LIGHTS OUT ft. open
the lab was supposed to be empty at this hourโjust taeyang, his half-finished potion, and the quiet hum of his own off-key singing as he stirred the mixture for what felt like the hundredth time. the recipe should have worked. heโd double-checked the ingredients, adjusted the ratios, even hummed a steady tuning note to stabilize the emotional resonance. but the liquid in the vial remained stubbornly dull, refusing to shimmer the way it was supposed to. he exhaled through his nose, rubbing at his tired eyes with the back of his wrist, smudging ink across his cheek. โcome on,โ he muttered, tapping the rim of the vial with his finger, โjustโjust work already.โ he was so close. he could feel it. if he justโ
the lights cut out.
the soft tinkling of her wind chime drifted through the air, light and almost soothing but that wasnโt what drew the attention of passersby. sitting cross-legged right in the middle of the pavement, anqi faced a patch of overgrown grass, completely unbothered. in one hand, she held a cheeseburger and in the other, she dangled a small piece of meat, gently wiggling it like bait. to anyone else, it looked absurd, as if the stress of school had finally gotten to her. there was nothing there but a bush.
but anqi knew better.
โhey, sweetieโฆ itโs okay. you donโt have to be scared,โ her voice was soft and patient. โyou must be hungry, huh? look, i brought you something.โ just as she inched the food closer, a loud crash echoed somewhere in the distance. the lights flickered once then everything went dark. the sudden noise sent the hidden spirit into a panic. a faint blur shot out from the bush before darting up the stairs. โwait!โ anqi scrambled to her feet, grabbing her bag as she hurried after it.
darkness swallowed the stairwell, the only light coming from the faint glow of the moon filtering through the windows. if anything, the dark felt familiar, almost comforting. rounding the corner, she caught sight of a fleeting shadow slipping into one of the classrooms. โgotchaโฆโ she whispered, a small smile tugging at her lips. as she stepped inside, the room was pitch black, the moonlight barely reaching past the doorway. her hand found the switch out of habit. click. nothing. she frowned and tried again. still nothing. โโฆpower outage, huh.โ
with a quiet sigh, she reached into her bag, fingers brushing against the small matchbox she kept until she heard a nervous voice. โโฆoh.โ she blinked before grabbed a nearby lamp, striking a match and lighting the candle inside. a soft glow bloomed, pushing back the darkness just enough. โiโm anqi,โ she said, lifting the lamp slightly, squinting as she tried to make out the other personโs face. โwho are you?โ
the flickering candlelight reveals a face smudged with ink and what might be potion residue, taeyang blinking owlishly at the sudden illumination like a startled owl. โoh! uhโhi!โ his voice is bright, almost too loud in the quiet dark, and he immediately winces at the volume before offering a sheepish grin. โsorry! i didnโt mean toโuh, crash? or scare you? or whatever just happened?โ he gestures vaguely at the shattered vial on the floor, then at the candle in her hand, his fingers twitching like he wants to help but isnโt sure where to start. โiโm taeyang! han taeyang. music witch. and, uh, professional glass-breaker, apparently.โ his laughter is nervous but warm, the kind that makes you want to laugh with him even if nothingโs funny.
he crouches down to start picking up the larger shards, his movements clumsy but careful. โthe power outage got me good,โ he admits, shaking his head. โi was working on this potionโwell, trying toโand then bam, darkness. and then you! which, uh, is nice! not the darkness part. the you part.โ he glances up at her, offering a lopsided smile.
taeyang straightens up, brushing his hands off on his pants before realizing heโs probably just smeared more ink on them. โoh no.โ he looks down at the new stains, then back at her, grinning again. โiโm really bad at first impressions, huh?โ his eyes flick to the candle, then to the shadows beyond. โbut, uh, if you wanna stick around, i could play something? to, yโknow, make the dark less dark? or we could justโsit. or talk. or not talk! whatever youโre comfortable with.โ
FOLLOWING THE PAPER TRAIL.
โธโธ โ๏น 0/1 ๏นopen starter.
the first tell that something had gone awry came not from commotion but from the lack of it.
yura had grown used to the clutter of her companions: the soft shuffle of paper feet, the gentle thud of books falling off its pile, the flutter of folded wings by her head. they rarely strayed far. if anything, they tended to orbit her, like little planets towards their sun.
so when the corridor behind her fell silent, she paused mid-step. she turned, expecting to find them simply lagging behind. perhaps one of them had dropped a book on one of their companions, or tripped on a wrinkle on the carpet.
instead, she caught only the tail end of movement. one of the foxes darted around the corner, followed by three toy soldiers. a flying squirrel trailed right behind them.
