Chapter 3

Juniper berries, quinine and ethanol, dopamine and serotonin—deliciously, deliriously, swept through her like a tempest. Loosening her, lubricating her, flooding her with licentious intentions.

Under the confines of her clothing, her body prickled; hot and agitated and fucking aroused. An insatiable thirst licking the last drops of her drink from the rim of her glass, would not quench. Eyes scanning the bar, seeking any sign a patron might know her mind—sense her, smell her—she endeavoured to simmer down and contemplate her next move.

Had she not been immersed in such an array of intrepid stimuli; she might have come to a different conclusion. The only thought that surged through her mind though, was that that had been an invitation. One her body had begun to respond to; working its way out of the booth seat. Not entirely sure she would accept the solicitation; at the very least she could walk up, peek in.

Leaving her handbag—Mulder’s jacket thrown over it—and their carry-on luggage unattended, would prove not to be the most out of character thing she would do that late afternoon.

Fic Masterpost

So, in the spirit of full disclosure - all the X-Files fiction I’ve ever written, as memory serves. And some thoughts on how this fine fandom has taught me to write. 

Starbuck (circa 1998)

I’m not kidding, this is really embarrassing, absolute beginner stuff, but we all start somewhere and it’s interesting in an evolutionary sense. I found these on  Zuffy’s X-Files Homepage.

Without The Bee  -  I couldn’t bring myself to look at this one. That title says it all. 

Agents of Change: Return from Antarctica  -  Obsessions—the Scott Expedition and the X-Files—collide. Rough early days, but probably with hints of potential. A legit turkey of a title! 

Penumbra 1998 - 2009

(I’m not going to bother with Gossamer links.) Learning the ropes as I went. Oblivious to so, oh so many things. Rickety, untrained writing, but mindlessly in love with creatively inspired by the churlish charms of our two razzle-dazzle creatures of the night. 

Contact High  -  The last line was plagiarized, pure and simple, from one of Gerald Durrell’s books about his childhood in Corfu. It’s bothered me ever since, so the big thing I took from this experience: by all means steal the rhythm of something, but at least change a word or two. 

Vespers  -  Very stoned ramblings. Inspired by John Leonard’s X-Files essay in The Nation that I’d managed to extract off a microfiche in a university library. I have a soft spot for this fic, probably because Khyber picked it very analytically apart, which was like having Jonathan Galassi or someone suddenly pay attention to you. He introduced me to ‘show, don’t tell’, a paralyzing concept if ever there was one, which I yet only fitfully grasp.

Black Hole Season  -  Still breakin’ all the rules. This one was hugely popular, and amidst all the ballyhoo, Punk Maneuverability emailed me and quietly said: ‘Please pick a POV and a tense and stick with it’—vastly important advice that I was probably too full of myself to heed. This one won a Spooky award, one of the greatest moments of my life that I had to keep completely to myself (therein lies the painful crux of fanfiction.)

Parabiosis  -  I was eating cereal and flipping through the dictionary, and there it was: parabiosis. Who knows what it means. I didn’t have a computer, and was working in the mountains, so I wrote the whole thing out on paper several times, unimaginable now. It flowed through my brain as I scrambled through the woods in the evenings. Nothing will ever be that easy again.

Honeymoon Video  -  Promising title, not much there.

Blue-Sky Conjecture  -  unfinished Scully/Kresge

The Cretan Paradox  -  Americana. JET sent me an ear of corn from a corn maze, because she’s thoughtful like that. 

Free Beer Night at the Astrodome  -  Cut years ago in despair out of Heuvelmans’; I think part of it went back in. 

Fathoms Five  -  In one of Gerald Durrell’s books about his childhood in Corfu, his brother steps in a swamp and says that his shoe is ‘full of fathoms five’, so that’s where I got that Shakespearean misquote. I resisted writing this for a long time, but it would creep into my mind as I was falling asleep. I think this is a pretty good story, but it could have used one more draft, so since then, I’ve resolved never to rush to post. Events of this year kind of date this story now. However, it’s rather pleasant to read about a careless, joint-passing, COVID-free 2020.

