Rebecca Cook, Landscape Designer, gave a talk last week at Rutgers University to the “Introduction to Environmental Design” studio. She presented the honors thesis completed in her senior year at Rutgers which explored how her perspective as a student-designer could help shape a campus masterplan focusing on sustainable water management strategies.

Nature, Design and Health

Head over to The World Landscape Architecture Research Journal’s site to check out David’s article, titled “Nature, Design, and Health” in their Research & Policy issue!

In his piece, David discusses the collaborative research projects under the Loeb Fellowship Research Initiative. Working with other Loeb Fellows, David explores methods for promoting health and well being by connecting people to nature at every scale – from personal needs woven through communal ones to policies governing our overall environmental health.

Check out David’s talk at the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning! He discusses the concept of salutogenesis (an sociologic term describing supporting human health and well-being, rather than on factors that cause disease) and focuses on how nature, landscape architecture, and salutogenic design concepts can help establish and strengthen health-promoting resources for communities and address larger health inequalities.

Tuesday: Greening the underworld, swampy weather, and a state amphibian.

The Lowline is an effort to build the world’s first underground public park in NYC.  It is a fascinating concept, involving a process of channeling in natural sunlight through an innovative new type of solar technology.

As a core team member of the Lowline project, David is part of the Research Team working on the Lowline LAB. The LAB is a small public space that will put the new technology that has been developed to practical use in making an underground park feasible. Once this test case has proven successful, the LAB will eventually be presented in a proposal to the city for approval

Dan Kiley Exhibit at the Center for Architecture

We took a trip to Greenwich Village to check out “The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley.” Dirtworks, no stranger to Kiley’s work, designed the courtyard for the new Science Center at the State University of New York at Fredonia. The courtyard is adjacent to the campus quad designed by Kiley years earlier.

Dan Kiley managed to make intricately textured gardens exciting both in their own right and as a setting for architecture. The exhibit allowed us to take a closer look into the work of one of the field’s most influential modernist visionaries and to see, through recent photographs of a select projects, how his designs have stood the test of time.

FIELD NOTES: Dirtworks Hikes the Hudson

Some of the team was lucky enough to spend yesterday hiking along the Hudson in Garrison, New York. We were able to enjoy sweeping views of the river and surrounding valley as we walked along the coast and through the forest. It seems we weren’t the only ones enjoying the long awaited Spring sunshine, as we had a couple close encounters with native Red-tailed Hawks and Copperhead Snakes.

Designing with Water

Rebecca Cook Wins 2015 NJASLA Student Merit Award

Rebecca Cook, Landscape Designer received the 2015 Student Merit Award in Analysis and Planning from the American Society of Landscape Architects New Jersey (NJASLA). Rebecca’s research entry, “Re-Envisioning Campus: Master Planning for Students by Students” explored how sustainable water systems and green infrastructure could inform the Rutgers University master plan.

150 Charles Construction Update

Construction at 150 Charles is coming along nicely. Soil is being installed on the 4th and 5th floors and Amelanchiers are being planted. Each bag of engineered green roof soil weighs about 1000 pounds and has to be hoisted to the roof using a crane.

Demonstrated excellence in graphic design programs, such as Adobe Creative Suite and in 3-D modeling programs

Strong hand graphics are preferred

Lead coordination of consultant disciplines

Lead and participate in project meetings

Prepare and manage drawing sets and presentation packages