taeyang blinks down at the sudden congregation of tiny creatures swarming around his feet, his fingers stilling mid-air as he holds a half-written sheet of music. the fox circles his boots, the toy soldiers snap to attention like theyโre guarding a treasure, and the flying squirrelโoh, thatโs newโperches on his head with the confidence of a king claiming his throne. โuh. oh!โ he fumbles the sheet, nearly dropping it before catching it against his chest, his other hand instinctively reaching up to cradle the squirrel like itโs a particularly bold hat. โiโi didnโt do anything! i swear!โ his voice pitches higher than he means it to, laughter bubbling up despite the confusion. โi was justโuh, humming? maybe? sometimes my magic does weird things when i hum too loud?โ he shifts his weight, toes curling in his shoes as the fox sniffs his laces. โbut i donโt think i did anything on purpose!โ
the warmth in the professorโs voice eases some of the tension in his shoulders, though his fingers still twitch around the squirrelโs tiny paws. โtheyโre really cute, though,โ he admits, grinning as one of the toy soldiers wobbles slightly, its sword tilting precariously. โi mean, not that iโm complaining! i justโwasnโt expecting a parade.โ he glances around the hallway, as if checking for hidden cameras or some kind of prank banner. โdid i accidentally sing a summoning spell? iโve been working on this new melody, but itโs not supposed to do this!โ his laughter is bright, a little breathless, like heโs already decided this is the best thing thatโs happened all week. โshould iโฆ play something? to make them go back? orโโ the squirrel chitters, and he jumps slightly, hand flying to his hair. โoh! sorry, little guy. you can stay. if you want.โ
taeyangโs cheeks flush as he realizes heโs rambling, but the professorโs amused expression keeps him from clamming up entirely. โiโm taeyang, by the way!โ he blurts, offering a quick, awkward bow that nearly dislodges his new squirrel friend. โhan taeyang. itโs my second year. um. music witch? i donโt think iโve had your class yet, but iโve heard about yourโuh, your creations!โ he gestures vaguely at the assembled group, his grin turning sheepish. โtheyโre amazing. really. i just didnโt think theyโd like me this much.โ

the lights cut out.
hey, hey! itโs bright again (crowd boos) i present to you all my silly lil muse, a very huge contrast from nero. his nameโs taeyang and heโs a witch that has an ability to control music and influence people with it. iโve written a tldr of his background, personality, and abilities. you can view them under the cut. as always, if you want to plot. feel free to contact me (or leave a โค๏ธ on this post)
THE MELODY OF ABSENCE: A CHILDHOOD IN TWO KEYS.
taeyang was born into a house split between light and darkโhis father, a witch who drew magic from nature, filled their home with sunlight, laughter, and the hum of harmonies. his mother, a practitioner of dark magic, was a ghost in their lives, disappearing for months at a time, leaving behind only the faintest traces of her presence: the scent of burnt herbs, the echo of whispered incantations, the cold emptiness of her absence.
taeyangโs father tried to fill the void with music, teaching him to find magic in the rhythm of the world, to heal with a hum, to listen to the stories the wind carried. but no matter how bright his fatherโs magic burned, it couldnโt outshine the shadow his mother left behind. then, one day, his mother didnโt come back.
taeyang was sixteen when his father fell illโa slow, creeping sickness that natural magic couldnโt cure and dark magic couldnโt touch. he spent the last months of his fatherโs life singing to him, weaving his magic into lullabies to ease the pain, to chase away the fear. when his father finally closed his eyes for the last time, taeyang was left alone in a house that felt too big, too quiet, too empty. his mother was still gone, vanished without a word, without a trace. and so, with nothing left to anchor him, he began to wander.
for years, taeyang drifted from town to town, a stray witch with no home and no purpose. he played his music for coins, for smiles, for the fleeting sense of connection it brought him. he slept in hostels, in alleyways, in the homes of kind strangers who took pity on his tired eyes and his too-trusting smile. he searched for his mother in every face, in every shadow, in every whisper of dark magic he encountered. but she was never there.
now, he stays at the boarding school for magical beings, not because he believes heโll find answers, but because he has nowhere else to go. he tells himself itโs temporary, that heโll leave once heโs strong enough, once heโs ready. but the truth is, he doesnโt know what heโs waiting for. maybe a sign. maybe his familiar. maybe just the courage to stop searching and start living.
THE SYMPHONY OF SOUND: A WITCHโS GIFT AND CURSE.
magic source: soundwaves and emotional resonance. his magic thrives on connection and emotion, drawing power from the energy of the world around him.
abilities and applications:
emotional amplification: can amplify or dampen emotions through music, making existing feelings more intense.
soundwave manipulation: shapes sound into physical force, creating shockwaves, barriers, or subtle illusions.
memory echoes: evokes memories or sensations tied to specific sounds, helping others recall or relive past experiences.
harmonic healing: eases minor pain and accelerates natural healing through rhythmic vibrations.
limitations:
emotionally dependent: his magic weakens if heโs numb or detached.
physically taxing: prolonged use leaves him exhausted or unstable.
sound sensitivity: loud or sudden noises disrupt his focus and magic.
vulnerable to dark magic: his natural affinity makes him susceptible to corruption if he dabbles in darker powers.
THE DISSONANCE WITHIN: A STUDY IN LIGHT AND SHADOW.
strengths:
empathetic to a fault: taeyang feels everythingโjoy, sorrow, angerโas if itโs his own. itโs what makes his magic so powerful, but itโs also what makes him so vulnerable.
a natural peacemaker: he has a way of easing tensions, of making people feel heard, of turning conflict into harmony. his presence is soothing, his voice a balm.
unshakably kind: no matter how many times the world has let him down, taeyang still believes in goodness. he still trusts. he still hopes.
adaptable: heโs used to change, to uncertainty, to making a home wherever he lands. he doesnโt need muchโjust a place to rest and someone to sing to.
weaknesses:
gullible: taeyang trusts too easily, believes too quickly, and often ends up hurt because of it. he wants to see the best in people, even when they donโt deserve it.
self-critical: heโs his own harshest critic, always convinced heโs not enoughโnot strong enough, not smart enough, not magic enough.
prone to burnout: his empathy is a double-edged sword. he gives and gives until he has nothing left, and then he collapses under the weight of it all.
avoidant: heโd rather run than face his pain. heโd rather sing than speak. heโd rather help than be helped.
THE UNWRITTEN DUET: CONNECTIONS WAITING TO BE SUNG.
tba. still on the process of writing them. iโll probably have a separate post for both nero and taeyang, please be on a lookout!
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on you again for taking advantage of my compassionate and forgiving nature! How dare you!
