I have the headache (slightly worsened by the bear we encountered when I forced my dogs to go for a walk) so y’all are gonna get like the full effect of me lying in bed pondering the things and SO I think you should know:

Sam was actually a lil excited to work out with Mis for the first time like yes! A space in which I KNOW I’m hot shit and competent and sexy yesssssssss this is it boys(London Knights group chat: fuck off Dickie man stfu). So he shows up in an artfully low cut tank and shorts that he KNOWS have just the right amount of print and like, sets up weights for like a press that’s just a lil heavy for his warm up and he’s trying to get the warm up but also yk. Make it look good.

and when he sits up and grins at Misa he just gets the warmest sweetest most approving smile which he ABSOLUTELY CANNOT HANDLE. He’s like, you need me to change these for you? Just cause he needs to chirp SOMETHING or he might get on his knees and start begging. and Misa is like, nah that’s my warm up too, I’m good. Sits down and Sam is like oh. Same lift? Same lift. Same lift even though I‘ve got two inches and fifteen lbs on you. Same lift. Hey Mike is it hot in here? You know you can def take your shirt off around me if you get too hot in here. This lasts for like three weeks and finally Misa is like hey Sam I kinda think you’re not eating enough lean protein? What’s your protein count? And Sam is like my what. Misa is like yeah I think you need to eat more protein.

Internally Sam is like, tell him to fuck off. You’re Sam Dickinson you ain’t changing for no man no matter how cute he is! And what comes of his mouth is, oh yeah what do you recommend Mis. Starts eating more fish chicken and legumes. Makes horrifying eye contact with Toff one day after praccy over their individual servings of the terrifying pea protein vanilla shakes Cat buys for Misa who makes them one each automatically, without even asking them now. There’s a dark sadness in Toff’s eyes Sam recognizes from the mirror. They both chug their chalky sludge with some fellow feeling. Sam’s lifts have gone up 20% and Misa said he was really proud of him so.

Also I just want to say, while the attention is here, that North of North is as important (if not more important) of a show than Heated Rivalry. And if you are just waking up to Canadian shows now, from wherever in the world you are, please consider watching it. It's on Netflix. It's stunningly beautiful, fiercely and unapologetically Inuit, and such important storytelling for Turtle Island (the land we colonially call Canada).

After approx two years of being friends with Prometheus the Great Dane, I asked his human being for her number so we could maybe have planned walks instead of just running into each other. Two years. No idea what her partners name is but I thought her name was Katie. Two years.

Where’s the post about the ao3 writer who’s written like one story for your fandom and 28 for hockey rpf? I aspire to become that but literally for hrpf fans, like one novel length Willmack fic to draw you in, ten shorts about sharks ensemble fluff slowly becoming samisa based, and then I’m going to write like forty Laila Edwards pieces where she’s a rockstar and a space pirate and eventually yes probably a professional hockey player and then like anexploration of Denver Barkey’s mommy kink re: Trevor Zegras.

my high school english teacher would often critique our literature analysis work by pointing out: "you're treating these characters like they're real people. They're not. They're characters". And it took me a long time to understand what he meant by that. Because I always thought "isn't that the point? That writers want to write characters to be so three dimensional that they act and feel like real people?" but that's not it.

Characters are tools a writer uses in service of a story. Of course characters can be written with depth to the point they feel real to us, but they exist in service of their narrative. Something real people aren't beholden to at all. When discussing characters, I think it's easy to accidentally see these characters as "real people" and not extensions of the author's beliefs. Tools for a narrative. Means of storytelling.

what's funny to me is that Sam clearly comes from a family of all extroverts. his mother is proud to have gone digging and found his yearbook picture where he says he does not want to play for the leafs. at his homecoming game there were 150 people. who even knows 150 people??

Sam Dickinson is a ‘whatever you say gorgeous’ boyfriend and he hates it and it’s never happened to him before but Misa looks at him with big brown eyes and is like, please can you try harder to get along with Ty? Sam can’t even be like TOFF IS THE PROBLEM HERE HE IS OUT TO GET ME he can’t he can’t do it. Instead his voice drops an octave which is even more pathetic than Smitty dropping his voice for Mack and he’s like sure absolutely no problem beautiful Toff is behind Misa making disgusted faces. Willmack is behind him, actively laughing, which is fucking rich coming from those two. But Misa is doing that thing where he tips his head down and looks up through his lashes and his smile curls just a little bit on the left, the most kissable side, so Sam doesn’t, actually, care.
