He was not expecting that response. Not expecting such a strong resolve in a human â in a player. But maybe he should have. Determination. What an odd, odd thing. Almost as odd as sentimentality. That, in itself, is far more dangerous than Determination. He shouldâve seen it sooner. Maybe he wouldâve been able to prevent some tragedies.
YOU SHOULD NOT THINK THAT WAY.
Itâs an odd comment, coming from him. From anyone else, it mightâve even sounded genuine. But thatâs not Gaster. Never has been.
YOU CAN PRETEND TO BE PART OF THIS WORLD ALL YOU LIKE BUT IN THE ENDâŚ
IT IS NOT YOURS. YOU ARE NOT OF IT.
IT WILL ONLY EVER BE AN ESCAPE FOR YOU.
WHY NOT PUT THAT EFFORT INTO IMPROVING YOUR OWN WORLD?
BELIEVE ME, GALE.
I UNDERSTAND WHY YOU ARE SO DESPERATE TO SEE OUR LIVES UNFOLD.
IN MANY WAYS, I AM IN THE SAME POSITION AS YOU.
BUT IT IS NOT RIGHT.
I AM TRYING TO BREAK A CYCLE.
NO MATTER HOW WELL YOU MEAN, IT WILL NEVER BE RIGHT WHEN WE HAVE OUTLINE INFLUENCES AND PRESENCES.
He stares back at her, expression empty, devoid of any visible emotion. But itâs there. Oh, itâs there.Â
YOU ARE FREE TO LEAVE.
I WANTED TO UNDERSTAND, AND I HAVE ACHIEVED THAT GOAL.
YOU HAVE ARGUED YOUR POINT WELL.
BUT I CANNOT GRANT YOU WHAT YOU WISH.
I NEITHER HAVE THE POWER, NOR THE WILL.
I KNOW YOU DO NOT MEAN US HARM.
BUT INTENTION SOMETIMES IS NOT ENOUGH.
Theres a strange disconnect between Gasterâs words and his tone, and for a moment, it catches Gale off guard. She had gotten used to him disagreeing with her, pushing against her points. He still was, in a way, but this time it was... comforting?Â
Maybe it was the encouragement, or the fact he acknowledged she didnât mean them harm. Regardless, something strained finally relaxes. She supposed this was as close to a compromise as they were going to get. Taking in a deep breath, Gale exhaled slowly, her eyes darting around her feet as she took a moment to process. Intention wasnât enough. Yes, that was correct. All of what he just said was correct.
âYou know...â She begins softly, after a moment of pause, â...If we were in the same world, if all this... timeline and control stuff didnât get in the way... I think we could get along.â She looks back up, cautiously smiling. â...I know saying âyouâre interestingâ might imply things because of what I can do, because iâm a.... player, but... I donât mean it that way.â
She catches herself before she falls into the usual trap of rambling on, trying to explain herself. Fix the world. Gale had a lot to think about, after a long, LONG nap. Did she have class tomorrow? What day was it? Fuck it.
âI... bye then. I hope we can speak again, sometime. Maybe.âÂ
