GUILTY: NYPD Officer Peter Liang Convicted in Trial for Killing Akai Gurley
Rookie NYPD officer Peter Liang was found guilty of manslaughter for fatally shooting unarmed man Akai Gurley in a Brooklyn housing project in 2014, a jury ruled Thursday night.
“We’re not rejoicing, but it’s about being innocent,” said Hertencia Petersen, Gurley’s aunt. “It’s about innocent life. I was overwhelmed, I’m not rejoicing but justice has been served.”

Crowds, Security Checks and No Bathroom? It’s New Year’s Eve in Times Square
By noon, Times Square was already packed with revelers who have gone above and beyond in preparation for a night without bathrooms, food and drink on New Year’s Eve.
The security measures made the area “look like some type of quarantine,” according to Jay Bulock, 32, who was selling stools for $10 to $15 on the corner of 7th Avenue and 45th Street.

Sheldon Silver Guilty on All Counts
Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was found guilty on all seven counts of fraud, extortion and money laundering. Jurors returned the guilty verdict Monday afternoon, after less than a week of deliberation.
“Today, Sheldon Silver got justice, and at long last, so did the people of New York,” said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in a statement.

PHOTOS: Coffins Unearthed at Washington Square Park Burial Vault
A burial vault unearthed by a water main project was found Wednesday night, revealing piles of wooden coffins that likely date back to the 19th century, according to NYC’s Department of Design and Construction.
The coffins are in addition to the human bones found Tuesday in the first vault uncovered on the eastern edge of Washington Square Park by Waverly Place.

Pizza Rat is a Metaphor for Life in New York City, Says Man Who Shot Video
“You’re carrying too much and you have to go too far and there’s a a lot going on,” said comedian Matt Little, who shot the now-viral video of the ambitious rodent dragging its dinner down the stairs of the L train platform Sunday night.
“He’s not the hero that New York City needs,” Little added, “he’s the hero that New York City deserves.”

Man Wrestles Alligator at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park
A Queens bike mechanic helped the NYPD capture an alligator nicknamed “Jaws” that has been living in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park since August.
“I caught him! I got him on the first try,” an excited Joe Genovese, 63, told DNAinfo New York. “I pulled my [fishing] rod under his tail, he flipped over, and I caught him.”

Ospreys Make a Comeback With Record Numbers Nesting in Jamaica Bay
Ospreys, who were once gone from Jamaica Bay, are now back. There are currently 21 active nests around the bay and 45 chicks have hatched this year, according to Don Riepe, who patrols the area as Jamaica Bay Guardian for the American Littoral Society.

Women’s World Cup Champs to Get NYC Ticker-Tape Parade
On Friday, the U.S. women’s national soccer team will get a ticker-tape parade along the Canyon of Heroes, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced. It’s going to be the first parade along the route since the Giants won the Super Bowl in 2012.

Jacobi White, chef and member of hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest, has launched “Tribe Taco Tuesdays” at Bed-Vyne Cocktail — serving up an eclectic mix of food and beats.
“I call it the total hip-hop approach. I’ll cook at a spot and remix their menus,” White says. “It’s like going on a food tour.”

Brooklyn Has Highest Percentage of Women-Led Startups in the Nation
The female entrepreneurial scene is bustling in the borough with companies like Brooklyn Industries and Etsy leading the way for smaller female-led startups. A recent study by Crunchable found that 28 percent of all Brooklyn startups that received initial funding between 2009 and 2014 had at least one female founder. That’s nearly twice the national average of 15 percent.

Rockaway Midshipman Killed in Amtrak Crash
Justin Zemser, 20, a star Queens football player who was devoted to his community was killed Tuesday in the Amtrak train wreck in Pennsylvania, according to his family. Zemser was returning home to Rockaway Beach from the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland when the train he was on derailed outside Philadelphia, killing him and six other passengers.
