Study With Sweets || Elli and Hiro

With Hiro rushing to her side, Elli’s cheeks flushed. It was nice to think he cared so much, but she felt as if she might have been reading too much into it. However, her drenched notebook proved to be a good distraction. 

When Hiro spoke to her she turned to look at him, a little surprise. He wanted to take her somewhere? She definitely wasn’t expecting that. With her interest piqued and not rude enough to turn him down anyway, Elli replied, “Sure. That sounds good right about now.”

She followed suit and started to pack up her things. The notebook wasn’t wet, only a bit damp now. The pages were stained, but it wouldn’t contaminate her other books. After packing up she stood by Hiro, waiting for him to lead the way. 

"Where are we going?" she asked, "Or is it a surprise?"

Hiro began to walk at a leisurely pace after putting on his schoolbag, which was somewhat odd for him considering that he was usually in a rush to get some sort of work done. Perhaps his more relaxed speed was because of Elli...He wanted to make her feel comfortable, to lift her mood...And he was so relieved to hear that she had not refused his offer. 

At her question, he fixed the collar of his shirt. "I could tell you, if you like. However, if you prefer surprises, then...I can do otherwise." He gave an almost playful chuckle—another action that was somewhat uncharacteristic of him, but he seemed to not be able to resist.

Isolated Studiers || Vaughn and Hiro

Vaughn couldn’t help but shake his head at Hiro’s modesty; the boy really was a saint and a polite one at that. He never met anyone with such a vocabulary and polite mannerism; it was refreshing to spend lunch with him. “It was no problem at all Hiro, the least I could do after all” he said with a small smile because Vaughn was not known to ever smile and if he had to it was going to be a very small one, one that was barely noticeable.

“Well from the review it said that the test will consist of chapters 4 through 8 and mainly vocabulary words” he said as he took out his notebook and his textbook and spread them out before them and began to go through them. “It’s always the vocabulary that gets me” he said with a small sigh.

Although Hiro had not known Vaughn for the longest time, he was observant enough to notice that small nudge on his mouth and had known that it had actually meant something. He thus returned the gesture, providing a humble smile.

"Ah, I see," he said, taking a sip of the soda he was given. To be honest, he was quite parched himself, so he was very, very grateful. "I've an idea, then. Perhaps instead of doing the simple routine of studying, we could use a game."

After speaking, he fumbled around through his backpack (which he had set next to him on his seat), and took out a stack of note cards and scissors. He started to cut up some of the note cards in half. Once he was finished with those, Hiro placed the cards in a five-by-five square. "You can write the word in kanji and romaji on one of the cards, and then the English word on another. I will place them around with the white side up, and you can attempt to match them. This is similar to one of those children's card-matching games...which, it actually is, haha."

Her hand immediately shot up. “Ah! Pick me! Pick me!” She bounced in her seat. She scooted as close as possible to Hiro, their sides touching.

"It would be so much fun! It’d be like a trojan horse, but edible. Oh, what if we made it so big we could hide inside it and eat it from the inside?" Now her train of thought was getting away.

Hiro was a bit unsettled by how close Chelsea had gotten, but he knew that she was simply excited. However, he could not blame her. In fact, he was a bit excited himself for this cake-to-be.

"Haha, well, perhaps we should take baby steps first," he said, laughing lightly. "If all ends as planned, then I'm sure that we would be able to create whatever we may like." 

He scratched the bottom of his chin and reached for a pen in his pocket. Once he had it in his grip, he gently patted his pen once on both of Chelsea's shoulders. "Well then...I dub thee Chels, my loyal partner in this quest to manifest this stallion-themed cake."

Before Elli knew it Hiro was directly by her side. He took on of her hands—his hands were soft—and he urged her to stand. When he spoke she listened intently to his voice. When he was finished she nodded and did as she was told. As she left the table she could hear the waiter uttering another apology. 

Once inside the bathroom Elli turned the faucet on cool water, putting her hand and forearm in the flow. It had been a long time since Elli was burned. Sure, she worked with ovens and cooking utensils all the time, but it was a long time since she was careless enough to get burned. She forgot how much it hurt. Elli tried to sniff back a couple tears. She knew it was useless to cry. It certainly wasn’t going to change anything. Still, a couple tears fell over her cheeks which her free hand was quick to wipe away. 

After an amount of time she thought was ten minutes—at least until her arm felt a little better—Elli finally left the bathroom. She walked back over to the table where Hiro would be. She hoped she didn’t take too long in the bathroom and make him worry. 

