Me, age 10, doing an essay on the pharoah’s curse for school: huh. So this archeologist that died and everyone thought it was because he disturbed the pharoah’s tomb actually died because he used a rusty razor to shave and it infected a mosquito bite. I can see how people could come to that conclusion, but it is a bit silly
Me, today, shaving my mosquito bite-ridden legs: I must tread carefully lest I incur the pharoah’s wrath
its incredibly funny to me that the rest of the internet thinks tumblr is some sort of internet deadzone but every reference they make can be traced back to this website somehow. they dont think they’re quoting a tumblr post from 2011 but they are. they think they came up with goncharov but don’t know it started with a fucking shoe
something i've noticed that has become really annoying in the past 10 years or so is this fad of what i've been calling, for lack of a better word, "structural whataboutism." it's that thing where, when faced with a concrete, resolvable problem in your community, your answer is to blame it on a vast, unsolvable issue of structural inequality and then throw up your hands. "there's trash all over the ground in this corner of the park" becomes "well, that's where MEN OF COLOR congregate after their 12-HOUR GRAVEYARD SHIFTS and i'm not going to support a CARCERAL SOLUTION to a CAPITALISTIC PROBLEM. WE NEED TO ELIMINATE POVERTY AND THE SUBJUGATION OF THE WORKING CLASS" and it's like okay but sis. someone still has to go pick up the trash. we don't need a carceral solution, we need more trash cans. you're not going to eliminate poverty and the subjugation of the working class and even if ya did, there would still be trash on the ground. how any of this passes for radicalism within their peer groups i simply don't understand. it's radical laziness more than anything else
I was on a canoe trip once with a river biologist who worked for the county. After we found and removed a car tire, she started talking about the annual river cleanup her department organized. From a water quality or ecological standpoint, removing shopping carts, car tires, and other macro trash from the river really wasn't that important, she said. The real threat to the river was industrial and agricultural runoff.
"But!" she said:
People who see a clean, trash-free river are more likely support laws to curb more harmful "systemic" forms of pollution. People who participate in river cleanups take pride in their work--their river!--and become evangelists for protecting it.
Immediate action leads to systemic awareness, which leads to systemic change.
So many people who love generative AI don't have a creative bone in their body and can't imagine anyone actually enjoying the time and effort it takes to write something or draw something.

I think a lot of what pro-AI people are really wanting is stuff that already exists but they don't know it's out there like

I’m pro third trimester abortion. They never ever happen for shits and giggles but pro-life weirdos are always like “When does a baby become a person to you? What if a pregnant woman decides she doesn’t want to have the baby at 32 weeks?” idgaf. In this hypothetical, she should be allowed to waddle her pregnant self in for a termination if she wants to. Cryptic pregnancies when you only find out you’re pregnant 6+ months in are the scariest fucking thing I can imagine, the only other alternate to abortion in that situation for me would be suicide. Late term abortions are almost always because the pregnant party is dying or the fetus is incompatible with life but if there is anyone out there who does make it 7 months and goes “Nah, not feeling it.” I think they should be allowed an abortion. No doctor is going to do that so it’s a non-issue but as a hypothetical, I support it. My controversial hot take but I am not playing games with these people anymore.
The vast, vast majority of abortions are first trimester so pro-lifers know what they’re doing trying to demonize abortion based on the small minority of abortions that are performed after the second trimester despite the fact they’re done for medical reasons. Do not let them make you concede to their point that abortion is yucky and gross because the idea of a late term abortion personally horrifies you. It horrifies the people who require it but they should have access, always. They want you to be morally outraged about something neither of you fully understand in that moment.
