The Road

Despite somes beleif I feel The Road was a good book/story. I didn't care a lot more the movie however. I don't know many six or even twelve year olds who can be responsible enough to care for themseleves let alone carry a gun. When Papa died in the book I cried, but when he died in the movie it didn't phase me becasue I knew it was coming. This book kept my interest for the most part and was sort of easy to read. It was rather depressing though. I like to smile and laugh, so I probably would not read this book again.

I like this book a lot, too. It is by far the oddest style I have ever read, helps me work while reading because it gets me out of that a-z comfort zone. And it keeps me engaged, too. And its so cool feeling like I’m watching a movie or right there with them but they can’t see me.

Colton you are so right I feel like I am reading the first chapter every chapter. This book is better then the other two in my opinion. I am def looking foward to finishing it and the writing assisgnment that I will get to expand a chapter.

I got to say I much rather be in New Orleans with the smart kids, but since I am stuck here I guess getting caght up on the reading is a great idea! I enjoyed Chapter 1 because I knew a clepto like Sasha. This person like her would steal anything not tied down and that's the truth. But unlike Sasha they didn't feel bad for it later or even have any intenion of returning it later. I am also kind of weired out by the sexualy explict content in the book, plus I caught myself quoting it the other day :) f,f,f,f,f.. I really think I am going to enjoy it all the way through. Well I am done with the mid-term finally! I think I did well, or at least I hope so :) This only means now that I will have to read everything and ask more questions. I am ready for the break. I am also glad that we got to make some of the questions, this way i was able to study at least at little. I am definitely looking forward to the next book and I think I will start reading it over break. Good luck to everyone and be safe over spring break

On the first day on this class, the idea of postmodern literature frightened me, because I could not grasp an understanding of it. However, as time has progressed and the class has continued to read more and more POMO stories, I am starting to become use to the idea of POMO. This week I have found...

I am with you on that idea! Before this class however I had never read or heard the term POMO. I am enjoying it and along the way discovering that a little of Oskar lies within me lol! I am add even though it wasn't proven. I jump subjects and confuse my friends to no end. I can be talking about penguins and pizza in the same converstaion. I laugh when I catch myself doing it. I also loved the comics and looked more of them up, very awesome!

Before I took this class I was told that "we" were going to LA and so I decided that would be a good reason to tale this class. Then I find out that it's the honor's students only and I kind of got upset and got to thinking I took this class for no reason! However, I have learned a lot since then and I read more then I have ever before. I enjoy the class and hope that our next book is as good as the first. I also enjoyed writing our first paper although, it kicked my ass! I feel normal now though because POMO is a good example of how I write and talk, one subject to another without warning :) (post whatever number we are on)

ok so this goes with my photo, but i can only post under quote so please forgive me: This is a scanned copy of an acutal purple heart. My Grandfather earned it in WW2, he was a POW and he was face to face with hitler himself, but he escaped. When I was reading this book I thought about him and some of the stuff he must have carried, both pyshcial and mental. He was only 18 when he was made to go to war and when he came home he had a drinking and smoking problem, this helped him cope with the images of seeing women, children and people in general be killed. I think Eric said it well, people are rarely remembered until after the pass on, my grandfather for instance, he never talked about the war or his expereince we just knew. At his funeral he had a 21 gun salute and was buried with a US flag. He is still being remembered by me and others. I think O'Brien wrote "The Things They Carried" as a possibly outlet to what he saw in war and to prove war isn't always a physical gun and knife, or gernade battle, but war can occur within, like when the soilder was upset for letting Kiowa die.

Even though I still have about 30 pages to read in The Things They Carried, I feel like I have already finished it. This small looking book carries so much within it. After so many emotional stories from each character, I can’t imagine what else could possibly happen. Reading this book has made...

Yes I agree, this book also makes me feels much more aprecaiation for our service men and women. When I heard that our presidental canidate is saying women are not emotionally strong enough to be in war, it made me think that young me aren't either, especially teenage boys who are forced to be drafted. Azhar wasn't emotionally strong enough to be in the war, I mean look how it turned out. I comend those with guts that defend our country daily. Also I do believe our children and even we as adults should be learning about this war, I mean it was important.

Um… I hope this is not some Po-Mo manifestation of what you think… C’mon Diane! :)

This is my original post 5 :) Although I must admit I have not finished the book yet, I am having a hard time with it still. I cannot get the image of a teenage boy blowing up a puppy, but I do know someone who has served in warn and inflicting pain is a coping mecanism. We only get a glimpse of the war through the narrator's eyes and in my opininon unless we have been subject to having to kill another person or be killed ourseleves then I myself cannot say what I would resort to, to cope. Although I am struggling to read I do like this book and it is helping me ealize that not all wars are and outside manifestation of something, many fight wars within themseleves.

Let me start with saying that the in class quiz was a surprise! I read the book so early on that I forgot some of the stuff, then it hit me when we discussed it. Now that we are done with the book, if you haven't seen the movie then you should go see it, I won't spoil it for you, however I enjoyed the movie as a compliment to the book. I feel like Oskar gets what he needs in the end and that is a relationship with his mother. As discussed in class, things are really not always what they seem, this book helps me remember that. Loooking forward to the next book.