"Sorry if I took so long," Elli said, still holding her hand over the burn. The pressure made it feel better. "So much for getting studying done," she half-joked with a hollow laugh, which then made her realize her homework.  Quickly glancing over to her notebook she noticed a good portion was wet and half dried coffee stains. All she could utter were the words, “Oh, no…”

As Hiro watched Elli run off into the bathroom, the hand which held hers rubbed its thumb against the side of its index finger. He took a deep breath. He was dreadfully worried about her. Yes, it was only a minor burn, but the pain would still be inevitable. 

He could not bear to simply sit around and do nothing. So, instead, he stood and did nothing...Nothing but think and fret. He was so busy worrying that he barely caught the fact that the waiter had told him that they would not have to pay for the coffee, and that they would provide them with a free slice of pie or cake and such. 

Once Hiro was alone, he felt like the minutes were like hours. It was only a matter of time when Elli came back. The first thing he did was run up by her side once more, a small smile along with that ever-earnest countenance on his face. When she looked at the table, however, he saw the damage that had been done to her notebook. He made no sound, but his smile did disappear. He wanted to make her feel better...

"...It's alright, Elli, Let's gather our things for now. Allow us to go somewhere. I'd like to, ah...take you somewhere, to, perhaps, lift the mood." He blushed slightly, but attempted to cover it up by putting his supplies and all of his thinner textbooks into his school bag. He carried his two bigger ones by hand.

"Yeah! It would be pretty cool, don’t you think? And you could do a bunch of cool designs on the cake. I’d like a horse cake. Like, it’s legit shaped like a horse." Her hands moved around to indicated the space in front of her, trying to make some sort of horse shape in it. It probably didn’t come off well. "Wouldn’t that be cool!? Can you do something like that?" She turned to him with a curious look.

"A horse...That would be very impressive." At Chelsea's gestures, he couldn't help but release a light laugh. He looked much more calm and, well, happier. "I suppose, that, if I put my mind to it and have a little bit of studying as well as practice..."

He tapped his chin. "Perhaps I could try, yes. If...I had someone to help me with the task."

"Oh I totally get that. Well, not that I hate tomatoes, but I haatee grapefruit. That stuff is nasty. Taste, texture, smell, just… just.. anything about it." She shivered "Not even an egg could salvage that travesty."

"But your own candy, that sounds awesome. Like hard candies? And do you do the like… the cake decorations and stuff? You know, with the icing?" She mimicked squirting icing onto a cake.

Grapefruit, hm? Well, he was quite neutral about grapefruits. Though he knew that their taste wasn't the most desirable, Hiro knew of its benefits to health. He would not argue, however, as his own issue with tomatoes would be quite the conflict. Anyhow, he made sure to take note to not give Chelsea any grapefruit-related items.

"Yes," he began. "Just like hard candies. I do like chewy candies as well, however...Anything that categorizes as candy is quite appealing to my eyes, haha." Hiro looked to have relaxed somewhat by now, a smile gradually forming on his face once he watched her gesture. "I'm no professional, but I like to try. I haven't made my own frosting before, actually. I only make the bread of the cake. Other things, I must purchase...Perhaps I should try one day."

Chelsea stared at him, clearly unimpressed. She had asked what he did for fun, not his list of chores.

"Well, cooking is fun, right?" She found it fun anyway. "I love cooking with eggs. What about you?"

"Ah, I..." Hiro stopped to think again. What did he enjoy working with? "I suppose I enjoy making sweets. Cakes, cupcakes, things of the like. If I could, then...I would make my own candy, haha."

His thumbs rubbed against the sides of his index fingers. "Though, I do not like tomatoes, unless they are in gratin. I simply cannot handle their texture, nor their taste."

Why was he thanking her? And saying sorry? 

"You’re not… you don’t need to…" she couldn’t find the words. "Ahhh," she ran her hand over her head, pulling her bandana loose. "I mean, okay, it’s weird that you freak about standing ankle-deep in water, not gonna lie, but you don’t need to apologize for that." 

In truth, she felt bad for making him freak out so badly. “What do… what do you usually do for fun?” This was her way of trying to make amends for forcing him into the water.

He was careful about answering her question this time. What if they didn't have the same ideas of fun? Would she simply leave him, avoid him at all costs, and pretend to not even know him if she found him even more boring? Hiro didn't want that to happen...

"I..." he started, staring at the ground. There wasn't much time for 'fun', now that he thought about it. "I read, assist in the nurse's office, write to my mother and father, cook, if I am able...I'm afraid I barely have time for fun itself and its entirety."

