On re-entering the cloister, the archdeacon found at the door of his cell his brother Jehan du Moulin, who was waiting for him, and who had beguiled the tedium of waiting by drawing on the wall with a bit of charcoal, a profile of his elder brother, enriched with a monstrous nose.

Folks, I am really trying to get more Paul Gavarni content on this blog, I swear, but my great obstacle is [clenches fist] being very shitty at reading French. :(
uhh this is so mortifying when I have like 10 mutuals who are at least B2 if not native speakers of French
An 1838 Gavarni cartoon, and problem no. 1 is I can't even read the caption very well, but I think it says:
Rêver qu'on est riche, qu'on est aimé de la grande dame qui vous occupé, rêver qu'on se promène avec elle sur des bords fleuris... et se réveiller dans son [?? what is this word] d'étudiant, mouillé, enrhumé et manquant d'argent
My (bad) translation:
To dream that you're rich, that you're loved by the great lady who takes care of you, to dream that you're walking with her on some flowery embankment... and then you wake up in your student [garret?], wet, with a cold, and broke.
