My main reason was that I see a lot of unexplored potential with them together! I've shipped them both together for about a year or more now, and I find their dynamic really interesting. Plus,, i REALLY wanna normalize it a bit more so that I can chitty chat with more people about them!!! I have seen a total of like,, 15 artworks of them on tumblr and most just being requests :’-)
(plus, but don't tell anyone, i really like Fresh sans' character... And I love thinking of scenarios for him to be placed in)
Im gonna go on a bit of a tangent here for my reasoning behind why i enjoy them so much,, ↓
To start, Fresh is an emotionless freak of a parasite who purposely goes out of his way to annoy/bother people just for the fun of it— and to further his goals to stay relevant with the creators. It's hard to think about ANYONE wanting to be in any sort of relationship with him (platonic or not), especially considering how he typically only lets people form those types of bonds with him if he wants to get something out of them (which mostly ends up being possession.) Although most residents of the mutliverse know nothing about all of this stuff, I'm sure Fresh still gives them the heebie jeebies whenever hes around. Something about him is fundamentally wrong, his reactions unnatural, and his body language threatening. Plus, who's just able to scare the pants off of error (who is a known mass murderer!!) just by being around him? Not many people around him would really give him a chance, even if they don't know he's a parasite that possesses people's bodies and eats their souls. (Which, I'm sure, Fresh doesn't let slip. Only core, error, and very few others know his true nature, thanks to their own abilities)
I think that's really where Dream comes in, because he still would give Fresh a chance, regardless of his unnatural nature. I think Dream would see the way others treat Fresh, how they ostracize him, and would feel empathetic to his situation. His past showed him the result of a similar situation, and so he can relate with what Fresh 'handles' (even if Fresh doesn't care if people are creeped out by him, or he might even find it a bit funny that they are) so Dream goes out of his way to interact with him and try and really hear him out. I think that when Dream initially would go up to Fresh, he'd immediately feel leagues of negativity (from his host, who is feeling copious amounts of pain), and he wouldn't know why or what's happening to him, but that would only further encourage him. I've always believed that Dream, being able to sense other people's emotions, IS able to read negative emotions (or at least feel the sting of them). However he struggles to really pinpoint where they come from, and what emotions there are in specific. So when he feels pain just radiating off of him he'd become a bit worried. Believing, maybe if he got close enough to Fresh that he would open up and maybe let him help him, despite the fact Fresh never actually acts as a hurt man would.
Fresh of course, would immediately jump on this situation, completely embracing it. He knows that Dream is a big figure, though, so he would never immediately jump to possession. That would absolutely change his weirdness to something a bit more sinister to the mass public if Dream one day suddenly went missing while seen hanging around Fresh. Fresh would figure that the best thing he would get out of their relationship is maybe a bit more trust from people in general. If they see Fresh around Dream, they'll likely assume that if Dream is willingly hanging around him, then he must not be as weird as most initially thought! Plus, if anything ever goes south for Fresh and he needs someone to defend him, who would be better than Dream? Plus with the creators, it would absolutely add some intrigue to his story! It's the best of every world, for Fresh.
All that's just to say, Fresh would absolutely go into any sort of friendship with Dream with malicious intentions. Dream wouldn't be very surprised, either. It isn't the first or last time that someone will attempt to use him, and I don't think he could hold it against Fresh (who he views as this sad, hurt, and lonely person, who can't admit that he is.) for trying to get something out of their relationship. That isn't to say, that he would let him go too far with anything, or be completely oblivious. He would just try his hardest to not immediately assume the worst of Fresh. Then, maybe, Fresh's emotions can develop and the situation complicate itself more, and maybe a relationship could develop!!!! That trust could really form, through time, and maybe Fresh eventually would let his guard down! Or maybe he would see that he doesn't want to be around Dream for the same reasons, and he'd distance, but Dream would incessantly reach out.
