Are we ever going to hear about the roseverse Murdertale trio’s parents?
I was originally gonna make a animatic for each family dynamic, but I quickly got frustrated because the nuances of each dynamic couldn’t be translated easily in animatic form. A lot of the parents will be referenced, but they won’t be dived into too deep. However, since I know people might wonder, this post will answer in-depth about each of the MurderTime Trio’s parents and their relationship. Long post ahead with TWS of abuse.
Gaster was raised in a strict, patriarchal Korean household, which made him very stone-faced and serious. He hardly shows emotion or vulnerability, and his main goal in life was to get married, support his family, and leave the emotions to the wife and the child raising to her as well. In college, he met his wife, who saw him as a challenge. She was spunky and rebellious, but wanted to see if she could get Gaster to break his “mask”. This affair ended with them even getting married, and in a blink, Sans was born, and she quickly realized she was now trapped and this wasn’t a fun game anymore. Not to mention that she wasn’t prepared to ever be a mother, so when she hoped for some help, and got a blank face and empty eyes, she slowly started to crack and panic. The worst part was that Sans was a lot like his father, hardly showing emotions and being a very different child. Rather than get him checked out, she spiraled further, and found out she was carrying another child. Having Papyrus made her mental state worse, and though Papyrus was a happy and expressive child, the two empty faces that stared at her during dinner was like two drills. Finally, she couldn’t take it anymore and left them, leaving Gaster to now have to raise the boys.
Gaster wasn’t prepared for such a situation- and he also panicked. His family shunned him due to him being seen as a failure husband for not keeping his wife around, and he was left to work and care for two children. He was unable to properly emotionally empathize with the boys. Gaster truly did love them, but he simply was never taught HOW to love them, and that left Sans to have to learn while his dad focused on work. Sans faked a lot of emotions and masked his indifference. The only person to make him genuinely laugh out loud was his brother, who he loved with everything in him. Sans wasn’t angry with his father for his lack of support, since he was smart enough to understand the feeling and failure of his upbringing. He loved him dearly, and he knows his father loves him too, but he doesn’t trust him to raise Papyrus on his own. To help his father, he took care of Papyrus and became independent, helping Gaster raise Papyrus until Sans went off to college. While in his last year, Gaster disappeared, and Sans immediately dropped out to be with his brother again. He took on odd jobs from that point and kept the mask on until the human fell down and caused that mask to become permanently broken.
Horror had a happy family life for the first couple years of his life. His father and mother were deeply in love, and his father was estatic to be a father. His whole life was his family, and Horror’s mother was the glue for them all. She was the light of all their lives. However, the bravery soul ended up falling down, and killed her out of fear, leaving the family utterly devastated. Horror’s father struggled to balance the weight or being there for his children, managing his grief of the love of his life, and his extensive job. He missed big events, and struggled to be excited as he used to be due to his exhaustion, which slowly made Horror bitter. He hated his father near the ends of his teens for sacking Horror with all the responsibilities of raising Papyrus and taking care of things, and he fought with his father often. He rebelled in school and left home on very very bad terms with his father (one-sided). He graduated grad-school, only calling Papyrus and refusing to visit his father, unlike Papyrus, who had a great relationship with their father. Eventually, Gaster disappeared in the core, and everyone assumed he passed. Papyrus was hit hard by the loss, and Horror moved back home to support him, only to end up staying after realizing how much he missed his hometown. While there, he got to see his childhood friends rising kids and starting families, and slowly, Horror realized he wanted to be that as well. That he wanted to be a “better’ father than his was to a child who desperately needed it. However, due to his lack of interest in relationships, he counted that dream as a fantasy. He was determined to eventually go back to the main city to get a better job until the human turned up, and the want to be a father overpowered him instead.
Killer’s father was a cruel man. Killer grew up hiding under tables while his parents fought. His mother was the sweetest soul in the underground, and was so gentle with Killer. Thankfully, even Killer’s father spared his mother of too much abuse, preferring to cut her down rather than physically harm her. When she had Papyrus, she started to get very sick. For a couple of years, she was in and out of the hospital, trying to stay alive while Gaster was getting more violent and mean as the bills started to add up. Killer was too young to understand why his mom was getting weaker, and why his father seemed to scorn the new baby. Eventually, he grew up when his mother died in the hospital, and he realized he now had to protect Papyrus from everything. Lucky for him, his father never hit Papyrus, and hardly yelled at him. In fact, he almost seemed to compete with Killer to gain Papyrus’s favor, and directed his anger onto Killer instead. He hated Killer with everything in him, it seemed, and gave him many scars and constantly threw him out of the house if he dared to defend himself. Papyrus became the mediator, getting in between the two whenever they fought, which usually stopped it. As Killer grew older, it was clear his intellect was higher than his father’s was when he was his age, and it further infuriated his father, which made the abuse worse. Eventually, while fighting with his father one night, Papyrus jumped in right when his father was swinging and Papyrus ended up getting hit. Killer, in a rage, shoved his father back and began to get more physical. He grabbed a bat and slammed it into his father’s skull, giving him his eye scars and then ran. Once Asgore found out about the abuse, Gaster was fired and arrested, leaving the two children under watch of Asgore. They kept their house, but had frequent visits from the king, even after their father disappeared from his cell. Then, the human fell when Killer was 15.
All suffer from different types of abuse. Dust, emotional. Horror, neglect. And Killer, physical and mental. However, I will say Dust’s father and especially Horror’s father, absolutely do love their children. They aren’t horrible monsters, but products of their environment or situation. Killer’s father is the only one who has no reason besides anger for his choices. All Killer has known was abuse. Not just from the human, but at home too.
