitched considerably faster on this Soundcloud player than on the presumably correct version on Tidal. No matter, I like the album even though it's a lttle all over the place. It helps if you have a bit of an alternative hipster sensibilty to your musical tastes. Trad. Top 40/Urban ears, as weird as both of those genres have gotten in recent times, might not appreciate everything she's trying to do on the album. The one thing I will say is her voiice is sounding exceptionally strong throughout. Rihanna is consistently underrated as a vocalist because of the often fluffy material she records but be clear: she makes mincemeat of the two throwback soul cuts near the end of the album.
