Zawisza Czarny, also known as Zawisza the Black, was a 15th-century Polish knight and nobleman who defended Poland from invasion from Hungary, Prussia, and the Ottomans.  After his death, he became a folk hero for Polish nationalists and a model for knightly virtues.