All of the things that he had listed were mandatory, anyhow.

Oh Goddess almighty. The boy looked like he was going to faint.

She sighed and led him back to dry land, letting him sit in the grass. Could he handle that? He was out of the water now at least. With a sigh of resignation, she sat down next to him and waited for him to calm down.

After a moment, she spoke up. “Feeling better?”

Hiro practically fell back onto the ground, hands clutching at the grass below him. He nodded downwards slowly, but his head snapped upwards afterwards. 

Before he spoke, Hiro fumbled around for his inhaler. Once he used it, he put it away again. "...Y-yes, thank you for asking," he breathed out, a hand on his chest. Silence came afterwards once again.

"I'm...sorry," he said eventually, sounding ashamed. He brought his knees up to his chest and crossed his arms over them. "I know that you were attempting to help me...I'm too much of a handful. A...'clean-freak', too fussy about all of that...A 'nerd' like me isn't used to having fun like normal people do."

She was not going to believe that for a second. He definitely looked like he was ready to run. “C’mon, Hiro! What’s the problem?” The water barely came up to their ankles, surely that wasn’t the issue. So it had be something else, right? But Chelsea couldn’t think of a thing it might be.

For some reason, every time Chelsea spoke and asked him a question, Hiro felt more and more skittish. He made a small, high-pitched whining sound as he kept his lips tightly sealed. He wanted to respond properly, but nothing came out of his mouth for a long while. S-surely, there was nothing wrong with the water at all! Unless, of course, there was a chemical in it that slowly ate away at the skin and—

The world started to spin. "I-I...I think I need to...Lie down..."

Chelsea kept her hands firmly around his so he wouldn’t bolt out of the water. 

"Come on now, it’s just a bit of water. What’s so bad about that??" She honestly didn’t understand his panic. Chelsea had practically grown up in the wild, though, so it was hard for her to feel afraid of just about anything.

"W-well, the water c-c-c-could be—" Although he had several ideas and comments as to how the water would be 'bad', he didn't look to be able to be able to say them. 

All attempts to run away were futile, as Chelsea had kept a particularly strong hold on him, even as he started to shake slightly. "Ahaha, ha, um, ha, I-I'm alright!" He blurted out very edgily. "Y-you can, um, l-let go now, aha, I um, I assure you!"

"What kind of club president would I be if I didn’t listen to suggestions? Besides, I’ve been having a hard time trying to figure out what to do for my first cooking club. You’ve been a great help," Elli reassured Hiro with a smile. She really was grateful for him bringing up the idea, albeit in a roundabout way. All week she’d been trying to find the perfect recipe, something to really kick off being the president. Now she finally had something. 

"Honestly, you’re not pickier than any other person. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. I don’t like mushrooms for example," she admitted. Which always seemed like a shame since there were so many recipes that involved them. 

As Hiro said he was glad to be with her, Elli’s cheeks flushed slightly, “Same here. I’m glad I got to meet you.” She had to stop herself right there in fear of getting to sappy on him. He seemed like a really nice guy, she didn’t want to scare him off or anything. To fill her awkward silence she took another small bit of cake and finished off her coffee. 

A waiter came around to their table, but Elli didn’t see him. He stood to the side of her and asked, “May I refill your coffee?” The sound made Elli jump. She wasn’t expecting it and her hand flailed out, knocked the pot of coffee which then poured onto her arm. 

"Ow!" Elli hissed, retreating her arm and clutching it. 

The waiter, absolutely mortified, said, “Oh, I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!”

"I-it’s fine…" Elli replied, trying to sound sincere through gritted teeth. She didn’t blame the waiter, but it still hurt.

Well, then, if that was the case, then Hiro was glad to have been able to help. After all, assisting people was one of the things that he liked, and one of the things that he was the best at doing. He couldn't help but feel a little bit of pride—just a little bit, though, of course.

Mushrooms, hm? Hiro felt neutral about them, as he would always eat them passively. He was, however, interested in how the fungi could work as both food and poison, and how that worked overall. Anyhow, he made a mental note in his head to not offer Elli anything that had to do with mushrooms.

When she had noted that she was glad to meet him, he had been drinking his tea. A slightly widened smile had sneaked its way onto his face, curving along with the line of the cup. He set it down gently soon afterwards, cheeks a light shade of pink. He had kept to himself mostly after her comment, pleased to know that he wasn't being a bother and that the feeling was mutual. So, with that, he started to study.

