Man, I was listening to Lover of Mine and I'm honestly struck by how much of a Luke and Ashton song it actually is. I mean just from how percussion heavy the instrumentation is. To the lyrics of the song which are incredibly heartfelt and fits them perfectly. Luke's vocals overlaying with Ashton's fucking drums. I feel like that song is actually quite symbolic in its instrumentation. If that makes sense. Honestly, the songs they’ve created tell a very specific story. It's like puzzle pieces.
There's one line in Lover of Mine that makes me think of Lashton all the time; it's "i've seen the red, i've seen the blue". It's probably kind of dumb but i just associate Ashton with red and Luke with blue.
Besides that, the fandom has made such a fuss about it being a Lierra song, that is kinda ruined it for me. But as I said previously, it's not and will never be, the lovey-dovey love song Lierra stans wish for. It's not a sad song neither, but it's about a much more complex and darker story than Lierra could have, in my opinion. Wish is why I agree with you, it could relate to Lashton.
The way it's about forgiving your partner's mistakes and accept them as they are with they flaws and imperfections. It could really be about them.
Also I love your interpretation of the music/intrumentation! It's a good point!
Luke has said the album his a strory (and most likely his) but it's not in the roght order. So you're pretty much right about it being a puzzle!
Thanks for sharing you thought! Dont hesitate if you wanna talk more :)
Lots of love!
“it’s not and never will be the lovey-dovey love song lierra stans wish for”
well, someone had to say it! i love both of your interpretations. i agree that the song talks about a more complex relationship that has dark sides to it too. which is not the image lierra gives to the general public at all.
they’re painted as this perfect couple that helped each other heal after bad relationships and they’re just supposed to be this cute, loving bf & gf. unproblematic and all, the whole package for “couple goals”. these lyrics however are all about secrets, lies and forgiving. i’m not claiming that i can know what they’re up to, how their relationship works but isn’t going in with all the truths from the beginning what you’d do when you’re starting something new after a toxic relationship, to avoid repeating the same mistakes? why would they lie, keep secrets and then forgive each other? needless to say a cycle like that goes against the “happy couple with a steady relationship” image they have going on.
could the song be about another couple? let’s take a look at the lyrics.
take all of me deep to where your secrets hide, where we've been a thousand times, swallow every single lie, take all of me
so this could be about your partner telling you their own secrets, and accepting your lies in return. when you look at it from that perspective luke could be talking about sierra here. that’s fair. which still goes against their public image. because that’s not really healthy, is it? someone in a healthy relationship doesn’t feel the need to lie to their significant other especially when they’re having a heart to heart like that. on the other hand, this could also mean, “we’ve been one of your secrets for a thousand times before, make me your secret again. accept me with all the lies that’s gonna come with it. accept everything that comes with me.”
i'll never give you away 'cause i already made that mistake. if my name never fell off your lips again, i know it'd be such a shame, when i take a look at my life and all of my crimes, you're the only thing that i think i got right.
um, okay... so when did lierra give each other away? did they ever take a break? did they break up and then get back together? according to their public track record never, no and no. cause they’re perfect!!! right? they don’t have a history like that. they’ve not even been together long enough for a history like that.
these lines are saying i’ll never give you away again and it sounds like an apology (since it’s acknowledged that it was a mistake in the lyrics) and a promise to a lover. and whoever this is, they’re owning up to their faults at life but reassuring their significant other that they’re not one of those faults, in fact, they’re the only thing that’s right for them. which is very romantic. so who could have such a history? lashton, anyone? it might be a good time to remember that luke, sierra and ashton wrote these lyrics. i feel like these are from ashton to luke. but who knows...
lover of mine, i know you're colorblind
i also have a theory about this but, this one i’m relatively less sure of... you know how lgbtq+ owns all the rainbows aka the colors, right? :) good. as you should. so what if this line means that love is love for the songwriter’s lover? what if it means that they don’t mind whether they’re in a heterosexual relationship or in an lgbtq+ relationship? what if...
and then this line continues with
i watched the world fall from your eyes
put the theory above and this line together and it’s almost as if saying you don’t mind whether your relationship is 🏳️🌈 or not but some people do. and i witnessed the way your world collapsed when you realized that first hand. that would be rather meaningful, wouldn’t it? (i’m sure if you’ve read this far you know where i’m going with this)
maybe it would or maybe i’m just reaching but these are my thoughts/theories on the song lover of mine.
You know what? No thank you. ✋🏽
