Sega updated the Sonic website and has put up updated character profiles, and finally included some deep cut characters, but I'm absolutely dying at Mephiles' profile:

The guy who duped a teenager into being his hitman, gave up in waiting for results and just did it himself

The guy who tried to get under Shadow's skin by wearing a skin that looked like Shadow, and ended up as a puddle of oily sludge across the desert floor because Shadow wasn't playing these games

The guy who tried to pick the brain of an actual robot, and got nearly turned into Swiss Cheese because E-123 Omega unloaded two gatling guns of ammo into him because he told the robot he was going to betray his bestie

The guy who's ENTIRE plan hinged on making a teenage girl cry

The guy who is currently being gaslit about his ability to exist in the timeline, and has been screaming about it since

I wonder how much of the fact he was using others, or trying to, was because he was still figuring out Being Alive and recognized that putting his own tail on the line for everything was a bad idea. He's not mysterious he's just a child trying to look scary and failing

I mean, he did get blasted into existence quite suddenly after peeling off his other half, and, contextually speaking, he was barely alive as himself for like forty seconds before Shadow backed him into a corner and shoved him in a glass tube while he was audibly confused and somewhat panicked. Pretty sure the first thing Mephiles ever saw was the destroyed lab and the dead scientists before Shadow and Silver started hunting both halves of Solaris

IN CONTEXT, he didn't do anything yet, but the paradox caused by him and Shadow dictated that Shadow needed to go back in time to trap him into the Scepter, in order for Mephiles to break out in present time and send Shadow into the future to repeat the same thing again.

Pure Form Mephiles is just a shapeless glop of gunk unmolded by any interactions, and the irony that Shadow gave Mephiles his own GUN Agent Trauma is not lost on me. Shadow accidentally manufactured his own mirror and stepped into the other role, he's literally That One GUN Agent to Mephiles here. 👀

He's just mimicking Shadow. All he knows is to shadow Shadow as Shadow's shadow.

He's also canonically either 10 ((the one that was in Shadow's campaign)), or 210 ((the one that was trying to put a hit on Sonic)). In terms of the ages of most of the all powerful elemental beings and ancients in the series, he's literally just a newborn or toddler granted infinite power and knowledge.

Honestly, I love how this guy was introduced to the series as some sort of imposing mysterious force that didn't elaborate anything at all, so we decided "It's Free Real Estate" when it came to commandeering him ourselves, and Sega was like: "Alright, fine, he's actually a bit of a curious ageless awkward dude on Creative Mode that aspires to be a Langolier, whatever..."

Like, Post-Sonic-06 materials on this guy are hilarious. It's canon that he's been put on hold in the Load Bearing Coconut Void, and he's begging for us to get him out. We actually stopped this character from getting scrapped like Lumina or Tails Doll or any other one-off character. He was literally put in one of the most infamous games in the franchise that was universally panned and could have easily been ignored in the grand scheme of things.

He wasn't supposed to even exist this long, his whole arc was completed the moment he became Solaris. We did this. I was even among the first iterations of fans that decided he had potential back in ye olde 2006.

He's our responsibility now, lol.

The guide has a lot of info, but I wanted to let you know that I am sharing a method I am actually using. It’s not sponsored lol (I almost wish haha, jk).

The artres.xyz is hosted on netlify right now, and there are no traffic limits or anything like that. I don’t pay extra to connect my domain either. It’s a really nice gig.

Anyways, this post is actually pretty important because you really have to have a web presence to do well as a freelance artist.

Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).

When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".

When the boat is still being built, your say "it".

When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".

When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".

When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.

If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").

If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")

If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").

If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.

If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.

I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.

The conversation surrounding cultural appropriation has been so severely mutilated by white “allies” that the original intention behind that conversation has become almost unrecognizable in most social contexts.

To explain what I mean, the conversation around cultural appropriation was started by black and native people to discuss the frustrations we feel at being punished socially and financially for partaking in our cultural heritage while white people could take, I.e. appropriate, aspects of our culture that we are actively shamed for and be heralded as innovators. It was about the frustrations we feel when the same white people who shamed us would take our culture and wear it as if they were the ones who created it while still actively shaming us for doing the same.

The original push behind naming cultural appropriation and having these conversations were so that we as a society could evaluate why we were punished for our heritage while white People were not. It was supposed to be about seeking solutions. The idea was to create a society where we could celebrate our cultures with impunity. It was never about telling white people that they “weren’t allowed” to do certain things. We did ask that white People stop doing certain things because they weren’t doing them respectfully and were not invited to do them, but the primary reason we asked them to desist was to reclaim the things they had stolen and to reassign them culturally back where they belonged.

White “allies” saw these conversations happening and instead of trying to aplify our own voices or even try to learn about the complexities behind why we were saying what we were saying, they instead began screaming over us and creating a narrative that was hardly even the bones of what we originally set out to say. It was like they took the conversation we were trying to have, completely decontextualized it, and stripped it of all it’s nuance in order to gain social currency by seeming progressive.

So the conversation around cultural appropriation went from “This aspect of our heritage belongs to us and we find it egregious that we are shamed for it. What steps can we take to address the racism that’s creating this situation as well as rehome the things that have been stolen” to “you’re not allowed to do that because if you do that you’re racist, we don’t really understand why that’s racist but you’re not allowed to do that and if you do that you’re a klansman no exceptions. So you’re not allowed because because”

At the end of the day, did I like the fact that sally was wearing dreads? No. But my primary concern was not that sally was wearing dreads but rather that sally could wear dreads and I couldn’t. THAT was the intended focus of those conversations. It was about addressing the inequality. It was about us. Now the conversation is just about sally and were completely forgotten.

White People are always asking me what they can do to help. You want to know? Stop talking. Aplify our voices and shut the fuck up because you all have pretty much derailed this conversation and many more like it to the point that we no longer are trying to make steps to understand and dismantle the racism around cultural appropriation and instead are just using it as social shaming tactics.

TL;DR: read my post. Most things worth learning about can’t be summarized in the bullet points of a buzfeed article. Don’t come into academic circles and complain because everything hasn’t been conviently summarized for you. Stop pretending that things aren’t accessible to you because you refuse to do the intellectual labor that is learning.
