when i was in fourth year, somewhere between the start of the school year and having daniel find me punching mirrors in the castle storage, i took a walk down hogsmeade. i don't quite remember why.
just plain clearing my head, maybe? it does sound like something i'd do, and back then, i had a lot in my head i wanted to clear. wipe out and wish it didn't exist. not exactly the kind of stuff i'd like to say here, and besides, it's not the point of this post.
somewhere down the line i met this lady. or, rather... the happy calls from the sidelines made me meet this lady.
well, she definitely looked well-off. stood out from the crowd with a clean-cut look that still made her look like she could easily have been someone's caring mother. i couldn't even help but walk just behind her like a duckling.
that was probably my mistake.
i choked on my own spit - she smiled so sweetly that i felt guilty.
"No, it's nothing, miss. It's just that, I'd never seen you before, and - and I began coming around here last year."
"No, no, I'm sorry I made you nervous. Coming here was hard then thanks to, mm... I heard of a certain rabblerouser making rounds and scaring some of my good friends away?"
"Ah, yes, that, um... you must have a lot of friends."
"Oh, friends all over, I can say, but you can never have enough - you never know if you need to rely on them, yes?"
when she asked that, faking an agreement left a taste in my mouth so bitter, i immediately thought of dad's oversteeped tea. i thought i was crazy, but she seemed to have seen my face, because then she stepped closer to have a look at me.
"Now that I thought about it, I don't think we have met. You look like a Hogwarts student, yes? My son is in his fourth year."
"Ah, me too. Well, aside the fact that I, um, couldn't... seem to act like one."
"Trouble with studies? Self-study not doing you well?"
"Trouble with... the self. Really."
in hindsight, that was an even bigger mistake.
"If you don't mind me saying this, which I hope does not step over any boundaries - down this road I'm walking on stands a neighbouring village, where I live and work. My son comes home at least once every weekend to see me and to help around, so I simply would like to offer you a space where you may feel well enough to study and not feel alone - if that's what you need."
it was hearing that that loosened up the twines around my throat, and i was speaking with some newfound wonder.
"Or simply, a place to be. Everyone needs one, don't they?"
a place to be safe, where maybe clearing my head would be as easy and easy to lose myself into as cleaning my dormitory room, well... who wouldn't like that? but it wasn't a place i was just going to go to - it sounded far. it isn't, in reality, but that was my first thought. i bowed to her apologetically.
"Thank you for the offer, but... it's quite the distance from Hogwarts, isn't it?"
"That is true. Oh, but perhaps you can look for my son and he can help you when you have a looser schedule. I sincerely do not mind people in my home - there are many others in it, after all."
"And your son's name, Miss?
"Muriel Goshenite. Please mention his mother Vira to him if you consider."