World’s Tiniest Zombie Fic

∩dsᴉpɐᴉsᴉnɯ -  Very flawed, because it was written and posted under a fund-raiser time crunch. I really should overhaul it. The X-Files was ending and I was so depressed when I wrote it, and that’s an unfortunate tincture to saddle a story with. 

The Inscrutable Pair  -  How The X-Files taught me to embrace ambiguity. Goreyesque nonsense à la Gashlycrumb Tinies that also troubles itself to rip off Eliot and Homer. 

(7-Year Cold-Turkey Hiatus From the X-Files)

Gave away DVDs, got some perspective, did a little growing up, tried and failed to write a screenplay, two novels, etc. Then they put The X-Files on Netflix. One lonely night, I thought: what could it hurt to watch Darkness Falls? 44 minutes later, with shaking hands, going for the hard stuff—Redux II. Lol, the hard stuff of ancient philes. 

The Mythopoeic*  2016  - 

Heuvelmans’ On the Track - The nearly suicidal heartbreak that surrounds this story—it was the first X-Files fic I got bogged down in and couldn’t finish, and it left me with a huge mental stigma—sweetens its completion. Under its shadow I tried to become a Real Writer, without success. Give things time, I learned. Just keep working hard. The initial failure of this story taught me stuff that I now wouldn’t trade for anything. 

*I came back just intending to hang out with Philes, and didn’t want to make a big deal, and had no intention of posting fic, so I gave little thought to the name. But, characteristically ostentatious name, check. Still keepin’ it real, pure and self-taught, a bit closer to what Chuck Palahniuk calls a ‘kitchen-table MFA’. Check.

But what I really want to say is this. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to try writing if I hadn’t been in this marvelous fandom, having the method and the means demonstrated all around me by wonderfully competent and encouraging writers for whom I felt such reverence that having them reach out or comment on stuff was earth-shaking. They showed the way, and I followed. Hands on my heart, friends, I owe you everything.

hi hi i am a baby fic writer and i am terrified to post this, but here is a little cannon compliant season 9 one-shot. there is fluff and angst and smut and all the things @absolutetosh told me would be good. @absolutetosh is the reason i’m here if you don’t like it blame her

She could watch him for hours. His little body squirming underneath the mobile, milky eyes following her every move, drooping slowly as he teeters on the edge of sleep.

She feels so warm when she looks at him. As if the whole world was still. As if nothing else could possibly be more important than this moment, now, looking at her child.

Standing over the crib she rubs her hand over his plump belly and gently whispers, “It’s time to sleep, my love.” He whines and thrusts his arms into the air, wrapping both hands around her thumb.

“William, it’s time for bed,” she coos, pulling his hands away gently, kissing each tiny finger before setting them down.

Wise Up

by: mldrgrl Rating: PG Summary: Scully needs someone to take her home after dental surgery.  Pre-Millennium.

He came back from getting coffee to find her mid-conversation with her mother.  She gave him a glance over her shoulder when he put the to-go cup quietly on her table and then lowered her chin so that her hair obscured her face.  She switched her cell phone from one hand to the other and he shuffled to his own desk pretending to give her privacy.

“It’s fine, Mom,” she said.  “I promise.  I’ll just try to get it rescheduled until after the new year.  No, I…no, I don’t need…Mom, it’s fine.”

He sipped his coffee and opened a file, but kept his gaze higher than necessary to keep her in his periphery.  She pinched the bridge of her nose in silence for the next ten seconds and then she finally lifted her head.

“Mom,” she stated.  “I have to go, I need to finish a report.  I’ll reschedule for January.  As for Thursday, don’t worry about it, you just feel better.  I know.  I know.  I love you too.  Bye.”

