I met artist Ralph Frank Jr. in Columbus, GA yesterday. I was driving by and saw art dripping off the trees and house. I knocked but no answer. I took a few pictures and looked up to find Ralph on the front porch. He invited us in to see his place and it was filled with art. Interesting art, that was mostly his creation.

He was kind enough to show me his workshop and allow me to take a few pictures.

I know Ralph, and he’s a straight up boss. Professional hand-letterer and signmaker and painter who created his own instantly recognizeable script style and carved out a totally unique space for himself in Southern outsider art while still taking on insane commisioned handpainted sign projects on billboards and watertowers and the sides of buildings. He and his brother are regulars at the Uptown Drum Circle, and good friends to many hundreds of people around town.

If anybody ever wants to win christmas forever, commision this for me: a Ralphabetized version of the old Harry Kellar magic show lithograph, the one where he and the Devil are toasting, with DOCTOR POGO where it says KELLAR.

This Friday!

Playing a charity event tonight. I didn't realize it was a costume party. I happened to have my kilt and peasant shirt in the car from another gig, but it still didn't feel complete. So I grabbed a cupcake and improvised.

I made a Halloween wreath.

Today's workshop: this lovely 1940s Wurlitzer spinet piano, experiencing concert pitch for the first time in many years.
