i saw a tweet a long time ago from a japanese fan that pointed out something about the names in witch hat atelier that i thought was interesting. for most of the character’s names, there is a repeated kana (japanese syllable sound) in their names, though there are a few exceptions.
note that this naming rule mainly applies only in japanese, as translations to other languages change the spelling of characters’ names. also this is gonna list all named characters (as far as i can remember) up to chapter 40, though we have a few new characters in recent chapters that also follow the rule but i’m not including them to prevent spoilers.
this is a looooong post so hang on to your witch hat folks
From my Hanamusa AU! A lot of people wanted a Jessie and Ash heart to heart. Extended dialogue under the cut!
Jessie: Listen, I know this is weird for both of us. I wasn't trying to fall in love with your mom.
Ash: Ugh you're making it weirder-
Jessie: I KNOW I DIDN'T LIKE HOW THAT SOUNDED BUT PLEASE LISTEN. I know you still don't trust me either and that's understandable. I was a massively successful, evil villainess after all
Ash: That doesn't help your case
Jessie: But that's behind me now. And I promise, I would never do anything to hurt Delia.
Ash: ...I get it. Mom deserves someone to be there for her. Must be lonely here since I started my journey.
Jessie: You could stand to come visit her more. I'm sure she'd appreciate it.
Ash: She does seem happy. And that's all that matters to me.
Jessie: You're a good twerp, kid– I mean, a good kid, Ash.
Ash: Y'know, you seem happy too!
Jessie: W-well of course I am! It's... nice. To be a part of a family. I care about Delia a lot, and I care about you too. Especially after all this time.
Ash: Thanks, Dad
Jessie: DAD??? Oh god I'm gonna puke.
Ash: Mom's already "mom"! You can't be mom too!
Jessie: I do NOT wanna open the can of Orthworms that comes with being your father.
Ash: Fine, what about "Mother"?
Jessie: NOPE!
Ash: "Ma"?
Jessie: BAD!
Ash: "Mum"?
Jessie: WORSE! Please just call me Jessie, this conversation is over!!!
I like Witch Hat Atelier a lot bc it's core theme centers people and their betterment (whether it be yourself or others; there's no distinction on which is more important, the prosperity of one ensures the happiness of the other) and it makes all the little "life lessons" sprinkled in-between that much more meaningful
Like all the questions, and their answers— "What can I do to help?" "What can I do to become a better version of myself?" "If I do this, how will this affect everyone else?" "Why am I barred from doing [X]? Who built the barrier?"— wrapped up in this medieval, magical setting, are imbued with a love of humanity and a very good understanding of it. Because the story wants better for people, but knows we are our own obstacle for becoming better, and looks for realistic solutions for us to overcome those self-made obstacles.