Scully disconnected her call with a deep sigh that Mulder pretended not to notice.  He was burning with curiosity, however, and it was only a matter of time before he would ask.  He just had to wait for the right opportunity.

Though Mulder would have given it to them, William’s new old parents didn’t ask for evidence beyond the photo. (The birth certificate. The parentage report.) Perhaps they feared the little stranger who turned the mobile over his crib with a blink of blue eyes. Who lifted an oatmeal-coated spoon out of the kitchen sink and across the room into his fat fist.

Mulder wouldn’t miss the millions.

My HOT Fanfic Recs

I’ve had some requests, so I decided to make a list of my favorite fanfics.  Before I begin, I’ll let you know what I like, just so you know if your tastes jive with mine.

I’m an old-time phile, so the majority of these are classics from Gossamer.  Over the last couple years, I’ve been going back through the archive (NC-17 almost exclusively- I’ve got to have my standards, you know!) and adding to my collection.  I haven’t even come close to finishing!  So, I haven’t really delved too much into AO3 or other sites, unless I see a recommendation here on Tumblr.

Here are things I like in a fic:

The Airport by Jess :  sex in an airport Chili’s- ‘nuf said

Eat It Too by Rachel Anton :  Mulder’s sad because Scully forgot his birthday.  Little does he know that Scully is actually waiting to surprise him!  Some very hot icing-licking action in this one.

In the Car by @icedteainthebag (when she was still Adrienne) : Hot, hot, hot mutual masturbation in a car.   Don’t miss the sequels either- In My Room and In a Nutshell

Little Black Dress by EvieLouise Smith : post En Ami, Mulder gives Scully a little oral action while she wears that little black dress for him.

Never by Allison Kinney : Muldo and Sculls go undercover and have to fake like they’re a couple!  Overdone trope, but this one is sooooo good!

Peaks of Insanity and Valleys of Lucidity by XRae : This one’s dark, folks.  Mulder loses himself in the mind of a serial killer, and Scully helps him out in one of the hottest sex scenes I’ve ever read in fanfic.  

Risky Business by Shannon Kizzia and Satina : Some emails between our favorite duo turn a little sexy, leading to some serious groping in an airport.  ATTHS.

A Stiff One by Shannon Kizzia :  Ugh, this one really gets me. Mulder accidentally touches Scully’s ass, and they both like it.  Make-out session in a dance club after that, which includes Scully telling Mulder she wants to fuck him like an animal!  This one also has a fun sequel told from Skinner’s POV named 10.

Truth or Dare by @icedteainthebag:  Some sexy-times in a hotel room during a truth or dare game.  Scully dares Mulder to kiss her belly- HOT!

Thunder by Rachel Anton :  Drunk Mulder makes an appearance with a puppy, which then leads to some sexy oral gratification for Scully.  Yum!

The Words Series by Karen Rasch (There are a ton of stories in this series, but I personally like Three Little Words and Saying the Words) :  Mulder is forced by a killer to tell Scully he loves her.  Features one of my favorite fanfic lines by Scully, “Can I kiss you, Mulder?  Would you mind?  I’ve wanted to for the longest time…”  Awwww, so sweet, but also so hot!

Volition Unbound by Rachel Anton :  Heavy Mulder angst and jealousy.  Scully runs into her ex-fiance, and Mulder CANNOT HANDLE IT.  But it is soooo goooood.

Y is For You by Donnilee :  Charlie is dead, and Scully brings Mulder along to the funeral to help her deal.  SO MUCH comforting by Mulder.  I love it!

You’re Love by Tlynn :  I’m a sucker for All Things fic, and that’s what this is.  But this one also features a hot finger-fucking in front of the mirror in Mulder’s bathroom.

What Happens in Vegas by Malibu Sunset :  Remember when Scully got drugged in Three of a Kind?  Well, Mulder did, too, and they accidentally have hot sex while under the influence!  Can they deal with the repercussions???

