ok I read some of the kh3 controversies and here are my thoughts as someone who played through kh1, CoM, BBS, kh2, ddd and kh3 in the past three or so months for the first time thus carries no nostalgia for them and loves getting emotionally invested in bad media:

the writing for kh3 admittedly was not very good but, also, it’s not very good in all of the games. a lot of it was cheesy and childish and cutesy and very ‘power of friendship’ -esque which you have to suspend some of your annoyance with since it is a children’s game. I didn’t expect it to wrap up all the plotlines in a genius way because I came in fully knowing that most of this was not planned in advance and the more convoluted you got with each game the more difficult it was up wrap up in a neat bow. That’s just part of having a franchise spanning 20+ years. a franchise they want to keep beating to death until it stops spitting out money by the way.

yeah it was sexist the female characters got nerfed there was forced romance and ‘reveals’ that feel stupid as hell and cutesy mascots that exist only to sell toys and alternate identities and time travel and hand-waving around plot that could have been done better but like. What did you expect. Water is wet. 🤷‍♀️

also I didn’t think the frozen world was that bad lmao

#it’s a unique world and an ambitious project #I don’t envy the creator in having to weave 11 different games over 25 years together lmao #there were definite weak parts but I had a blast #besides nothing spurs my creativity more than something that could have been amazing but wasn’t lmao #for record I adore kh well worth playing in my opinion

Cuteeee I’m really glad we get to play as Kairi and she actually gets to fight AND she gets a combo move with Sora like without this DLC she really was irrelevant to the plot but this is awesome

#also loveeee the last few fights. it was a slog to repeat the same fucking fights I just did in that maze again #but the connecting hearts and playing as the different characters felt really nice. full circle #yeah the game doesn’t feel complete without this dlc I think i agree now that I’m playing it

I finished main game kh3 and heres my criticism

Why did they make Riku’s eyes green. They’re more like this aquamarine color in every other game. how am I supposed to describe them in the fic I’m definitely not working on

#🤔#much to think about.#now Im playing the dlc #but for real ill be honest I loved kh3 I thought it was a really really fun game #the worlds are fun the combat is the best it’s been in the series #lackluster ending without the main villain actually getting ‘punished?’#its a kingdom hearts game. I don’t know what to tell you #I think people expected the franchise to grow up with them and then got upset when it didn’t #the big difference is probably that I played all the games in order over the past few months #when many were waiting like 10+ years between kh2 and kh3 so people expected a perfect sequel #if kh4 is really slated to come out in 2027 that’s 8 years between games so it’s honestly not too bad #I actually do have some opinions but will wait until finishing the dlc

Actually no I’m not done. The little keychains at the end prior to the fusion are both little hearts with dark/light wing motifs but on fusion the keychain is the poupou fruit? The soulmate always be together fruit?! And there’s the crown motif in the center of their fused keyblade????? There’s no fucking way. This had to have been initially designed as Kairi’s fusion/awakening. this isn’t just love interest coded this is love interest blatency. Like they could have just made a cool bro keyblade they could have gone with the royal theme they could have done ANYTHING but they went with the blade itself becoming a complete heart and THE soulmate fruit exclusive to the island they both grew up in as the chain??? Their hearts coming together becomes this??? #okay?!?

#it objectively would have made more narrative sense for Kairi to have the light keyblade since she’s one of the seven lights #Riku as the dark keyblade #even better if it came together from all 3 with Sora being the thing that joins them connects them #and all three of them being together #maintaining the romance subplot AND actually incorporating them as all friends and equals #in summary this was a deliberate choice #in kh1-CoM-kh2 Riku was convinced he was being sidelined and removed himself from the equation #and since the end of kh2 Sora has been like: no. I chose you. you will never doubt how important you are to me again #effectively sidelining Kairi.#Riku was never Sora’s love rival. he was kairis. in this essay I will -
