Featured CoPromoter: Crowns & Style
Crowns & Style is a unique, artistic, and creative hub meant to inspire future generations. With a focus on multiculturalism, African-American pride, and an emphasis on self-love, what is there not to admire! The founders of Crowns & Style touch on topics ranging from loving your natural hair and the skin you’re in to film, fashion, television, photography, web series’, blogs, and more.
Crowns & Style “celebrates fashion forward melaninated women by showcasing a multitude of definitive natural hair & clothing styles.” We decided to feature them on CoPromote and hold an interview to find out more about their company and the inspiring works they have in place for the new year!
1. What inspired you to create Crowns & Style?
Many elements inspired me to create “Crowns & Style”. My love for photography, moving images, and style. My sister Shondrika Moss-Bouldin played a big role in forming “Crowns & Style” as well. When I create films and videos, my sister always questions me and encourages me to write roles for women, especially women of color and to not lean on what comes easiest for me, creating from the male perspective. My sister’s natural hair journey inspired me as well. I’ve seen her wear numerous hairstyles over the years, and I have heard many of my friend’s hair stories and it was very fascinating to me. How some people can live well into their adult lives and have never worn or even remember their natural hair texture because they have had it relaxed from a very young age. The natural hair movement has been gaining a lot of momentum these days as well. So that coupled with photos and videos on social media, eventually spawned me to create “Crowns & Style”. One day I saw some photos from @dihanapaz and it just clicked. Initially, I planned for “Crowns & Style” to be short montage videos set to music. But I changed it to music and voice over because too many times women are seen and not heard.
2. What is your ultimate goal for Crowns & Style?
My ultimate goal for “Crowns & Style” is to showcase a wide spectrum of stylish, natural hair, melaninated women. I want to show a variety of skin complexions, hair textures, body types, and perspectives. The perceived standard of beauty can be skewed at times in society, especially on social media, and I hope that seeing and most importantly HEARING viewpoints and stories from various women in “Crowns & Style” will inspire other women.
3. How do you find people to feature/film and collaborate with?
First, I approached my friends with natural hair who I think have distinctive personal styles. Many times, after filming them, they would refer me to other women, so I could plan to film one person and end up filming 5 more people than expected because of one person. Then, I fell down the “rabbit hole” on social media using relevant hashtags and reached out to different women who I think are a good fit for “Crowns & Style”. “Crowns & Style” has been well received that people started contacting me with suggestions on who I should feature next.
4. How have you been using CoPromote to promote your videos?
One of the most difficult things about creating online videos is reaching the audience that will be most interested in the content. I’ve been using CoPromote with other video makers and individuals who may be interested in “Crowns & Style”, and the people who watch “Crowns & Style” may be interested in travel, or photography, or interior decorating, not just natural-hair so it has been working out well.
5. What makes your channel different from the other natural-hair bloggers out there?
One of the biggest differences that “Crowns & Style” has from other natural-hair blogger channels is that it is more artistic. Most natural-hair bloggers and vloggers do tutorials, outfits of the day, event coverage, talking head videos, but “Crowns & Style” has an artsy mini-doc feel. Also, “Crowns & Style” is a weekly video series featuring a different woman. Other blogs and vloggers will typically have the same person being featured in their video content. Furthermore, “Crowns & Style” is completely original videos, and our Instagram shows original videos and photos that we created ourselves, not mostly curating and re-posting photos that other photographers have taken.