So there you have it!  Some of my favorite HOT fanfics.  I’m sure I missed quite a few, but maybe I’ll do a new list sometime in the future to include all that I forgot!

This is part six in who knows how many from the prompt from @sunflowerseedsandscience : “Mulder is unhappily married when Scully is partnered with him, and while he doesn’t cheat (because sorry that’s not romantic), he falls for her so hard that he finally gets the courage to end the marriage and start fresh.”

Mulder’s mother-in-law was sick. Terminal cancer, from what Scully gathered from the little he talked about it. He was gone a lot, accompanying Lauren back and forth between her parent’s house in Newport News and the hospital and home.

Their basement office felt cold, empty without him in it. She felt like every small noise she made echoed off the walls. One Friday, she left early, unable to stand it any longer.

She went home, but felt alone there, too. She drifted out into her neighborhood, the warm sun of the afternoon laying long shadows through the streets.

There was a farmer’s market set up a few blocks from her apartment— an entire block’s worth of a street closed off, with tented stalls lining both sides of the road, selling everything from fresh eggs to flowers to jewelry.

She was looking through the selection of breads and baked goods on the edge of one of the stalls when she felt a light tug on bottom of the sundress she had changed into. She looked down to find a small black feline paw had reached through the bars of the cage in the next stall and had hooked a claw into her dress. Her laugh alerted one of the women working the rescue group’s stall, who rushed over to help release her from the kitten’s grasp, with an “oh honestly, Trouble.”

“His name is Trouble?” Scully asked, laughing.

“Her,” the woman said, smiling at the little black fluff affectionately, “she’s sweet but has an excess of personality.”

“How old is she?” Scully asked.

“Ten weeks,” the woman answered, then narrowed her eyes, seeing a prospective cat rescuer suddenly in her midst. “Here,” she went on, handing Scully a feather-on-a-stick cat toy, “play with her. She’s a hoot.”

Scully bobbed the toy about Trouble’s head, who took one swat at it and then jumped into the air and caught it, growling like a dog. Scully laughed, delighted.

“She plays fetch, too,” said the woman, who was still hovering nearby.

“You’re kidding,” Scully said, tugging on the feather, which Trouble refused to give up.

“I’ve seen it with my own eyes,” the woman said, “wadded up paper ball. And when she brings it back, she drops it better than my retriever ever does.”

Scully was thoroughly charmed.

“You in the market for a new friend?” the woman asked with a smile.

“Oh! No, not really.”

“Well, we’ll be here if you change your mind. Our rescue group has a stall at the Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays and Fridays.”

Scully smiled at the woman and turned away, thinking of buying a bag of apples and a bouquet of flowers.

“Miss?” the woman said, and Scully turned back to look at her, “Trouble won’t be here long. The cute ones get adopted quick.”  

Scully smiled indulgently and walked on. On her return trip through the market to head home, carrying a bag of greens, two cartons of strawberries and a small bouquet of yellow calla lilies, she saw a small girl playing with Trouble and a slightly larger orange tabby kitten. The girl’s parents were standing a few feet away and the girl turned to them. “I want the orange one,” she told them.

Scully was insulted on Trouble’s behalf. It was no fun coming in second. She veered back toward the cage and stuck a finger through the bars. Trouble rubbed her face against her finger and sat down, purring.

“Can I get an adoption application please?” Scully said then, and found that the woman was already behind her with a clipboard and a pen. The woman winked.

Two hours later she tumbled into her apartment laden with her haul from the farmer’s market, twenty five pounds of kitty accoutrements and a cardboard cat carrier that had little black paws popping out of the holes in the top.

She opened it up and looked down at its lone occupant, who sat, looking back at her, as prim and proper as a posy. She looked like a ball of black puff with two green eyes, as round as the moon.

“We’re going to change your name, Trouble,” Scully said, “A friend of mine once told me about self-fulfilling prophecies.”

