I thought it was safe to look at the TRF script but… I was horrendously wrong…

These two paragraphs are, subtext-wise, the worst two paragraphs I’ve ever laid my eyes upon.

A) John was supposed to be shirtless in this scene… wet… wearing, just a towel and the very next thing that happens? B) Sherlock’s mobile (heart) is beeping madly on the table but Sherlock is ignoring it C) John answers it for him though D) It stops at 57

i've no idea who any of these characters are, but this blog showed up in my recommended section and i was curious. as a former dw AND sherlock fan i can say that all of these are fucking impeccable. so very like moffat. you're doing such a good job with these it's kinda ridiculous.

I think it's really important to note I too am a former fan of sherlock and dw! I really did (and slightly still do) enjoy these shows, which is why I think it's appropriate to view it in this critical lense.

Okay except that Steven Moffat is actual trash and his dismissal of the backlash as 1) not happening and 2) only coming from people who’ve never met a woman is actually harmful as fuck. If you don’t believe a thing is real you can’t respond to it appropriately.

The people saying “how can the doctor be a woman?” or “ugh, first Ghostbusters and now Doctor who?” Are not just socially awkward hermits hiding in a basement. They’re the men (and women) we interact with on the daily.

i reblogged this earlier but it’s been bothering me ever since and this basically sums up why.  i understand that treating internet trolls like they’re insignificant and powerless is a tactic.  but this isn’t just internet trolls.  there are tabloid fucking newspapers digging up stills from Jodie’s previous nude scenes with gross headlines like “DALEK-table.”  there are actual journalists churning out snide “think pieces” on why this is just political correctness gone mad, without even pausing to consider what it might mean to young female fans to see themselves as the lead and not the sidekick.  this is public, and it’s wide reaching.   its not just three dudes who never left their house.  would be super nice if it was.

also?  i’m just gonna say it.  Steven “women only watch Sherlock because they want Benedict’s cumbercock” Moffat is the last person on earth who should be calling out sexism.  clean up your own fucking house, dude.

Dirk and Todd must diffuse a very dangerous explosive device to save millions of lives. Dirk uses their imminent doom to admit that he has feelings for Todd, because he couldn’t possibly admit he has feelings of any kind at all under any other circumstances. They share a tender moment. The countdown gets closer to zero. But it’s okay. There was an off switch.

Maybe this speaks to tumblr’s bizarre ‘perfect pure progressive thing/trash awful anti-progressive thing’ dichotomy more than anything else (because a different more unknown white guy will be writing the new Doctor?) , but I’m sort of discouraged that the reaction to the 13th Doctor news from a lot of quarters has been “oh good, I can finally watch this show again, it is Progressive now”. And I don’t want to underplay the huge deal that a female Doctor is, it is a huge deal. But…

Bill Potts was a huge deal too. People who see themselves in her have written about her importance at length. She was (heck, is, she’ll almost definitely be back for the Christmas Special, Pearl Mackie’s been spotted on set) a black, lesbian, working-class co-lead on one of the biggest sci-fi shows ever. Bill beamed out from a lot of the posters and from the children’s tie-in magazines. Bill kissed a girl on television, a full-on passionate overjoyed kiss, during family viewing hour on the BBC. Bill had natural hair. Bill became immortal (by choice) in a world where TV producers almost seem to hate gay characters getting happy endings. Bill was an audience surrogate who represented a lot of Brits who don’t see themselves represented on British TV often. It’s just -

The companion’s the audience surrogate. Everyone was encouraged to see themselves in Bill Potts. And she was the co-lead. That bears repeating. The Doctor’s one lead of Doctor Who and the Companion’s the other one.

If a black, lesbian, working-class co-lead wasn’t enough to get you to Finally Watch The Show Again, why is a white female co-lead what eventually manages to do it?

☝🏾. I am excited that there is a female a Doctor, but people are acting like Bill never existed. They are acting as if a black female gay character literally was not just on the show doing some pretty big things too as stated in the article. Its as if people are just erasing her. And now that she may be a one series companion, I’m even more concerned that people will just completely forget about how important she really was.

Let’s get this straight for all the people spouting inaccuracies. I wanted to just celebrate Jodie, but I can’t stomach the misinformation.

1. Steven Moffat was not fired from Doctor Who. He is stepping down from the show if his own volition. 2. Steven Moffat has been paving the way for a woman Doctor for ages, writing passages in support of it in official Who content as early as the 90s. He has since cast the first woman Master and shown a white man regenerate into a black woman, as well as has written Doctor-like women leads like River Song and Clara Oswald, the latter of whom even got her own TARDIS. 3. His writing of this has had a tangible impact on increasing support for a woman Doctor. In the aftermath of the reveal if Michelle Gomez as the Master in 2014, for example, fan site DoctorWhoTV found support for a woman as the Doctor increase from 13% to 46.47%. Subsequent use of Missy and other characters fitting that subtext has further increased support over the past few years.

Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor is an absolute triumph. Seriously, huge kudos to Chris Chibnall for that. But don’t act like Moffat has been getting in the way of this. No matter how you feel about him as a writer, he played an important role in getting us to this point.
