K-Drama Review #3
Aaaaand here's another one! The Lee Dongwook fest continues.
This time the drama is 'Bad and Crazy' !!!
As always, mostly spoiler free, but proceed with caution. Ye have been warned.
Drama: Bad and Crazy
Where I found it: Prime Video
Genre: Crime/Cop drama
1-10 (10 is high) scales:
Fluffy: (how many warm fuzzy feelings?) 4 - some very heart-warming moments amongst family and found family.
Dark: (Creepy factor, were the heebies jeebied?) 4 - there were a few moments, mostly physchological creep rather than horror.
Comedy: 8 - I didn't expect it, but there were some real Brooklyn 99 vibe moments!
Heaviness: (How ‘heavy’ it feels. Does it deal with real life issues, or has someone been turned into a chicken nugget?) 5 - some irl issues that real people have to deal with in the real world. But overall not too heavy. Justice theme but didn't make me feel like there's no hope in the world.
Romance: 3 - Wasn't the main focus of the plot. There was a little and tbh I wanted more but what I got was good. Felt real and messy - suited the drama perfectly.
Bromance: 10 - Oh man. So much! Some excellent male friendships here. Quite pivotal to the plot, actually.
Action: 10 - There's a fight scene in every episode with some pretty neat stunts. Understated but effective. It's mostly LDW getting his ass handed to him in various ways. (Yay for whump enjoyers!)
Tissue score: (How much did it make me cry?) 2 - There were a couple moments that really tugged good on the heartstrings.
Main Plot: 10
B Plot: N/A - I don't think there really was one...everything kind of wove together really well.
Tropes: Corruption and injustice, wealthy preying on the poor, main character is an ass at first, man tries to do the Things by himself when he should call on his friends but he's an idiot so he doesn't, attempts at English are made, crazy shaman lady (how is this trope also in this non-folklore drama lol?), awesome parent figure.
Green Flags: Character growth, good general balance of tone, epic bromance, ladies kicking ass, therapy actually helps the main character and mental health is brought up as an issue that should have less stigma,
Red Flags: 1 singular wrist grab.
Mitigating factors: (Things that mean we can look past the red flags) The wrist grab was a LDW pathetic-wet-cat of a man style so we can let it slide. (What I mean is that it's not done in a controlling way, but a gentle pleading manner)
Notable features: (Actors to look out for in other works or especially cool stuff etc.) I watched some behind the scenes things and honestly how well the actors cared for each other and the stuntmen made the set look like it was a fun and good place to work. Good job team! Why does LDW have such good bromances and romances? My little bi heart can't handle it, please spare me.
Final Thoughts: I didn't know what to expect going into this one, but wanted more LDW in my life and so here we are. I'm really impressed at his acting range. It was so fun seeing him go from the very cool, in charge and collected and powerful Gumiho Yeon, to this absolute wreck of a man trying to climb the social ladder and getting all manner of ass beat. Seriously great. Lee Hui-gyeom could body slam me into the pavement and I'd be happy she noticed me at all. Gyeong-tae is the bestest boi.
I saw some familiar faces amidst the cast too, but am terrible at remembering where I've seen people. Praise the Lord for IMDB :D
