@silver-griffincat 's fandom blog, kinda. i always forget to post here, in part 'cause it's embarrasing to hyperfixate on things publically.
multifandom, check pinned post for details.
my name (generally speaking) is silver, beryl or felis work too. who i am gets complicated, but feel free to ask about it (otherkin, queer, and a median system). they/thee/any pronouns. please adress as a creature.
this is meant to be a place for shenanigans, art, and if i ever manage that, collaborative storytelling. in which case, it would somewhat work as an ask blog. mostly the usual rules, i'll specify when not.
harmless, sfw asks are welcome regardless of relevancy. i choose what i reply to. you can also show me your own characters anytime.
-if you want to see more of me, ask away. give me something to interact with.
fandoms: splatoon, steven universe, rain world, hollow knight, animator vs animation, minecraft, green lantern.. undertale/deltarune maybe? (please don't involve me in undertale discourse, i beg).
please be patient. i'm weird, anxious, traumatized, frail, and may make dumb mistakes. but am trying my best.
How come Lapis and Peridot have a genuinely interesting dynamic, with unique personalities, that should all carry over beautifully into shipping, and then such a large portion of the fics and other art about them are just... This.
(I know I'm planting a bomb with this one, hear me out.)
Two questions. First, any recommendations for longer fics where they're the focus and in character (and ideally not written as recolored humans with powers)? And secondly, WHY. I know Lapis is powerful and Peridot is small, but when we see them just hanging out, it barely plays into their dynamic at all.
(Ramble about some agressively ignored character traits under cut.)
There's a lot to unpack, but the first thing that comes to mind is that Lapis doesn't want to be dominant and controlling. She did it to keep Malachite chained, and for some degree of catharsis against Jasper, but that, and the other times she was making decisions out of pure stress and desparation, don't reflect who she'd be outside of it, and neither does the time she was cold and abrasive out of being depressed.
Lapis, when she feels safe, is sincere, soft-spoken, likes to joke around (even if she's not fully aware of what is or isn't a serious topic) and indulges in what people are doing, even when it doesn't make much sense to her. At her happiest, we see her being excitable and louder, but still mostly gentle. And we know that she values this. "That was weakness! Restraint takes strength. Patience takes strenght." She spells it out for us.
And when under that much stress, she's not a steady character at baseline. She can force it and be brave, but her appearance and the nature of her powers illustrate it well: she's strong, but not in body, and when she doesn't override it, her first instinct is to flee. She knows she's fragile, and the fear of being trapped takes time to actually overcome, instead of acting to spite it, or feeding it.
It's really impressive how far she came from her lowest point, to deciding to fight the Diamonds. Had to have figured something out back there in space.
..
They can both put on a brave face when terrified, but Peridot is much more reliable at it, if less conventional. She can be hunted down by people who, for all she knows, want her dead, but still laugh at them. It took complete certainty that the world was about to end with her on it to get her to stop acting entirely, in front of someone who wasn't a threat. She's dedicated.
Much of her overconfidence and over-the-top expressions are deflection. She's genuinely proud, and often thinks she knows more than she does, but a lot of it, and some of the silliness, are to avoid vulnerability. When she can control how she's viewed, she's not fully helpless (no matter how pathetic she is otherwise). It's why she reacts so differently when the threat is from someone she's shown the real her (Steven and Lapis).
That, and she's from a world where she needed control of when she was and wasn't taken seriously, to survive, and it's obvious how much it scares her when it fails. Watching her adapt to earth is fascinating, since she's truly and unashamedly weird, and smart, but it gets muddy between that and her usual act, with a whole grandient on how open she is or isn't being.
We get to see her become more considerate and openly passionate, and challenge herself despite the fear. Learn ways to get by without everything that was taken from her, help save the world, and get her distance from, before befriending, people who treated her poorly (main crystal gems beside steven), even when it wasn't well handled.
-Lapis and Peridot met in between all that, and still (mostly) earned each other's trust, became besties, and built a life together (that they then had to rebuild because of lapis, but while that happened offscreen, they evidently made it work again.) There's a lot of good stuff there. A lot that could affect a romance between them. But no, let's ignore all that and invest in the most stereotypically straight, and often gross dynamic instead. And forget that Peri goes up to Lapis's shoulders, not counting the hair. She's not a baby. Maybe even be generous and forget that the barn got broken over Blue's head, if it's set after that.