He stopped suddenly, however. A question, a bang on the table, a shattering sound, a shout of pain, apologies...His head snapped upwards, eyes widening at the sight before him. Hiro's irises shifted to observe the event as quickly as he could. It didn't take long for him to assess what had happened. 

Almost too suddenly to believe, Hiro stood up from his seat and immediately went over to Elli's side. Coffee was always burning hot...A minor burn, this would be. Thermal, first degree. He gently took one of her hands, gesturing for her to get up.

"Elli," he said calmly, tone serious as much as it was concerned. "You must quickly find your way to the bathroom. Go to the sink and run water down your arm itself for...ten minutes. The water must be cool—not freezing cold, alright? Hurry, you must go."

On a normal day Vaughn would have chosen to actually eat lunch and de-stress from all the work that he had been doing these past few days, but seeing as his teacher told him that he had a test in Japanese coming up around the same time as a few of his other classes, well let’s just say lunch could wait. Grabbing two sodas from the vending machine, he looked around the lunch area till he spotted a familiar face that happens to be buried by a stack of books. Shaking his head he made his way towards the person and took a seat.

“Sorry for being a little late, brought you a soda” he said as he placed a soda in front of the male and then took a seat next to him. “Thanks again for helping me study for my Japanese test” he said softly as he reached inside of his bag and pulled out his textbook and his notebooks that held all of his notes.

Hiro was very concentrated on his calculus—that is, until a soda had been placed in front of him, its buyer having been sat down as well. The brunet looked up to see who it was, though he could already recognize him by his voice. 

"Ah, do not worry, Vaughn. You weren't too late at all, and it is an honor to assist anyone with their academics," Hiro said in his usual formal tone, closing his calculus textbook and placing his calculator on it. "Oh, and I must thank you for the soda. You truly didn't have to, haha." 

He took his can and opened it, flipping to a new page in his notebook after doing so. Once he was done with that, Hiro opened his Japanese workbook and textbook. "Alright...Now, what is the exam going to focus on? Is it, perhaps a unit test or something of the like?"

"It’s water! What could be safer than water?" And it was even shallow. He needed to lighten up. She tugged him the rest of the way in, the water coming up around their ankles. 

"See? Nothing bad."

Well, there were actually quite a few things that were safer than water, but it all depended on the data of the water, such as its condition, its environment, its—

Oh dear Goddess. 

In his thoughts, he had forgotten that he was being dragged by Chelsea. Much to his (late) alarm, he had found that he was already standing in the cool, gently flowing water. He took a sharp breath. "...Eep."

She opened her eyes now. “It’s because you’re not the must fun person that we’re doing this! You need to relax, take a deep breath, and realize your worries are nothing. C’mon,” she took his hand again and backed up into the shallow water, dragging him towards it as well. “Stand in the water too! It’s great!”

But his worries were his grades. Granted, they were actually quite secure. So secure to the point where, if he had a very, very, very off day and received an F on a test, he would still be able to maintain an A in the class. 

"I, um," Hiro choked out when Chelsea had started to bring him towards the water. "Are you, um, i-is that, er, s-safe?"

Well, they were getting somewhere at least.

"Less pressure, right. Like you could just relax and float away on the breeze, right? Like all your worries just kind of.. disappear?"

Disappear? All of his worries? Well...That was very, very difficult, and probably was another story in all. However, he did feel quite relaxed, much to his pleasure and amusement. 

"Hm...There may be a few left over, haha," he said somewhat-lightheartedly. "I must ask, however, if you may allow me to...Why are you going through all of this trouble? Surely, this is all quite strenuous, since I am not the most...fun person to be around."

Isolated Studiers || Vaughn and Hiro

A certain Japanese student had been sitting down in a particularly quiet, almost isolated lunch table, a stack of textbooks (and a workbook) set nearby him. They were in order from the biggest to the smallest, length-wise: poetry, Japanese 2, governmental studies, and psychology. Directly open and in front of him was his calculus textbook, where he had taken, written, and solved problems from. A particularly expensive-looking, high-tech calculator and a notebook were also in front of him. 

Hiro had chosen this particular area due to the fact that it was...well, quiet and isolated. Especially during this time, lunch hour, it was difficult to find a place to concentrate besides the library. He couldn't go there—much too packed at this hour. He sure wasn't going to go into his dorm, since it would be too far away from his classes. So, for now, he would be satisfied with this lunch table, far away from people and far away from noise.
