For new witches who are tentative about divination:

So, I know it can be hard sometimes to see divination exactly how it is. Some people see it as THE ANSWER to any problems they have, some see it as total made up bullcrap. And in all honesty, it’s neither. Take tarot, for example. Seeking answers in the tarot cards is like going to a wise friend for advice. You sit them down for coffee and they say, “So, what’s going on?” “Well I really like this person, but x y and z are making me really anxious about doing anything about it. What should I do?” Or whatever the question is. And because they are wise (not ominous, just very wise), they tell you what they think. “It sounds like _____is really the problem here, so what I would do is…” The oracle is not set in stone. It is up to you whether or not you take their advice. You can say, “I never thought of it that way. That’s a really good idea.” Or, “What are you smoking?! Haha, yeah right.” And there you have it! Happy divining. 🔮

Sloppy magic versus calculated magic.

Neither is fundamentally better than the other, each has it’s strengths and weaknesses. Sloppy magic may be include the risk of going wrong, but usually utilizes intense emotion which is the one of most powerful things in magic. Calculated magic can lack raw power but makes up for it in being very precise and effective. 

Sloppy magic is for the rushed sigil you draw on your math test that you’re sure you failed, but with your intense desperate magic, surprisingly find out later you passed with an ok mark. Sloppy magic is for emotionally, violently cursing your abusive ex to suffer endless insomnia and horrific regret. Sloppy magic isn’t ‘half assed’ magic, or ‘amateur magic’, it’s very simply neither calculated nor precise. Instead of elaborate rituals, it’s rage, desperation, elation, despair, raw love, pure joy, etc. It’s emotional magic, rushed or spontaneous magic, unprepared magic, but still just as powerful a magic calculated. 

Calculated magic is making your bigoted boss lose his job by targeting his superiors, making them notice his shortcomings that they’d previously been blind to. Calculated magic is the elaborate, long thought out wards that you permanently have surrounding your home, with intricate sigils and laboured over energy grids. It’s calm, well researched, complicated magic plays the long game. It’s demands less immediate results, and more long thought out processes of magic, unravelling things thread by thread or tearing them down brick by brick, ensuring success.

Calculated magic sacrifices time for exact, effective results, whereas sloppy sacrifices precision for raw intense power. Calculated magic tears down the wall carefully but laboriously brick by brick with your bare hands, sloppy magic slams a pickaxe into the wall and immediately knocks it down without care about where the bricks fall, whether they’ll land on your feet. 

Always be aware of your actions, your words, your intention, your emotions.

The "I'm Tired, I'm Dying" Spell

This is a spell to do when you’re tired and you feel shit out of luck and you have more than a million things to accomplish. 

Things you need: 

Black Tea

Cinnamon (stick cinnamon is best)

Lemon and/or Ginger 

Brew your tea and add your ginger and/or lemon. The ginger is greatly used for success and power, and mundanely can be used to ease aches such as an icky stomach or headache. Lemon enhances physical energy and is great when you’re experiencing mental fatigue (just a couple drops will do). Mix well with a cinnamon stick. If you don’t have a cinnamon stick handy just add a bit of powdered cinnamon and swirl clockwise while saying: 

“I’m tired, I’m dying,

but I’m still trying. 

Lift my head,

I’m not dead.”

Say this while mixing until you feel that it is done. Drink the tea and take some time to chill before you go crazy.

Stones for people struggling with dysphoria or negative body image

Black Tourmaline – Dispels negative energies, acts as a lightning rod that catches negative energies and sends them back into the Earth to be transformed back into pure potentiality, eases tension and stress.  

Tourmanilated Quartz – Quartz with pieces of black tourmaline in it.   The quartz amplifies the tourmaline’s properties, making it a very powerful stone for physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.  Tourmanilated quartz brings opposites into balance and can bring polarities into harmony to work toward a common goal. Magnesite – A powerful meditative stone that fosters self-understanding and self-love, making it a good stone for boosting self-esteem and combatting identity confusion that often goes along with dysphoria/body image.  Magnesite is a calming stone that alleviates stress and makes it easier to deal with troubling people and circumstances.

tarot and pendulums can get it wrong

a response to these posts of “if you don’t want to do tarot or pendulum (or general magic) for this thing, you must not really believe in magic” i’ve been seeing around lately. 

Tarot does not have a degree in law, pendulums are not a doctor. They are estimations based on a situation, and they have the ability to be interpreted differently than the answer we think we receive. 

Pendulums, at least for me, have always represented an answered that averages a question down to a yes or no. However, life is rarely that simple. There are almost always other factors. Pendulums don’t communicate as simply as we do. “Does Tommy like me?” Well, he doesn’t hate you. Maybe he even likes you as a person. But maybe not romantically, and pendulums don’t have that nuanced understanding of “like” that we do. “Does Tommy want to romance me?” Maybe, but it could totally be for a practical joke because Tommy is also an asshole. 

Tarot tells you your future supposedly, and you ask it medical questions. However, it is in part working off your own knowledge of what is going on. You may have an unknown condition, and it’s not going to tell you about it, it’s going to tell you how you’re going to live and react to things while not knowing. How can tarot tell you that you’ve got onychocryptosis if you’ve never heard of it? Besides, tarot works solely with themes, not multi-syllabic disease names. You’d have better luck divining what’s wrong with you via bibliomancy and a medical text book (don’t do that, seriously).

In short, do the tarot reading after you visit the doctor, ask it things it will be able to answer. Tarot is not so much a tool for telling the future as it is telling you about yourself. Pendulums are not so much an exact answer as they are a shrug and “it’s kinda leaning towards yes? idk man”. They are not exact answers, they’re vague advice as best. It’s foolish to treat them as cosmic instructions or divine orders.

3 Tips for Trusting in Your Cards

  The main basis (in my experience) of useful, clear divination is trust. And just like people, you can’t just pick up a deck of cards and expect to fully trust the deck, or for it to trust you.   When I picked up a deck of cards for the VERY first time, I made a lot of mistakes. I’ve come a long way since then, and though I may still be a bit of a novice, I hope I can help some one.

Draw Cards of the Day!    Especially if you have a brand new deck, or one you haven’t worked with in a very long time. Not only does it open the door for interaction in a very simple, open-ended way, but by doing so you can get a better grip on what the cards mean and your own interpretations of them.

Get comfortable!   Clear a space where you can feel safe and unhindered. This could include a separate room, or your kitchen table. Wherever you plan on card reading, I suggest a flat, completely soild surface covered by a cloth unique to your card readings (though it’s completely up to you if you’d like to work without it!) Sit however you’d like- on the floor, on a footstool. Sit up straight, sit cross-legged. Make the room dark or as light as you’d like, etc. The more you relax with and around your cards, the better they can receive your energy, and the more in tune you’ll be! And if standing on your head with one shoe on and Enya playing works for you, then so be it!

DO NOT REDRAW  The BIGGEST mistake I’ve ever made, was not believing my cards were telling me the truth. I would redraw to see if I got the same cards again, or if the answer I received seemed unlikely I would disregard it altogether. Believe. In. Your. Cards! If something seems unlikely, trust in in- but with a grain of salt. Never ever EVER redo your draw- you will just to be disappointed when you don’t draw the same card(s)! This creates a barrier and disconnection- just like with a person. If you accuse all your friends of being liars, or need to check and recheck their answers constantly- you won’t have many left! Of course, if you feel the cards’ message was muddy or unclear redrawing for clarification is a-okay. But don’t redraw just to test them!