This person grinded out a whole lars of the stars trailer in like. A week. It was awesome to see their progress in my server. Super impressive stuff. Go give it a watch!
it's about time people found out what exactly i've been into. hey @azvertigo, here's the larimars for you, and viridian of course. took a bit from little larimar's first design in change your mind with the dark eyes and ice crowns, as well.
I've been really nostalgic for Steven Universe lately, and I have so much love and appreciation for the show I grew up with, so I thought I should make something nice to sort of give back, y'know? Anyways, I hope you enjoy. <3
So in the previous comic I mentioned that Ghost can equip Hornet's mementos like charms, and gains new skills:
Grey Memento: Increases their nail length, while nail arts now do Pocket Sand. Synergizes with Longnail and Mark of Pride to turn their nail into a Final Fantasy weapon.
Surface Memento: Significantly increases their jump and double jump distance. (They use it to express their clinginess for their sister.)
Hero's Memento: Hornet doesn't let them play with it, so we may never know.
Guardian's Memento: Pollen AOE attack similar to Spore Shroom; however, activates with Abyss Shriek rather than Focus (a la Nyleth's Pollen Shriek). Might also let them talk to flowers?
Hunter's Memento: Covers them in a thin layer of slime that prevents grappling from enemies like Muckroaches. Synergizes to create a new Shape of Unn variant which also moves faster than the default. (Also instills them with the Cain Instinct, RIP Lace.)
Sprintmaster Memento: Increases movement speed nearly identically to the Sprintmaster Charm. Synergizes with the Sprintmaster and Dashmaster Charms for a quick getaway from an irate sister.
Craw Memento: No magical effect, but grants them impunity when committing Bird Crimes. (They disappear for 36 hours, and reemerge the newly crowned King of Craws. Hornet is concerned they did a coup, but they're not telling.)

¨Rose gave up her gem form to become Steven because she didn't love Pearl enough¨ What a twisted way of misunderstanding how the mind of a person who is partially suicidal/wants to disappear works
When someone has these type of thoughts, it can come from feeling like you are a burden to everyone around you or that you are a terrible person, and that's likely how Rose saw herself, that she was terrible and couldn't change so she thought giving up her form to someone who would an easier time changing was one of the best decisions she could do.
It doesn't matter how much Rose loved people around her if she still struggled a lot with these thoughts. She was still self destructive and most of the time wanted to avoid talking about her past, so there were certain things she probably never fully came in terms with, which i don't fully blame her since at times she didn't know any better.
In fact, it can come from thinking if you disappear, you are making a favor to your loved ones, something i wouldn't discard that Rose thought about when choosing to make the decision of having Steven.
She thought everyone would be likely better without her, something that was a fatal flaw of hers, not seeing how important she was to people around her.
If anything, Rose underestimated how important she was to Pearl and how she was everything for Pearl, not because she ¨didn't love Pearl enough¨ but due to how she saw herself- as a terrible person.
I think Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz from Steven Universe is a good example of how people treat abuse survivors, especially if they’re not the ‘ideal victim’, or someone who people don’t support just because they’re not the copy pasted definition of a good person or acting in a way that society doesn’t deem acceptable.
Since I've mentioned the growth of hanasei a few times, I might as well post their growth chart now too:
a. The egg stages. The embryo develops pretty fast, so the pictures here would be from a 2-week time span. Their eggs are gelatinous, and are quite annoying to break through — larva release a chemical through their skin to break it down and eclode.
b. Early larva, the first month after eclosion. They look like most larva of the Order hanasei are a member of at this point, and can only be recognized by their size and unusual colors.
c. Mid larva, this being the second and third months respectively. The crown is starting to build up, and their legs are appearing.
d. Late larva, though most just start calling them kids at this point. At 4 months old, this is when hanasei change the most: their nostrils finally open, with developed enough lungs to breathe on land, arms start to sprout, and their gait becomes bipedal. Not only that, but their brains start to develop faster, and they can learn from adults and the world around them, instead of relying on instinct. Age counting starts from here — this kid is 0 years old.
e. A young kid, around 10 years old. Their body has developed enough that they look like a small adult, save for their horns who are still in the process of growing. They're being schooled and in the process of building their own social bubbles with friends and peers. Hanasei take a long time to develop socially, rewiring their brains from solitary larva to communal sophonts, and social bubbles are extremely important for that development.
