Meet Bridget!

1. Favorite Hobby: Probably skiing or playing volleyball.

2. College and why architecture: I go to Catholic University down in D.C. I was never that kid building cities out of lego's or anything, I have just sort of always been into design and art. I took a ton of painting and art classes in high school and always wanted to help my parents whenever they were redecorating/renovating our house. To me, architecture was a field in which I could continue with somewhat of a creative outlet while doing something with a greater and more significant purpose.

3. Favorite Architect, Designer, or Artist: My favorite architect is Carlo Scarpa. I saw a lot of his projects when I was in Italy this past semester, and his attention to detail and material is so meticulous and unlike anything I had ever really been exposed to before. He had such a unique quality about the way he designed. I'm also very inspired by Tom Ford. He ended up as a fashion designer but actually studied architecture in school- it's very interesting to me to see that architecture has the potential to set you up for really any design-based career dreams you might have.

4. Star Wars or Star Trek: I've never seen Star Trek but I'm going to guess that it cannot beat out Star Wars.

Meet Jonah!

I am a senior at Highland Park High School who is currently enrolled in the WISE program. WISE stands for Wise Individualized Senior Experience, which is a senior-only year long course designed for each student to research a field that they are interested in. Another component of the course is to complete a project. For my project, I chose to study architecture, which has been a serious interest of mine for a long time and I am pursuing it next year in college. My specific interest within architecture is stadium architecture. For this project, my hope is to understand the design process from initial renderings to everyday function after a building opens.

Name: Anusha Nagar

School: Middlesex County Academy (part of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School District)

Potential College: School of Architecture at Princeton University

Grade: Going into 10th grade in September

Why Engineering?

My high school focuses on engineering as a vocation. After spending half a semester learning Electrical/Computer engineering and then half a semester learning Civil/Mechanical engineering, we were asked to pick between the two courses and we would continue in our chosen “major” for the next three and a half years. Before the start of my freshmen year, I already had a passion for architecture and civil engineering from a few projects in which we were asked to plan out a house and build it. To complete the project, I spent many hours playing around with online tools that would allow me to draw out floor plans fairly easily. I really enjoyed the planning out phase of the project, and began to design small structures (such as homes) in my free time. Although they were nothing too elaborate, I felt as if I had found my true calling by sketching them out. When it came to picking between the two engineering courses, I didn’t have to think twice, and decided to continue in civil/mechanical Engineering as it was very interesting to me and close to architecture. From choosing this, I have learned more about structures along with skills such as dimensioning that are vital to both an engineer and an architect.

What do you hope to gain from Internship.

I contacted DIGroupArchitecture in the hopes that I could gain more knowledge about the field of architecture, find out more things I could do in order to excel in this field, along with find out if I really did want to become an architect. So far, as it has only been a day in, I have found out more about what an architect may do all day, as well as the things they must be proficient in. On top of all of this, I have gained more excitement for entering the field of architecture, which continues in proving that I do, in fact, want to be an architect when I grow up.

Meet the intern.

Observing and drawing the surrounding environment has always been a hobby of mine. My decision to study architecture was based on my love for creativity and making a difference in the way one interacts with space. I am looking forward to graduating next year, and beginning a career in which I am continuously learning.

Weekend Watch: with Matt Sweeney

Matthew Sweeney if you design it, he will detail it

What aspects of architectural design do you appreciate most? I admire simple designs and, hands down, DETAILS! You can have an astonishing design but lack the detailing to accurately execute that design.

Who accomplishes this successfully? The one architect, for me, that stands out is Mies. He was quoted saying “Less is More” and “God is in the details”. For example, look at the Barcelona Pavilion; it is a simplistic modern design, and it has been detailed from the overall form down to the bookending of stone, the custom columns, and even the furniture!

Can you further discuss your fascination with detailing? Once I graduated college and started working, design became realistic and no longer theoretical. Its one thing to be able to “put together a building” but to understand all the facets of the design and to incorporate the design through all architectural aspects is what achieves a holistic project. There are so many ways to achieve a holistic project through detailing. From the overall building to the smallest feature, detailing is often overlooked unfortunately

What DIG project(s) have you worked on that the details were well implemented? The Patient Arrival Pavilion at JFK Medical Center. The light fixtures float off the ceiling and correspond to the floor pattern; the millwork is simple, elegant, and responds to the building’s form; the color-changing wall acts like a beacon for the facility – you can see it glowing at night. That entire volume is lit with one row of LEDs at the bottom, which is hidden by the glass frame. The wall behind the glass gently bows away to allow the light to evenly graze the wall. You should have seen the design team mocking this up in the back room!
