I enjoyed the book club feel of this class also.  I feel that I if I was not required to finish the books I would not have liked them as much as I did.  If I was able to stop reading some of the books I would of; but the requirement to read on until the end made them all worthwhile.  I feel this is like teaching a child to swim the hard way; throw them in the pool and they will learn and they will like it.  Require the students to read postmodernism and they will understand and enjoy it.  I agree I would have never picked these books to read for enjoyment normally.

Post 14: The Last

As this semester comes to a close, I feel that this course has opened my eyes to a new literary genre.  This class has definitely exposed me to a literary genre that I would normally not read.  I feel this is trough the sometimes comical, sometimes serious, but all ways thoughtful input of both the students and teacher.  A few questions remain though; on the review sheet it says “how is the cart symbolic?”, does anyone have any thoughts about this?  Any help would be appreciated.  As this is my last original post, I would like to thank both the students and Professor Clark, for making this class fun and informative.

Post 14: The Last

Movie or the book? In some ways the movie differed from the book, but it stayed mostly the same. I think in order to succeed as a movie, they had to add more to the humanity and sympathetic aspect. I believe that is why there was more about the mother and wife in the movie as compared to the book....

I personally liked the book more by far.  A lot of the key scenes were there but many were done out of order or changed in some way or another, not to mention the addition of many scenes.  I thought Eli was a lot kinder in the movie than he was in the book.  In the book I felt like Eli was cold, mean and bitter; in the movie though he was a nice and kind old man.  I think that it’s the sad aspect that makes people like it; almost everyone loves drama whether or not they admit to it.

Post 13: Book vs. Movie

Although the movie was good, I preferred the book. The book went in dept more and showed better character development than the movie in my opinion. I did like the addition of the back story on the wife and the symbolism of the piano, and wedding ring on the bridge. The boy in the film was the exact age I pictured in the book. In my opinion Elli was more tolerable in the movie. I was disappointed that they left out the scene were the father was in the boat rummaging for supplies. The thing that disappointed me the most was that they left out the celebratory shot of the flair gun; for me that was a turning point in the book when things were finally getting better.

I did like the zombie apocalyptic feel of the book. I think the rather slow and boring scenes made the action scenes more exciting and entertaining.  The scenes with man versus man conflict compared to the man versus nature conflict made the book more bearable.  The book was an easy read, if the reader was able to follow the little dialog and understand who was doing the talking.  I thought the goon squad was the easiest book to get through, because it changed points of view every chapter.  I liked all of the books read in this class, and I have a deeper respect for postmodernism.

Post 12: Reflection on postmodernism

Now that I have finished every book in class, I can honestly say that there was not a single book that I did not enjoy. Yes, some were far more enjoyable than others, but I would consider them all good, and recommend them to anyone. The genre of postmodernism is my new favorite genre of literature and look forward to continue reading it outside of class. I look forward to seeing if the film The Road did a reasonable adaptation or a complete disappointment. I feel all the books that have been read are very different from traditional material and I would consider them all postmodern.

I agree the book can be depressing but I don’t think it’s as bad as everyone makes it out to be.  Happy things happen in the book, you just have to look for them.  I feel the book is like life; it all depends on how you look at; It can be miserable or it can be blissful. As far as I am concerned not starving in a world with almost no food is a truly happy thing.  The lack of chapters was troublesome for me also; with given stopping points I just kept on reading right to the end.

Post 11: There arent any chapters

So far I have been enjoying “The Road”. It hasnt (apostrophe left out purposely) been my favorite book so far, but I still like it. I have mixed feelings with the lack of chapters. On one hand I like the lack of chapters because it entices me to keep reading; on the other hand I am not a big fan, because I feel that it is harder to remember what happened when. Over all though I like the writing style and diction and I look forward to more of the trials and triumphs of the father and son.

This has also been my favorite book we have read in class so far.  The cook is very postmodern with its chaotic timeline.  I agree the ending of the book didn’t some up everything very well; but, none of the books we have read have.  I got the feel that the “hand sets” are the equivalent of the I-pad within a few years.  The last chapter did have an odd future; I wish they would have gone a little more in depth to explain why the new generation’s social norms have changed.  As far as I am concerned “The Road” has big shoes to fill.

Post 10:Misleading or Bad Assumptions?

In chapter seven “A to B”, I developed a liking for Jules. I felt sorry for him thinking he was just a guy down on his luck, who was falsely accused; and that all changed during the reading of chapter 9 “Forty-minute lunch: Kitty Jackson Opens Up About Love Fame, and Nixon”. I feel that Egan has mastered the postmodern use of a chaotic time line. Every new chapter completely changes my thoughts of the characters in the previous chapters. This is definitely my favorite book we have read in the class, and it is on its way to becoming my favorite book period.

I am also enjoying this book; it is probably my favorite we have read so far.  It will be interesting to see how everything ties together in the end of the story.  The safari chapter has an interesting writing style with lots of metaphors and symbolism.  This book is definitely post modern with the time line and the subsections within each of chapters.  Every chapter changes you prior thoughts of the characters and you learn why they are the way they are.  I am looking forward to discovering more origins of the characters and discovering what happened from A to B.

Post 9: Well Written Literary Chaos

This is by far my favorite book we have read.  Every chapter seems to be written by a different another.  The writing style, the tone and the way information is presented are changed from chapter to chapter.  It has a feel almost as, this book is randomly composed of chapters from many other books.  The book has almost no continuity; but that is why I like it.  It is easy to get engaged in.  I sometimes feel that if a book spends to long of a time in a certain perspective and setting the book becomes dry and boring; this book however, keeps me engaged because by the time I start to lose interest, I’m already in the next chapter with a new setting and a new perspective.

I also enjoyed “The Things They Carried” more than “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”.  The novel didn’t have the same feel as most war stories.  O’Brien did a good job in character and setting development.  I like the way was sort of written backwards in the sense that you learn more about the characters from past events told later.  The concept of the happening truth and the feeling truth was extremely interesting.  Most of the events probably did happen, but not in the matter we are told.  For me the rules of storytelling did not stick out to much; not all stories can be told by following the same set of rules.

I have enjoyed the first half of this semester.  This class is not at all as I was expecting; Its better. “The Things They Carried” and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” and the excerpts from “Postmodern American Fiction” are all different from anything I have read.  Some I enjoyed; others, I did not.  I am looking forward to reading “A Visit From The Goon Squad”.  I am also looking forward to comparing and contrasting “The Road” novel, to its movie adaptation.  My favorite excerpts have been “Generation X” and “In Cold Blood”.  Hope everyone has a safe and fun spring break.

I agree, the excerpts make it hard to understand. “Generation X” was also my favorite of those three.  I also had trouble understanding “White Noise” and “Housekeeping”.  The use of an excerpt can be both a service and a disservice.  It can be a service because it gives a reader a taste of the book; however it can be a disservice, because it can make the reader dislike the book and it can be confusing because the reader doesn’t have the back story.  I agree that they should be gone over in class to reassure the proper material was extracted from the text.

Post 7: The Disadvantages of Excerpts

I still don’t fully understand the excerpts from “Housekeeping” and “White Noise”.  In “Housekeeping” I fail to understand what their relations with each other and whether or not they are children or young adults.  In “White Noise”, I felt the whole plat was extremely disconnected.  I was able to understand the other excerpts pretty well but these two were sort of a struggle for me.  I feel that if I was presented with a back story and a character development I would have under stood the story better.  I didn’t quite understand exactly how these two stories were considered post modern either.