“He left his wife,” she said, apropos of nothing, cutting her sister off mid-rant. Melissa had just walked through the door, carrying a bottle of wine and complaining about the parking in Dana’s neighborhood.

Missy froze where she was, one arm still in her coat.

“You’re kidding,” she said.

“I’m not,” Scully said, trying not to smile and failing.

Missy finished taking off her coat and threw it haphazardly over the back of Scully’s couch, swinging into the seat next to her at the table, her eyes intense.

“Are you sure?” Missy went on, “because they always say they’re going to leave their wife and then they nev-”

“I’m sure,” Scully said, sitting up straighter. “He went to court on Wednesday. I guess it’s been in the works for a while. It’s done.”

Missy sat there with her mouth open like a koi. She put her hand on the neck of the bottle of red wine she’d brought and then looked at it.

“Now I wish I’d brought champagne,” she said, excitement creeping in.

Blackwell chose that moment to jump onto the table. She sauntered over to Scully and gave her gentle head butt. Scully ran her hand over the cat once and then put her back down on the floor.

“What are you going to do?” Missy asked.

“Do?” Scully said, “He literally just got divorced. I’m going to give him some time to heal. I can’t do anything, Missy, the ball is necessarily in his court.”

Missy leaned back in her chair.

“That’s a mistake, Dana,” she said, “what if someone else swoops in?”

Scully smiled, thought of his mid-air confession.

“I’m not worried,” she said.

The morning after he walked into her apartment and kissed her, bedded her, started their forever—was awkward.

It was like taking the invisible fence collar off the dog–it still didn’t feel comfortable leaving the yard.

Finally, at 11:00am, he leaned back in his chair, threw the pen he’d been holding onto his desktop, and huffed a sigh.

“Why is this so weird?” he said, sounding perturbed.

Scully, sitting at her own desk across the room, laughed lightly.

“It doesn’t have to be,” she said, gently.

“And yet it is.” Another sigh.

She looked at him sympathetically.

“Up until very recently, what we did last night was… impermissible. Forbidden. It’s bound to take some adjustment,” she said.

He frowned.

“But I feel like we wasted so much time,” he said.

She smiled again, charmed.

“Can I see you tonight?”

Bless him, she thought, he looked nervous.

“I’d like that,” she said.

Sex Education FIC: Missed Call

It was Saturday.  Normal people slept in on Saturday.  Maeve had no problem getting up early when she had to, but was always suspicious of those who woke at the crack of dawn to vacuum or go grocery shopping.

She hadn’t intended on getting up at all this morning.  Isaac had done his best to distract her last night, but in the end she still had to come to a quiet and empty house and she could hardly sleep.  She kept waking up after twisted nightmares of Elsie burning herself, the little girl’s body writhing in agony as she fell off the the wobbly chair she had stood on to reach the stove.  The scalding pan of beans making a horrible sound as it hit the floor after her.  This was a new one, but the dream she’d had since she was a child where she found her mother on the couch, dead of an overdose, also made an appearance.  She woke up screaming.

She knew she had done the right thing.  She knew from personal experience how irresponsible her mum was when she was using.  When she wasn’t passed out, which was most of the time, she would disappear for days leaving Sean and her to fend for themselves.

Elsie deserved better than that life.  Which didn’t make the guilt and pain any less.

So she was lying in her bed, not sleeping, but not totally awake when she heard a knock on the front door.  She looked over at the clock which read 7:00am. If it was the bible thumpers, she was telling them she worshipped Satan. 

She grudgingly dragged herself out of bed and answered the door.  It was Otis.

Of course.

“What do you want?” she asked, feeling kind of irritated.  Couldn’t everyone leave her to be depressed and miserable in peace?

Otis fidgeted a bit, shoving his hands in his pockets only to pull them back out.  “I know I should wait for you to call me after what I said in the voicemail message but…”, his voice trailed off and he took a long glance at his shoes before lifting his head to look her in the eye.  “I just had to know what you think.”
