The Medieval Art Of Bookmaking Reclaims Its Place In Modern Craft

aLexLibris is an online shop which crafts medieval style leather journal. These designers have inherited the practice of bookmaking, passed on from generations, and with over 15 years of experience, they have preserved an art form in demise.

The traditional and thick leather bound journals, filled with parchment tempered by time and wisdom, has been enriched with the designer’s interpretation of modern symbolism on an ancient book binding technique. Each element of the series is reminiscent of the antique artistry, including the burnished copper plates, and the wooden and leather panelling that respects the materials being plated and bound into shape, and the entire collection of books offered by the shop celebrates the power of knowledge. The book, as seen through this handcrafted medieval bookmaking art, is the embodiment of millions of years of history, knowledge, storytelling and memories of mankind condensed and allowed to take a definitive form on its own. ¿Qué se emplea para la confección del papel?

En primer término, una pasta que puede presentar distintas constituciones. Es decir, se puede elegir el tipo que se quiera emplear. Una de ellas es la de madera, que a su vez es llamada “mecánica”. Lo que se debe hacer es obtener un producto con impurezas, debido a que la celulosa tiene que ser mezclada con otros de los componentes de la madera misma. Esta clase de pasta es utilizada generalmente cuando se quieren elaborar delgadas hojas de calidad inferior a otras, ya que su consistencia es escasa y además se puede llegar a poner amarilla con el paso del tiempo. La pasta de tonalidad morena, por otra parte, es obtenida gracias al desfibrado de la madera, pero una vez que ésta pasó por el proceso de lavado que elimina las materias que se encuentran incrustadas, al tiempo que facilita el desfibrado. Lo que se logra es una pasta muy resistente cuyas fibras pueden llegar a ser bastante largas. A la misma se la emplea en la confección de cartones, sistemas de embalaje, entre otras cosas. En lo que respecta a la pasta química, ésta es utilizada cuando se quiere conseguir una muy buena calidad, y los pasos primigenios no varían demasiado de los de la pasta mecánica. ¿Cómo se constituye el papel? El papel es un material constituido por una delgada lámina elaborada a partir de pulpa de celulosa, una pasta de fibras vegetales molidas suspendidas en agua, generalmente blanqueada, y posteriormente secada y endurecida, a la que normalmente se le añaden sustancias como polipropileno o polietileno con el fin de proporcionarle características especiales.
