I'm really thinking it's time for me to say goodbye to tumblr. Most of mutuals I'm in contact with over other social media or real life, but if you want to keep in touch I'm on Instagram and twitter as carlykjj and I'm happy to privately give out Facebook or my phone number to mutuals (please don't just add me on facebook, I will not accept unless I know who you are). I'll leave this up and check periodically to make sure everyone who wants to keep in touch gets a chance.

I just thought long and hard about when the last time I got anything positive out of tumblr was and I literally could not remember. It's just drama and ego and hate mail and I'm sad to end this era but it's time.

For anyone wondering, this is amazing enrichment for the animal and a great way to involve guests! The lions aren’t forced to play with the rope if they don’t want to, and these guys (and anyone else who tries this out) have an awesome close up and hands on experience, all without having to come in direct contact with the cat!

Hey I'm glad I found your blog! Its nice to see healthy views of health and fitness. But I wanted to know what is your opinion on obesity? I've been learning more accurate and healthy views when it comes to weight (and because of my past with an eating disorder it's been difficult). But I've seen people in the fat acceptance community claim that there's nothing wrong with being obese. Clearly people like that shouldn't be belittled but aren't there legitimate health concerns?

Yes, there are correlations between being fat and having certain health problems. But really, nearly everything is a health risk: Being single poses a legitimate health concern. Getting a tattoo exposes you to legitimate health concerns. Having red hair, living in Nevada, being a farmer, owning a cat - All of these things have the potential to seriously and negatively impact your health. Yet when we see a redhead on the street with a rockin’ cat tattoo, most people aren’t about to stop her and lecture her about making responsible life choices. Instead, we save that sort of personal criticism for fat people. Hmm…

In terms of how obesity is related to health, please remember that correlation is different than causation. Just because various health problems are associated with being fat does not mean that they are caused by being fat. Not all health issues (related to body fat percentage) can be directly solved by weight loss.

After all, obesity isn’t a homogeneous condition: There will never be a case where every single fat person is un/healthy, or has good/bad blood pressure, or has high/low cholesterol. Our bodies are incredibly complex instruments and weight is just one element out of many.

And honestly, I’m not even comfortable setting up “good health” as a moral necessity in life. The truth is that no one is under any obligation to be healthy or to behave in what the public deems a “healthy” manner. Health is an incredibly personal concept. Everyone has their own concerns in life and their own standards of acceptability. It isn’t our place to point fingers at another person’s body and say “You need to change that, you need to care more.” We all may want people to make good choices, to be happy and to live long lives, but these are complicated and unique decisions that we each have to make for ourselves.

In the end, people have the right to look and behave in the manner that they feel is best for them. Whether or not someone else is healthy should not be the basis for their value as a person, or for the amount of respect that you give them. Nor should their health determine whether or not they retain the right to bodily autonomy. No one is obligated to live by “healthy” standards. You only get to control your own body, no one else’s.

Because there isn’t anything wrong with being fat.

Going through my e n t i r e tumblr to contest flagged posts, almost started crying when I saw this because this was the first time I ever went to Rock Mill. I thought this was just a date with Chase but it turned out to be a first date with the place that has changed my entire life for the better. I am so so so grateful for this gym and climbing and acro and every beautiful soul I've met in that room in the last 22 months.

When I first got Cooper I got him this park bench scratcher because it was cheap. A year later I can only repurchase the same shape because he won't touch any others.

Because I don't think a sped-up video of my practice is really helpful to anyone but my ego at this point tbh. I would like to start doing free online classes, but I need a better recording device first.

If you engage with yoga related content on Instagram, you’ve probably seen countless posts like this lately:

While I know they’re well intentioned, these posts fundamentally misunderstand yoga, and are counterproductive in trying to help people deepen their practice.

The message these posts send is that physically difficult postures requiring a lot of flexibility are the goal, and that props are training wheels to help you get to that goal. These posts say “When you’re good at yoga, you won’t need props.” These posts say “You’re not doing the pose if you’re using props.” These posts say “Achieving the pose is the goal.” These posts are why students won’t use props unless you physically place them on the block or put the strap in their hands.

If you want the stretch that king pigeon provides, but you can’t reach your back foot, use a strap. There, you’re now doing king pigeon. If you want to get more out of your forward bends, use a strap or a block to enable you to keep your spine straight and deepen your pelvic tilt. There, you now are getting maximum benefit from your forward fold.

Most people don’t even know the reason why we practice yoga postures (I know I didn’t until I started teacher training). We practice postures to make our bodies open and relaxed and healthy enough that we can sit comfortably and meditate for long periods of time. It’s hard to sit if your back hurts, or if your hips are too tight, or if you have poor posture, so we practice. We use yoga postures to prepare our bodies and minds for meditation. There are 196 yoga sutras - 4 of them are about asanas (physically poses). It’s such a small piece of what yoga is about, and yet not only is it the most represented in mainstream media, posts like this literally refer to specific poses as goals.

Feeling yourself get stronger or more flexible is awesome. It’s satisfying and rewarding. But for most people, the poses outlined as “goals” in these posts probably aren’t ever achievable, and by making yoga about these things, we will only discourage people and keep them from getting the most out of their practice.
