oh i forgot to post this. for the playbill contest last month!

imagine it’s sodapop’s 17th birthday, his first birthday without dallas. the gang is all crowded around him, singing. before he can blow his candles out, they go out on their own, confusing everyone. darry accuses ponyboy, but he sees that pony’s on the other side of the table, too fat to have blown out his brother’s candles. amongst all of the chaos, sodapop hears something from behind him. a laugh. that laugh. his laugh. nobody else hears it, but sodapop knows he’s here. knows that it was him who blew out the candles. and now, instead of a confused frown on his face, it’s a soft, sad smile.
