“Miss Cupid. I need for you to understand that while I am medically inclined to properly diagnose and remedy your problems; I cannot sit here and listen to your emotional problems as that is not my medical expertise.”

He gently taps her on the head with his clipboard.

“Now if you’re done rambling on, I can continue with the evaluation process of... um. Actually, I’m not quite sure WHAT seems to be problem? Considering that you look pretty healthy.”

“I like to enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea while listening to some piano music on my record box.”

“Believe it or not, my ability to restore (or “heal”) others was discovered when my-”

“Yes. An otoscope is used to examine one’s ear canal and ear drum for any possible illnesses during a check-up. Most individuals have had this tool used on them and is completely pain-free!”

Did you always wanted to be a doctor or did you have other dream jobs?

“I’ve always wanted to be a doctor ever since I learned about my ability, but if I had to choose another dream job that I’d want... it would probably be as school teacher or a guidance counselor!”

“Oh my- Are you here to see me!? I didn’t expect there to be any new visitors to be coming by any time soon!”

Dr. Otto is frantically trying to tidy up his mess of an office by straightening a few stacks of papers, throwing away old pens, and cleaning the old sandwich crumbs off his desk.

“Please excuse the mess! It’s been hectic here lately and I’m trying my best to keep my office up to proper health standards, haha.”

Upon throwing away the last piece of trash in the office bin, Dr. Otto placed himself in his all to familiar chair and focused his attention to the one before him.

“Well, allow me to formally introduce myself. My name is Dr. Otoscope, but please, call me Dr. Otto or “Otto” if you prefer!”

“Change of Scenery”

Peeking out from the alleyway shadows, the bandaged man checked his surroundings; observing the possibilities of being detected upon moving any further. It had been 37 hours since Otto left behind his former life as a medical doctor, but he was certain there would be a search party made for his sudden disappearance soon. A doctor gone missing after assaulting one his staff members into a coma would make headline news quickly.

“But it wasn’t my intention to harm them… or anyone! None of this would have had to happen if they had just-” Otto’s thoughts came to a stop upon feeling a cold drop of water. Then another, and another, until he felt several more droplets hit his body. The forecast had predicted a slight chance of rain occurring later in the evening, but the doctor didn’t expect it to happen for another few hours.

Surveying the area once more, Otto made a sprint towards a local diner across the street. With each step the rainfall became heavier to the point of soaking through doctor’s clothes. Reaching for the handle, Dr. Otto opened the diner door and shut it behind him. He was relieved to finally be inside a sheltered area away from the wet embrace of the outside, but felt a slight chill run down his body. “Wonderful. Wet clothes. Just fantastic…” He thought before making his way to an empty booth in the back of the diner. “I suppose this should be the least of my worries. For now, I need to lay low and plan my next route.” Otto pondered as he sat inside the booth. The uncomfortable feeling of his wet clothes making contact with the leather cushions of the booth sent another chill down his body.

“Maybe a new set of clothes should be my next priority…”

Oh me oh my, that was certainly a flustered entrance. Not something the much larger man had expected to see. As discreetly as possible, golden eyes peered over to the one bandaged person making his way to the very back. Didn’t even bother with a waitress.

It certainly wasn’t due to the weather. It couldn’t be. The man fidgeted about with his clothes, glancing around as if he saw the Devil himself. Or that he just committed murder. That last thought made the puppet grin. With a calm demeanor, he slowly sat up from the counter he had seated himself at, making his way over to the man in the booth. The look on his face was one that was to set someone at ease. No grin other than the slight tilt at the corners of his lips.

“Bonjour, mon ami. It seems like this table could be used for two, non?”

Taking off his coat and setting it to the empty side of the booth to drip dry, Dr. Otto looked up to find a random individual that he presumed to be one of the wait staff ready to take his order. It wasn’t until the man asked if he could accompany the doctor at his booth that his preconceived notion was immediately doused.

“I suppose this table could hold more than one individual… however-” Otto’s eyes wandered around the diner and noticed a couple of vacant seated areas. It was clear that the doctor was visibly confused at why an individual he’s never met before would want to sit at the same booth as him. Was he a patient he’d met before? No, he’d remember someone with an accent like his. An old college acquaintance? No, his medical school had a fairly small amount of students and everyone knew each other on a first name basis. Just who was this man?

“Wouldn’t you rather dine at a booth of your own? Not to say I would shoo you away from sitting at this area, I don’t plan on sitting here for too much longer. But why here? Do… we know each other?” Dr. Otto’s questions weren’t poised with ill-intent, he just needed to know why this man wanted to sit with him. Regardless of the situation, Otto made sure to keep his guard up, just in case the man was some undercover cop or detective. He hadn’t read in the news about a search warrant for him yet, but he wasn’t willing to take any risks.

He eyed the jacket the man had taken off. How long had this man been outside once it started to rain? For him to be this soaked…

He clicked his tongue. No, no, this simply won’t do. Can’t have him getting sick. Given how he was inside now, those chills oughta come in soon now that he was somewhere warmer. He also really didn’t want to deal with a literal chatterbox. So, he slipped off his suit jacket and wrapped it around the poor man’s shoulders.

