Newsha Tavakolian’s subjects are all professional singers whose lives are limited by Islamic tenet. Some sing only background vocals, another has performed outside of Iran, and two others sing at women’s parties to earn income. It took almost a year to convince them to be photographed, so fearful were there about getting in trouble, Tavakolian explained over email. She chose the sparkly backdrop to make it look as though each woman was performing on an old Iranian television show before the revolution, when such things were possible. Their mouths are open, mid-song. But we cannot hear them.
Aram Han Sifuentes’s ongoing US Citizenship Test Sampler project engages the social and collective nature of needlework’s history and exhibits the value of non-citizen communities. Sewn samplers were used in Colonial America to teach young children needlework and the alphabet. The artist was inspired by her own naturalization process to use the format, creating a sampler of all 100 civic study questions which she sold for $725—the cost of applying for naturalization.
“Other non-US citizens can contribute to the pool of samplers, both augmenting the project and building a community. I use samplers to engage with the social and collective nature of needlework’s history, as well as to exhibit the value of non-citizen communities.”

All this time and everything’s changed but I still feel the same.
All good things eventually end and get washed down the drain.