“There we are, monsieur. Hopefully that will help keep you warm, if not just a little. As for your question, non, we haven’t met. I just happen to see a man clearly down on his luck.” He said this while sitting down across from him in the booth.

Propping his elbows on the table, he gives a knowing smile.

“What is ailing you, my friend? Of course, no need to actually tell me. I always find myself feeling a lot better compared to when I kept it in.”

Jerking back into the cushions of the booth as the man inched closer to Otto, but quickly put down his guard once he saw the individual taking off the top layer of his clothing and placing it on the shivering doctor. This was an unorthodox gesture, given the overall situation, but the lingering warmth of the jacket from the man’s body helped put Otto’s shivering at ease. “Thank… you?” Otto responded. “I won’t lie, this is quite unnerving for someone to be this nice to someone they’ve just met.”

He adjusts and turns himself towards the man as he sits down into the booth. This encounter was already jarring enough to leave the doctor more than confused, but he tried his best to wave it off as just an individual who could have been raised to be humble to others. Still. He needed to keep his guard up. “What is ailing me?” He raised an eyebrow and tried to play dumb. There were risks to explaining the truth to a complete stranger, regardless of how nice they are. “Currently the coldness from the rain and the slight draft inside is what’s ailing me, but other than that, I’m fine.”

Dr. Otto twiddled his fingers underneath the table thinking of his next choice of words. “While I’m thankful for your kind gestures- I’m still taken aback that you would do this for someone like me. Your parents raised you very well.”

“Come now, what’s the harm in helping someone who looks like they nearly got mugged? I will admit, my…appearance does seem to set people off. Understandably so, as a towering puppet man with pointy teeth will do that.” As much as it was amusing to see, it would get tiring to a point. When he was out on a daily commute, doing errands and such, it made it hard for anyone to interact. The most he could do was be nice to people so that they wouldn’t be alarmed as much.

At his answer, the man’s eyes seemed to just flash in interest. Was too quick to see for anyone to notice, but something about this man…he couldn’t place it yet, but he could tell there was something…interesting. Second after the bandages. Was he in a horrid accident? Not the question to ask now, but the thought did creep into his mind.

He still seemed on edge though. He gave a warm laugh at what he said. “Well, monsieur, that is very nice of you to say. I’m just a man that can’t turn a blind eye to someone else that needs help, be it just sheltering from the rain, calling for a cab, to offer temporary residence.”

“Puppet man?” Otto repeated in his head. “That’s a first for me to see a puppet in my lifetime- let alone in Inkwell. This also raises the question of what he’s doing in a diner like this. From the looks of him, he seems to be quite well-off for someone that buys a dress jacket made out of such fine materials. Even though he acts like a genuinely nice person, I’m still not certain about everything that’s happening. Not to mention the way he carries himself like those entrepreneurs I’d occasionally meet in my office at the hospital. With that being said, this raises one last question.”

“I’d be lying if I said your offers didn’t appeal to me, but I don’t think I could accept them even if I tried. I have quite the terrible conscience when it comes to letting others help me.” A chuckled slipped from the doctor’s lips. “Plus, I’m sure a great man like yourself is quite busy on a day-to-day basis, right? I apologize in advance for assuming your lifestyle based solely off your appearance- I’m sure you get that a lot as it is.”

Otto shifted into his seat awaiting a response, but as began adjusting, another wave of uncomfortable coldness ran up his spine from the wetness of his clothes. The cold shiver was so intense that the poor doctor let out a loud sneeze, leaving him slightly disoriented. Grabbing a napkin from the side of the booth table and blowing his nose, Dr. Otto turned his attention back towards the gentleman. “Ah, pardon me! I hope I didn’t accidentally sneeze on you... uh- Sorry. I don’t believe I got your name?”

Dr. Otto, I hope to become a doctor some day! I know it's not easy but, I would do anything just to become one.

“With the drive you have now, I know that you’ll achieve your dream. Even in the face of uncertainty, never forget that feeling of why you want to be a doctor. I’m wishing you the best of luck.”

While I am not one to judge those who do partake of these depressants, as a doctor I must implore that everyone seek a healthier alternative. Like playing a nice game of chess.”

Gripping the left side of his arm with his right hand, the doctor let out a long but jagged exhale.

“It wasn’t. My. Fault. I didn’t mean to push away one of my trusted staff members. I didn’t know my powers could cause any harm! I never meant for any of this to happen and be judged by so many peering eyes! Do you think no one knows what I did? Do you think that I haven’t tried explaining my side of the story to the press? I’ve tried being an honest man! I’ve tried apologizing for the sin I’ve committed! But it’s never enough. Nothing is ever enough for you all, is it!!?”

A slight form of steam began emerging from the doctor’s hands. The burning rage inside of quelled at each outburst he gave the anonymous individual.

“Do us both a favor, and leave me alone.”
